I have a Yamaha R6 wich dropped a valve. I stripped the head and presumed the cam timing standard. The cams have been degreed. Cam anyone help me with the correct loab centers or the correct degreed specs.

  2. I was doing a search trying to find a post that had great info on engine cleaning tips. Particularly getting between the fins. I recall one guy said he used gun cleaning brushes but that seems a bit harsh! In XS400 forum I found the one with Houghmades bike pic http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4783&highlight=polishing (seen that on YOC as well) and this from Hough: "What didn't I use....Carb cleaner, brake cleaner, Simple Green, Comet, Aluminum Polish. Fish tank brushes helped to get between the fins. The scrubbing cleaned up the jugs to a nice "as cast" look. Lot of wet sanding and then hand polishing for the side covers." I have the valve cover…

Hello yet again, I'm trying to test my alternator output but it seems that during my bike's life sometime someone has replaced some of the wiring. The workshop manual is telling me to test the resistance between specific colours of wires that come out of the alternator, but the colours don't match! The reason I'm trying to check this is that with the engine at around 2k revs it's only outputting 13.4v instead of 14.5, and before I move on to checking the rectifier and regulator the manual suggests testing these to see if the coils are working properly. Suggestions please?

  5. Upon another review of my own video the burning oil from cam seal behind the points doesn't bother me since i kind of expected that, it just looks real bad for now. Although the exhaust looks does look as if it is burning oil. I was thinking a below-freezing garage and rich mixture and/or timing needs to be fine tuned in. Does that not look like i am burning oil? When I rebuilt quite a while back, and didn't know what I was doing, is it possible the brand new valve stem seals are not pushed down all the way? Or might it be what i first thought - coldness / rich mix / timing?

  6. Hi everyone, Last weekend I lost a baffle from the end of my left hand exhaust pipe. The only solution I could find was to buy a new set of 'generic' silencers which arrived this morning. They came with 3 sleeves to suit different diameter exhaust pipes, and each sleeve had a section cut out of it so that it could expand or contract as necessary. I ended up using all three sleeves for each silencer. The problem is that when I did a test ride today, after a little while the engine wanted to stop running, and I was getting gurgling noises and pops from the exhaust. I assume this means that water was getting in there? This evening I re-fitted one of them to take a clos…

It seems riding schools are keen to teach us new guys how to STOP, as the assumption is we will manage OK to get going. I just traded up from a 250 Virago to a new XVS650. I was surprised to find how less effective the rear brake is on the new bike. Is this usual. Is there any thing I can do to improve braking???or any suggestions about my operating? When not an emergency, (say approaching lights), I tend to slow down by using foot brake and changing down. usually only use front brakes when a more urgent situation requiring a strong STOP is necessary. New to this so any suggestions appreciated. Thanks Rossr

Please advise! My 1982 XJ650 have been reassembled, but when I try to start, the starter-motor turns on, but there is a rattling noise coming from inside the engine. The rattling noise continues, but the engine does not start, sound as if the starter motor is running around "free", spinning the chain around, not catching the engine. Out of 20 trials 1 might accidentally start the engine... Friend says that the hy-vo chain that is connected to the starter engine is stretched and need to be replaced... Is that possible? Could it be the starter clutch? What to do? If the chain is faulty, where can I get one (at a reasonable price ofc.)? Thanks!

Hey peeps. I noticed that on tick over you can hear a metal like rattle from the engine. On closer inspection I found that the metal plate at the very back behind the variator (the one that has the teeth on it) - sorry for being so technical! Lol, has slight movement and believe this to be causing the noise. Does anyone have any ideas on what may need replacing? Have added a pic to show the part im on about. I have been advised that it could be the 'Starter Clutch' that has now worn causing movement (Link of new one - http://www.adrenalin-pedstop.co.uk/p/Starter_clutch_for_Minarelli_engines_–_Nitro_Booster_etc-2601.aspx ) Has anyone replaced on…

Hi everyone, i baught a 1981 DT 175 Yamaha that was stripped down of all it's lighting it was used for just dirt racing. My problem is i want to get a headlight working on it so i can see at night if i have to. I tried an after market headlight it was more or less an offroad light for a truck, but it was for a 12 volt system, the bulb in it is a H3 55 watt 12.8 volt light, and they burn out within a minute of me turning on the light. Is there any way that i can reduce the voltage so that it doesn't burn out my bulbs? I'm running off of the yellow wire which i think is my magneto wire but i could be wrong, but i do know that the voltage rises as my RPM increases and i have…

Hi all. I have myself a yamaha xj600 s diversion 1993 model and i decided to change the origanal indicators to led ones ( front and rear) Now i have fitted the led indicators and put a resistor on each of the indicators to make it flash at a normal speed but when i turn my headlight on the led's become bairly visible but when i turn the headlight off the indicators work normally and a bright. I am thinking of going down the line of getting a led flasher relay but not sure what to get. I looked at the origanal one in the bike and it has a clip in 3 prong single connector with 3 wires coming out of it. Would getting a led flasher relay solve the issue with the i…

Anyone got a cheaper parts source for 125 dragstars? I have AJSutton at the moment, but their prices are fucking horrendous.. Simple things are in their hundreds, and bigger things are making their way up to the thousand mark, I couldnt afford that if I was a rock star... wtf do these people think their doin?? Seriously they dont even send the full part half the time... If anyone can name another supplier I'd owe them my life... not ebay, as its not always full of broken draggies. Thanks *Don't quote me on the life thing.... maybe a pint...

I have a new XVS650 Custom. Yamaha recommend engine oil change at 1000k and apparently there is a 'running-in' oil in it for this time. Is this correct? I love fresh clean oil in any engine and I am tempted to change to a API SL 15w50 MOTUL 3100 Gold 'MA' -asap??? I understand re. using MA oils as the wet clutch and gearbox requires the hi pressure additives etc. for that application. But what about 'running-in' a new bike. Like a car engine where the bore will glaze if a hi quality multi grade oil is used in a new engine?? And what about the gearbox and a 'running in' oil?? If that is what is in fact used. I have flushed and changed the oil in the Final Dr…

The starter motor on my dt125x seems to be turning the wrong way, I cant figure out why since I have not touched the electrics in any way, the only thing is when i was rebuilding the engine after blowing the crank I used a caphead allen screw instead of the standard cheesehead and it fouled the starter gearwheel and when I went to start it the starter struggled to turn the engine over and there was a small puff of smoke where the starter motor relay is located. I checked the 2 fuses on the relay and they are both fine, could the relay itself be faulty? I replaced the screw I had used with the origional and tried again, the motor is turning the gearwheel behind the flywhee…
