Hello, new to the forum but not new to motorcycles. I currently have a Seca 750 that is running well. I just bought a 1978 xs400E that has been off the road for at least 7 years. I got it started after a quick and dirty carb clean, unstuck the floats and slides. After it was running I noticed the right muffler(as I am sitting on the bike) was much hotter than the left. Bike runs rough but I expected that. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

Having done the valve clearances (and fitted new plugs), I tried to fire it up... Nothing at all, not even trying to fire. Then I noticed that whilst I had the throttle cable off, it had become dislodged at the twistgrip end and the throttle wasn't fully closing. There was a gap of about 1/4" at the idle adjuster screw. Fixed that and it fired, but still only on the left cylinder. Then it died. It would only start with full choke and absolutely no throttle. And only on one cylinder. Trying to open the throttle kills it instantly, and it will just about keep going after about the fourth attempt. Then, slowly, the throttle can be opened and the speed will increase.…

Does anyone know if a buddy seat and/or luggage rack was an available accessory for a '78 DT100? I've seen luggage racks on older DT100's and buddy seats for larger DTs around the same year. Does anybody have a manual that might tell this? Or does anyone have a buddy seat or rack that I could get measurements from to fashion my own? Thanks.

hi all, my first post on here as i have recently bought an old yamaha. ok here's the deal. i have a 1985 yb100 that i have been putting back together, bought off ebay for a pitance. everything is ready for the MOT, the final job was to replace the fork oil seals and put in some freash oil, as i topped up the oil it started leaking from a patch on the surface of the lower right fork leg, a very bad repair job by a previous owner. I am struggling to find a replacement fork, partsearch have not come up trumps yet, but someone suggested that the forks from an rs100 might fit. does anyone know if this is true, or if there are any other forks that would fit. my bike…

I just obtained a 77 xs360 2d but the intake carb holders/boots are cracked and need replacement. I've called around to the usual sources and they are discontinued and unavailable. So does anyone know of other nos sources? or is there a set of boots from another bike that will work? ie the xs400 or worst case has anyone ever repair a cracked set? I'm thinking high temp rtv thanks for the help, Jason

Hey all.. I'm new to the site! Also first Yamaha I've owned. I figured I'd offer my help/advice before asking my question lol.. seems only fair. I bought a 1976 Yamaha DT 400.. she's great! all the signal lights and junk aren't on it anymore, except the headlight, and tack and speedo, and I use it for the bush anyhow. She starts with one kick.. always. It's in really great shape. here's a pic. And here's my question... Can anybody help me find a service or owners manual.. in PDF format or along those lines? I'd really like to tune it up nice.. I'd say the only thing it needs is new reeds.. but it would still be nice to have.. …

recently got a 1981 xs850 from a friend that had a charging problem, problem is he took it alittle farther then i think he should have, disconnected the wiring harness all the way back to the battery after reconnecting all the plugs I seem to have power when i shouldn't, the neutral light stays on weather the key is on or not, and can't get the oil lights to work, tested the bulb and it works. The coils won't fire. I have been chasing the problem for the past few days and it appears to me that it might be the ignition unit, is there anyway to test this?

Hey guys, Im new to this whole thing. A little over a year ago I picked up an older Yamaha 400, believe it's a YZ from what I've seen, though I am unsure of what year it is. To make a long story short I bought it off the guy for cheap, because it had a blown head gasket. I purchased the new head gasket, installed it properly according to a little bit of help I got from a motorcycle mechanic at the shop. I put some new fuel in it mixed with some nice synthetic 2 stroke oil. It took a while, but it ended up starting, very excited the first time I heard it run. However this was short lived, the bike was idling very high, so I adjusted one screw, believe i…

I have a 77 XS400, that has Front & Rear Drum Brakes. I am looking for the size / model of the brake shoe needed. I've looked in repair manuals/owners manual. These do not talk about Front Drum pads, just Front Disc. I have not taken the front end apart yet. This summer I plan to rebuild the front end, just wanted to get all the parts lined up. Thanks..

I recently purchased a '79 SR500 and am looking to put spoke wheels on it. I have been told XS650 fronts and TT/XT rears will bolt right on it. I have rear disc wheels and am assuming I will only be able to find drum rears with spokes. I know I will have to weld on a tab for the anti-rotation bar for the drum. Anyone have any definitive answers on what wheels I should be searching the junkyards/Ebay for? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have not been able to find any absolute info on this. I have access to some minor machining but it's very limited. Thanks again in advance. Bhodi

Last year the bike got dropped it was a soft laydown but it went down. Over the winter i put new valve stem seals in and reseated the whole thing, I honed the cyclinders and put new rings on and finally rebuilt the carbs. This was all done by a shop not me except the rings lol I have new plugs wires oil, oil filter ect. This bike is pretty much rebuilt... I can get fuel in the carbs. I crank it over and it just wont jump it sounds like its about to but doesnt. after several attemps it will backfire on me and thats LOUD, this bike doesnt have points or a condenser in it I took the plugs out and grounded them to the side of the engine to see if they were sparking a…
