Hello all, Luke here, First off this forum is amazing and it's great to find a place where so many people are enthusiastic about XS400s. Since a lot of you are from England, it might be relevant that me mum is from Liverpool. I inherited an xs400 last year from a friend of a coworker and last summer I had it working and had joined a forum to help and be helped. Here is a link to my introduction: http://www.motorcycleforum.com/showthread.php?t=81240 Most of the useful information is in the following thread: http://www.motorcycleforum.com/showthread.php?t=81312 There are also a listing of all the XS400 owners on the forum: http://www.motorcycleforum.com/…

Hi again everyone. Maybe you guys might have some ideas for me on my latest problem. I rode my new 81 xs 400 for a few hours yesterday and everything seemed good. So today I wanted to take it out again. The battery needs replacing as it does not hold a charge so I have been kickstarting it. So I rolled it out of the garage, pulled the choke to wide open and gave it a kickstart. The bike started right away and after about 30 seconds I turned the choke off. The bike continued to idle nicely. I went over to talk to my kids while the bike warmed up, and after about 3 minutes the bike died. So I went to try and kickstart it again and nothing, it wont start now. I hoo…

Hey guys, I'm Chris from Los Angeles, new to the forum and fairly new to the Yamaha world. I finally decided that I need to get my bike on the road after it has been sitting for years collecting dust, rust and a non-op title. I have a lot of work to do on it. I joined the YOC in hopes of help from all of you experts. Thanks for letting me on. The bike is a 1976 XS500. This past weekend I took out the carbs to give them a good cleaning and discovered that I am missing the springs from the chamber. So, I am hoping one of you guys may be able to guide me in getting them. Should this be on a different post? Should I put up a WTB post? New here so any help would…

Have a 78 xs400. Are there any mods that can be done to make the engine produce more torque/hp? Maybe jet kits? Any links to sites or experiences anybody may have had would be great.

I’m looking for the best way to do something the wrong way. I have an XS400 special that has the threads stripped on the one spark plug. With the weather clearing, and a lack of parts/ time/ funds I want to find a way to ride the bike without pulling the head. Is there a plug with a slightly larger thread that I can run in? Or, is it possible to JB weld or something similar the plug into place for the season? thanks

Has anyone lowered the stock forks on an XS400? I have an 81 and am interested in cutting the springs or inserting a spacer into the tubes. I cannot however figure out 1) how to open the damn things and 2) which method to follow. Any help always appreciated. Thanks

Hi all, On the TZ350 site there is an article on building a TR3 replica that is using the DT2 swingarm as a cheaper alternative to the TZ box-section version when improving the weight distribution on the DS7/R5/RD frame. I have a hunch the swingarm on the later and thus more readily available twin-shock DTs might be the same dimensions. So I would be really greatful if any owners of the subject line bikes would post the width (between frame brackets) and length (pivot to midpoint of chain adjustment) onto the reply. And if someone has a TD3/TR3/TZ-A&B swingarm looking for a new owner at a "low" price then here's a buyer. TIA! And thanks Yamaha for creating th…

I have looked at the baffel and gave it a clean up took the head off and looked at the piston, it really wasnt coked up at all I amnow thinking it maybe a carb issue. Any ideas or advice greatly appreciated. Cheers

Hi everyone I am new to the forum. Looks like a great place to learn. I live in Vancouver BC Canada and I just bought a 1981 XS 400 Special II, this will be my first official motorcycle although I also own a 2003 yamaha BWS (zuma) 49cc scooter. I posted some questions about the motorcycle last week after I went to see it and one of the cylinders was dead. The previous owner took it to a shop where they determined that the spark plug wire was all corroded, so they replaced it and when I went back to see it again it was running nice and smooth with lots of exhuast comming out of the tailpipe. I decided to buy it. The next day I started playing around with the bike and…

I picked up a little 100cc Yam yesterday at a yard sale for the boy. It seemed to be in decent shape but I don't know much about these bikes at all. The guy said that he was having some electrical issues with it and couldn't get it started but when I cranked it over the cylinder sounded dry..... I figured what the heck, it's 50 bux. I got it home and started messing with it a little to see if I could at least figure out some of the problems right away. I have been trying to do some research on the net to see where I can get parts for this bike and what exactly it is. According to the manufacture sticker and engine it is a LT2 that was made sometime in '71. Prob…

I searched the forum and still have a question: So it's time for new tires. I was looking at the Dunlop 404 series. My 77 xs 400 has the cast alloy wheels. By the age of the bike I'd assume they came from the factory tubed but since they are not spoked wheels can I run my tires tubeless? I found the tires I wanted to get but it seems that I'm left more confused. Here are the tires I was looking at: Rear: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/31/...-Rear-Tire.aspx Front: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/31/...Front-Tire.aspx both are bias ply tubeless. Can I run these tires as is or must I run them with tubes?

Hi all, im new to this site. Im thinking about purchasing a 75 rd 250 2moro. The bike is basically in mint shape. it has 9900 miles on it. Is this alot for a 250 2 stroke? also the guy saaid the bike will start and run, but under a load it bogs out and barely runs. he seems to think it is a crank seal. the price is $800. is this too much? also where would i find engine parts? where could i send the engine to be rebuilt? any help is appreciated. thanks

After putting about a 40 mile trip on my 78 XS500 today my clutch cable snapped as I shifted into 5th gear! Luckily I was only about a mile from home and was able to get back without stopping and a couple hard shifts without the clutch. I took off the right side cover to find the end piece of the cable broke away from clutch lever assy to the engine. Once I order a new cable it should be a simple fix. Now my issue is when I tried to start it back up via kickstart it wasn't catching! Could I have ruined the kickstart from the few hard shifts I made without using the clutch? I still had the right side cover off and foot peg while attempting.
