I helped my fiend with his xs400 special II, with spring maintenance. last fall he parked his bike after it wouldn't start in later october. We speculated that is was the carbs, I took them off and soaked the in carb cleaner, cleaned out the jets, installed new needle's and gaskets. Proceeded to adjust the valves as per the manual, exhaust .018 and intake .010, changed the oil and filter, prefilled the filter before installation and new plugs. After we got everthing installed and torqued, fill the gas tank with fresh fuel. We noticed the battey is dead as a doornail. So instead of waiting for the battery t charge I decide to start kicking it over, after about 10 kicks…

Hey Everyone I'm a Yam man Had a Thundercat and now have a 2008 R6, as much as I love it there is something missing... Have just got hold of an SR125 that was stood for 5 years and have got it back on the road, not a resto but enough that I stripped most of the bike off to sort bits and bobs. This is for the o/h so she didnt want anything special doing. It was really nice to be riding along taking in the view and not screaming around lying on top of it But now I've got the bug Thinking of trying to find something complete but need stripping down and then powder coating etc Have seen an XV750 on ebay that I really like and a xs250, doesn't ha…

Bike: 77 xs400 Just got the carb rebuild kits in the mail so I put everything back together, threw the tank on and she started up first kick. sounded good, even firing. was running high though, about 4500 rpm. I figured it was just blowing through some extra fuel and getting warmed up and would tame down once warm. no such luck. not sure what that means or what I could do to fix that. any opinions? also, upon reassembly of the carbs, the choke rod no longer holds in the out position. it used to have two positions, in and out. now if I pull it out and let go, it just springs back in. maybe I missed something when reassembling the carbs?

The bike hasn't been running to my knowledge for 4-5 months. Prior to my purchase the previous owner, a friend, said he cleaned the carbs. Basically, she'll start up fine and idle around 1500-2000 rpm (full choke) but upon going to 1/2 choke or giving her any throttle, she dies. I assume it's due for a carb adjustment of some sort, but I need a point in the right direction. Thanks!

Just piked up at 78 XS 400 on the cheap. Running pretty well after cleaning the carbs. One of the carbs has a needle that's broken off and I assume that's why one cylinder backfires a bit while at idle. Ordered a carb kit from fleabay which should hopefully take care of that. Now the for question The kickstart lever when all the way down hits the rear brake pedal arm. Sometimes to the point they will bind up on each other. I've rotated the rear brake down slightly so they wont hit but it puts the pedal below the footpeg which renders it useless. I'm wondering if I have an incorrect kickstart lever or wrong/bent brake pedal. Even the ones I see on fleabay se…

In the manual I read: Headlight "sealed beam" 50W/35W. With mine there is a plane reflector and it is not worn, with a complcated lense. The H4 bulb in place looked worn and gave no good light. So I replaced with OSRAM Bilux H4 NIGHTBRAKER 60W/55W. ("90% more light" ??) The low beam shines OK, but the high beam goes everywhere except where I expect it. What might be the right bulb???

When driving fast (well... not very, but...) the clutch slips when change gears with much throttle. If then give less throttle the clutch picks up. First thought it was because the cable had much resistance from dirt. But with new smooth sliding cable still the same. So last week took off the left crankcase cover. In the manual there are 6 friction plates and 5 not burned clutch plates. I just have 5 and 4, but the thickness all together comes to the same. The clutch plates have friction. Five dry clutch plates can not be turned among each other when pressed between hands. The springs are of the right length (34.5 mm). Did not find a shop yet to check the spring…

Hey their guys. I am new to motorcyles, In fact I dont even have a bike license yet, and I am looking for an old xs 400 or xs 650 for a starter bike. Anyways I went to go look at a nice 81 xs 400 special today, and the bike was in pretty decent condition for its age. However the owner said that he rode it all last season and it ran fine, but after he took it out of winter storage it starting fine but was running really rough. He said it has a serious lack of power compared to last year and now it keeps stalling. Anyways I started it up and it sounded like it was idling fine, when I reved the motor it sounded strong, but then when I put my hand on the exhuast pipes, yo…

on my 1974 dt175a. recently i started blowing headlights at higher revs. i checked my charging circut output and its about 4v at idle. 20v at high rev (6000 rpm) unless i hook up the batery, then i maxes out at 8v i checked the headlight circut the same way and now im getting no output thru the low beam. and less than 1 volt at 6000 rpm on the high beam. I cannot keep driving it without some help because i might cook my battery. what part do i need? i assume its some sort of voltage regulator. but, there isnt one that i can find. I have traced all the wires from where they exit the flywheel to the headlight switch and battery. there is no regulator. no box, no nothi…

Hey everybody! I'm convinced I'm going to have my XS500 up and running this summer. I've enlisted the help of a BMW fanatic/engineer to come help me set the points tomorrow. The only problem is that the only documentation I have is a supplimentary service manual I downloaded via Bittorrent. Does anyone know of any documentation online that would help us tomorrow? Are there any other Yamaha bikes that have similar settings that I can use the manual for? THANK YOU!

Hi all, I recently purchased an 81 xs400 special, runs pretty good, but I wanna see what I can do to it. I've been looking around but there isn't very many resource websites for the xs400. Does anyone know of any good websites for parts, original or aftermarket? Also any websites that have a lot of pictures which can help me decide how I want my bike to look? Im new to the forum and I'm glad you guys are here.
