In a few short weeks, many riders will be putting their bikes away and riding only on those odd days when it doesn't rain and when the roads aren't covered in salt. What a waste! Hereabouts, from September on, the holiday makers and day trippers stop clogging the roads and the cafes. I get to have Wales all for myself until Easter. Question: How do you keep your bike looking showroom while riding through the rain and the salt? This is what I do and it works. Be warned! It takes at least 10 hours to get your bike ready. 1- Clean and polish the bike to perfection. Polish everything: even under the engine and around the rear suspension. Crystal Glo is a great do everyw…

Hi, I'm in the middle of a debate on the TT Forum. When I suggested that Ricky Carmichael, good as he is, just might not be the greatest motocross rider on earth, the reaction was the same as if I had suggested that Bin Laden should get the Nobel Peace Prize. Being the only European taking part in this "discussion" has been interesting. I reckon that the only true test in Motocross, as in any sport is World Championships. What do you all think? Is AMA Motocross better than the World Champs? AMA road racing isn't close, but maybe Motocross is different.

Hello, all. Haven't visited for some time now, but I'm all excited 'cause yesterday I bought a beautful 2002 silver R1. After riding my YZF750 like a loon I hope it's not going to be a rude awakening! I'll have to have some self-discipline for a while! The YZF was a great bike, but now I'm glad to shot of her after 4 1/2 years, I needed a change. Hope your'e all well, I'll drop in again soon. Ian

......well, for us Yanks anyway  The Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP) and Dorna Sports, the Spanish-based company that holds the commercial and TV rights to the FIM MotoGP World Championships, have reached an agreement in principal to bring MotoGP, the pinnacle of international motorcycle racing, to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca beginning in 2005 for a five-year run. Following the initial agreement, Dorna will include the U.S. Grand Prix in the 2005 MotoGP pre-calendar to be presented to the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) for its approval. “The support from fans and sponsors has been of great encouragement in…

After I bought my new boots, I realised what a mish mash of makes I wear. I am a fashion disaster. Boots - Forma (new) or Gaerne (5 years old). Leather Pants (7 years old)summer) - J&S. Cordura Pants (3 years old) winter) - Hunter. Jacket - Shoei (4 years old), Gloves - Akito(6 months old summer) and Spada (2 years old winter). Helmet - (6 months old) Nolan. Kidney Belt - Sinisalo (new). Best piece of kit - Shoei jacket. Worst piece of kit - Leather pants - comfy but falling apart after all these years. What do you all wear? What is good? What isn't good? Motorcycle clothing has improved beyond recognition in the last 30 years, both in quality and function.…

Now that I am venturing off road with a purpose, I have found that my excellent Gaerne road bike boots are simply not up to the job. They are much too fragile and do not offer enough support. I have been on the look out for some dual purpose boots for a few weeks and until today was frustrated. I have looked far and wide. All there was around were either full on MotoX boots or, almost as ridiculous on the road, Enduro Boots. Very heavy and not designed for walking. Also the steel toe caps on all these boots are a bit too Mad Max for me. The Gericke boots that look Adventure Sports were too weedy for serious mud plugging. Today I found the answer: The boots worn by Trial…

Just heard from a fellow XT660 owner that the dodgy machining on the front of the XT engine cases is common to ALL the new XTs. The fault has been conceded by his dealer AND Yamaha (after a recitation from the Sales of Goods Act) and compensation in the form of Free 6000 mile service and freebies from the Yamaha Catalogue have been offered to my friend. All XT owners are free to pursue Yamaha now that the precedent has been established. Imagine Honda, Kawasaki or Suzuki doing the same.

I was in Hereford the other day, and saw some spotty little twat on a little 50cc thing. No....not ScrapedPlastic....it was a different spotty little twat! Anyway...it was a warm sunny day, so this dickhead was riding round with T shirt, shorts, and flip-flops on! But what was so unusual about this particular twat was that in spite of wearing literally nothing, he was still obviously still safety conscious! Because he was also wearing a pair of footballers shinguards on his legs! I kid you not....I was there! 8) Future Power Ranger in the making I would say!

I must be a bad influence or a trend setter. Just had an e-mail: Two of the three people who I toured Scotland with a couple of weeks ago have gone out and got themselves XT660Rs. One has chopped in his CBR600 and the other (I was shocked) his Africa Twin. This speaks volumes for the impression my XT's performance must have left on them. Mark (Africa Twin) hasn't even waited until 54 Reg day - too impatient. Now, I ask myself, why hasn't Steve got rid of his Deauville?

14Aug04 marks 33 years since Jack Findlay made history in the MotoGP World Championship as the first man ever to win a 500cc race on a two-stroke motorcycle. Findlay’s victory at the Ulster GP on the 14th August 1971, riding a Suzuki 500  built by himself and Danielle Fontana, was the first of victory of a 28 year career which saw the Australian race well into his 40s, establishing a reputation as one of the best privateer riders in the history of the sport. Findlay, who had twice captured the unofficial title of best privateer in the 500cc class in 1966 and 1968, was a keen devotee to the Isle of Man - a race he went on to win in 1972, riding a water-cooled…

Hopefully everyone will at some point be lucky enough to buy a brand new bike. Most will at least buy "nearly new". As you will know, nowadays most bikes come with a two Year warranty. What you might not know is this: The Sales Of Goods Act says that goods should work properly for SIX years from the time of purchase. This, your Statutory Rights, are not advertised by any industry. As bikes are gradually becoming more and more poorly put together, it is worth knowing that you can keep your dealer working for years to finish building the bike that you have just bought properly. Yes Pete! Even Suzukis have been known to go wrong  You can download your r…

Proton Team KR have revealed that they will test a MotoGP engine built by Austrian manufacturers KTM in a private test after the Grande Premio Marlboro de Portugal next month. Team Manager Chuck Aksland insisted that no permanent deal has been struck between the team and KTM, but said the partnership was a viable option for the future if results from the test are positive. “We have the chassis almost completed and ready for the test at Estoril,” confirmed Aksland. “The engine has performed well on the dyno but we want to evaluate it in a chassis, which will be interesting from our point of view and for KTM. “We are looking at our options for the future and KTM is on…

My other half went to Snetterton yesterday to help out some friends who where racing an R1. When I went to get my bike out I dicovered that all the important bits (you know the levers, rearsets etc) where missing. I rang to complain( It would have been fine if they asked) as I wanted to go out. He says just take one of the gixers (your totally missing the point there mate) so I gave up and took his 600 (the 1000 is his race bike it only has a daytime mot for emergencies and it was a bit murky yesterday and I thought I may need lights). Anyway I met my mate and of we went in search of a decent breakfast at our fav cafe. Anyway on route through some twist…
