  1. Started by Dirty_Andres,

Hey everyone, I've just recently bought a 91 custom and have taken the entire last week getting it sorted, and I'm now really needing help in getting the bugger to start! My mate came round the other day and got it running(I'd previously taken the carb off for cleaning, so all the jets were and still are nice and clean, and the right type), although it would cut out when idling(he reckoned it was just flooding), so I took the carb off, checked the jets again, adjusted the float (by using an array of different measuring devices, including a tread depth guage) height and put it all back together. I think I should also add that I fully cleaned the air filter be…

Good people, I have discovered a rather disturbing trait being exhibited by my new TDM. If I shut the throttle and leave the bike to coast, it develops a corking front end wobble between 35-40mph. It's not uncontrollable and I only discovered it by accident. I was aware of the front feeling a bit light a while back so, the next time I felt the lightness, I took my hands off the bars and WHOA! Off she went. Hands straight back and the bike settled again. It only happens within this speed window and I've only noticed it when the bike is coasting. When I spoke to a bike shop, the mechanic helpfully suggested, "Don't take your hands off the bars." Whilst I acknowledge t…

My girlfriend's bike has recently started to cut out at high revs on motorway journeys. When this happens it is normally easy to restart the bike again on the side of the road. The problem is very intermittant in nature: for example the bike will be fine for 40 miles and then cut out 4 times in the next 8 miles. The bike is otherwise in good condition, recently serviced and MOTd . Until the problem started it was used for a 24 mile daily commute. I have changed the plugs and drained the fuel tank without any resolution to the problem. I have taken the bike to the repair shop twice and they have been unable to find anything as it behaves itself impeccably when road test…

Hey all, I picked up an old (but fun!) 1980 XT250 from a guy in town a few weeks ago. It's been running so-so: difficulty starting, stalling at lights, high idle. These all sound like carb issues to me, so I took the thing apart last night to clean out my jets. Problem: I unscrewed the pilot jet, but now can't remember how many screws out it was originally. My Clymers manual just states "Pre-set" under the offending column. I have it about two screws out -- but that's from my experience as a Honda CT90 guy. I don't think that there are many of these on the road (and off) these days, but surely some similar Yamaha bikes used this Mikuni carb... Any help would be …

This is my first post. I tried before but it didn't work, so this is just a test. But I am going to make a post about a dread problem regarding my 1974 DT 175. My bird has just forced me to go a long walk, and I need some quick shut-eye.

I finally got my XS400 '80/'81 with electronic ignition started - newly cleaned out carbs - and its running as if its heavily choked and won't pickup. It also spits back through the carbs - what does this indicate?!? too much fuel I suppose. Compression is good. It idles nicely when warm but won't get going. I moved house recently and can't find the manual. Can anyone give me some pointers - eg float height on these carbs - they're plastic floats with a shoulder (see pic). Do you measure to the top of the circular bit or the top of the shoulder. What should the height be? I think the only way to set the timing is with the bike running is this right? any tips to tun…

Just rebuilt a pair of carbs of the BS34III vintage, put them back on the bike, set the petcock to Prime and not long afterwards a lot of fuel came pouring out the right-hand carburetor. I had the air cleaners off and the fuel was coming out the back of carb and would have gone right into the air cleaner so it appears to be an internal leak. Before I pull them back off the bike and start breaking them down again, does anyone know where the leak might be coming from and where I should be looking in order to fix this problem?

I am new to bikes so bare with me while I try to explain what is going wrong. I just bought a 2001 R6 2 weeks ago and the first day i got it home I rode it around for about 3 or 4 hours and it was running fine. I shut it off and let it set for about 15 to 20 minutes and it wouldn't start when I went to leave. After I tried to start it until the battery was dead, I had to push the bike home (luckily I was just 2 blocks over) and I put it on the battery charger and cranked until it started. It took the throttle being wide open to start and then it had a rough, low rpm idle. The bike had been sitting for awhile so the next morning I drained the gas tank, changed the plu…

Hey Guys, I have a 97' yzf 600 with only 3,800 miles on it. Last year I put it away running with no problem. I pulled it out of the garage changed the fuel!! and she still won't start. I sprayed starting fluid in the air intake and she started up, so ignition I'm assuming is out of the question. The fuel filter was clean and the flow is good. I also cleaned the spark plugs. Any other ideas?????? Thanks! John

I just got a 77 xs400, it wont start. I am not much of a mechanic, but i figure i cant screw it up much worse then it already is. I decided to start with the carbs so took them apart, looks like they got sprayed with some kind of sealant to keep them from leaking, oh joy. when i took them apart I stuck my finger in them and raised the round cylinder things in the main tubes, and in 1 of them I could hear a thunk in the top. I got them apart and the diaphram isn't staying in place. When I raise the round thing the rubber at the top goes up too. So I cleaned them out real good, soaking in gas and a toothbrush/air compressor. When I went to put them back together on…
