For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by pfcdaz,

hving spent the last couple of weeks trying to get my forks to pieces i thought i would share the final solution with y'all in case anyone else has similar problems. the forks are off a 1984 yb100, and aledgedly seperate easily once you remove the spacer and circlip from above the oild seal, put the bottom end in a vice and give it a few sharp tugs. reality time....after managing to seperate the vice from the bench mounting we ralised we were not on to a winner, so as a last ditch tactic we tried something i had seen on a webste on the net, but not been convinced by. first step, heat the fork stanchion around the seal until the metal on the seal is red hot. we t…

Hello, I'm having problems with my fuel delivery on a '73 TX650. This bike was a former AMA racer and has been rebuilt for the street after its racing days. It has a custom exhaust and tank but is otherwise stock. At about 1/3-1/2 throttle it runs well until violently leaning out (or flooding?), enough to send me forward in the seat an inch or two. I have rebuilt the carbs and changed the jets but not much has changed. I went to a shop and they told me that I was running rich, while a friend of mine says it's running lean. Needless to say, I'm a bit confused. The only thing I can think of is that the problem has to do with the exhaust. It is straight headers …

Does anyone know if the last two digits on the frame number indicate the year of the bike. I just bought an older IT 400 sky blue color bike and would like to find out more about it. Had some old 76 DT and miss them. Found this for cheap price. Any good sites for parts would also be helpful. Thanks..

Hi all.. my first post here.. I picked up an old XS 250 and have made a start at getting it tarted up and roadworthy again.. I'm searched the net and this forum to see if I can work out what year the bike is from the engine or frame numbers.. The frame number is 2U3=011649 and the engine number is 1M0-011649 I have a service manual for it, which confirms that it is an XS 250 engine. If anyone can help i'd really appreciate it.. (as soon as i figure out how to add a picture I'll put a couple on .. cheers,,)

Ok, as a disclaimer, this is my first bike. I'm fairly mechanical and I have a bike person to help me out on this little project. Just picked it up on Sunday and we've cleaned the carbs and lines (a nice 2 inch clog of crud in the fuel line), changed the gas and got it running with the kick start (starter chain won't stay on). However it backfires. Pretty sure it's because of the lack of an exhaust gasket. Is there something I can use as a quick fix to seal that up until I can get the gasket ordered? I really want to get this bike moving better so we can see what else it needs. Is there another reason for the backfiring? Everything else runs smooth and it start…

Greetings all. A few days ago I purchased my very first road bike, the 1982 XJ550. It is a beauty! I am so pleased with my purchase. So far, I have only changed the front tire (it was dry rotted), but I have put easily 200 miles+ on the bike since I have gotten it. My first non-obvious problem now. Last night I tried to start it up, and it just goes "rrrru-rrrru", turning over really slowly. I first suspected the battery as I remember the guy I bought it from telling me that he was charging the battery for me before I left his place. However, changing the battery out did not solve this problem. I have to push start it, popping the clutch to make her go. I susp…

What carbs are everyone running? Stock? Mikuni? Klien? Round slide? Flat? CV? Size?...... I'm asking because I need to get new carbs because my stock ones are unrepairable. I emailed Mike at 650 central and he thought Mikuni VM34's were too big but the bike came With 34mm carbs stock. And I have no idea what all the numbers and letters for jets mean So I have know idea what initial setup to put the carbs when I order them. Any suggestions. Any help. Thanks, Lost

I am hoping someone here can offer some advice. My neighbor just gave me a 1976 Yamaha DT 400 that has been sitting in the back of his house for 10 - 12 years. I checked for a spark and the motorcycle has none. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about finding why there is no spark? The battery is compleley shot. Does the motorcycle need a battery to start? My Honda doesn't? Any help is greatly appreciated. Robert

Ok, jus bought a sweet 88 YB100, electrics aren't great though. Took the battery off yesterday and the indicators still work with no battery, should this happen? also you have to rev it quite substatially to make the indicators work, and they have a very slow flash cycle. any kind of advice would be appreciated.

Hello all, new to the site. Just wondering if any of you nice folks here could help me out. I am building a cafe racer out of a 77 xs400 and wondered if anyone could help me out with wiring it up for kick only application. I have all of the stock components, and the bike runs well using them. Anyone got some diagrams or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Last night money changed hands and I am the owner of a 1967 ish YL1. The bike hasn't been licensed since 1988 and looks pretty complete. Missing side covers but everything else is there. It has compression and I beleive mostly needs cleaning, lots of cleaning in and out. I am lookign for any insight I can get in the steps to bring the old girl back into the world of "motorcycles serving a purpose" I think she will be a good running around KC bike. Please provide guidance Robin in KC

I was pulling the carbs apart for a good cleaning and found who ever had the bike before me tightened the idle mixture screws too tight. The tips twisted off and are stuck in the carbs and they won't just push out, they've been there a while. Is this repairable? If I have to replace them what carb would I use, since the mikuni bs34's arn't made anymore? Thanks S.
