For Yamaha Adventure Touring and Dirt Bikes

  1. Started by thumbs,

First the bike runs great with no known problems. I was out in the desert doin some pd hunting. It was about 90* and I was doin a lot of first gear running. Frequent stops to glass the area then more low gear running on prairie trails. I stopped to turn around and the bike shut off. I tried to start her but no luck. Checked to make sure I was getting fuel to the carb. No problem. This bike usually starts on the first kick. Does the xt350 get hot and just shut down?? I waited about 20 minutes and she fired right up and got me home with no problem. Again is it possible she just got hot from the low gear running in the heat with little air over the fins and just shut…

  2. FIrst post here, so my apologizes if i'm posting in the wrong section. Anyways, getting to my point. I purchased a 1978 Yamaha GT80 for a great price, 40$ and the guy is the first owner so I got the ownerships. Bike is in pretty rough shape, but for the price I coudn'lt turn it down. The thing is, their is no spark. First thing I did was check the coil, it was finished so I ordered a new one off of Ebay for 17$, then changed the plug, still no luck. Then I proceeded in cleaning the points, still no go. Finally, I went and took apart the fly wheel, the magnetic plates (?) were quite rusted, so I lightly cleaned them using sand paper (Yes, I know this will create future…

  4. So, i have a problem when starting my bike when engine is cold. Funny thing is, it depends on the weather, when its hot outside i can start it easily, when degrees go down like 10 celsius then its more hard to light it up and it very easily wets the spark plug. I never use choke, because when i have tried it, it never helps anything, and i have a feeling that it will only wet my spark plug more easily. Allways when my engine is hot, there is no problems with starting it up. There is some little other problems too, that i think will have something to do with this too. Sometimes, when i run on idle, my engine goes off without warning. Allso, when i drive, i think when i…

  7. Hello again, Friends! So I posted a while back about my 1975 Yamaha DT400 having trouble kick starting, which was initally resolved for a while. She would putt around like the old dog should and was quite a blast!! But sadly enough she seems to be sick again. On the way home from work recently I was crusing about 5-10 miles down a straight road at 40MPH and when I arrived at a stop light, I noticed she was kinda struggling (cough and sputtering). Gave her a bit of gas and she seemed to release herself from it til I arrived at the gas station, then began to cough and sputter again. Shut her off, tried to kick her over, no dice. I tried resetting her carbureter…

  8. Hi, this is my first post. I need a bit of guidance. I have a 1981 model year Yamaha XT250 dual sport motorcycle. I have it together but theres still work to do. Im having a bit of a time finding some parts too. I changed the rear tire and tube which was a nightmare because the dried out original tire was still on it. It was hard as a rock. I still need to swap the front since it wont hold air. Here is my stupid noob issues. 1. This is only the second bike Ive owned and the second bike Ive put back together. I am not a mechanic. 2. The switch on the petcock snapped when I went to start it last. I DID find a new part @BikeBandit.com 3. The electrical syst…

hello all, i am having trouble getting spark from my 1979 dt125f and after checking the all the wiring (including the coil, the rectifier, the ignition/kill switch, the ground, cleaning the condenser/points aswell as the coils) and when we checked the voltage coming out of the magneto, it only topped out at about 4-6v. and when searching around we found that it is way too low, so we checked the wiring inside the magneto and it all seems good (in terms of resistance and continuity) between the four contact points and the ground. Are we missing anything? Any help will be greatly appretiated Thanks in advance

Hey so I was thinking about changing my levers to ASV or something but most of them specify a bike...is that necessary or do you think most of them will fit the DT anyway ? I was thinking of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CR80-CR85-CR125-CR250-1992-07-ASV-F3-Forged-Brake-Clutch-Levers-Red-/181433875855?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item2a3e4d3d8f But I dont want to spend £100 then realise they don't fit. Any help would be appreciated

Hi I'm new at the club but I've had very much help reading the old topics with my glorious battle with all the problems and faults with my old DT 125 LC. Thank you for that Well I finally managed to det the old bugger up and running nicely. This ofcourse did not anymore satisfy my twisted need to fiddle about with the machine. Since I got a bargain price on a Gianelli exhaust I decided to get a bit more fun from the bike and bought me one. I was looking forward just to bolt it on and head for the fun. Did'nt quite go like that. The Gianelli was more of a weld on than bolt on. Had to shorten it from the rear to accept the original suppressor, weld a bracket to it a…

Hello there, I currently have issues with the power-valve on my DT, when the ignition is turned on the power-valve moves completely so it is not stuck. However when started the valve does not move at all, is there a rpm return wire to the power-valve that is faulty? Any suggestions would be much appreciated, Thanks

Hello everyone! I'm new the forum and also new to motorcycles. Never rode one... Ever. But a friend of mine was selling his TT 250 for really cheap so I went for it. It has been sitting for a few years. Last registered in 2008 so at least 4 years. I want to try and start it up but I don't know what steps to take before hand. Also I want to try for dual registration. Is this even possible with this bike? I live in California. I know I have to get all the lights for it, but I heard that the power output isn't powerful enough for legal street use... Hope to hear good news from you guys!

Hello, friends. First off I'm new to the forum and it is a pleasure to be part of the Yamaha community at last! I have wanted a Yamaha for a long time and I have finally come across a beautiful 1976 Yamaha DT400 which, after cleaning up the last owners messes in it, runs like a dream. .. after breaking my legs on the kick start. Once running, it putts along just fine. clean carb, new spark plug, fresh oil and gasoline, and cleaned the tank filter as well. Lights all work. Just need a new relay for the hazards. But the true issue right now is kicking her over. It takes an awful lot of kicking to get her started and I'm in a bit of confusion over it. Is there some…

Hi guys ive only just bought my bike today and its already running strangely. The bike will start up and run with choke off (down) for about a mile and will then cut out every time i come to a stop, and will only start again with the choke on (up) and will run pretty much spot on. Im sure that up is on and down is off or have i gotten this wrong? If not what could cause it to only wanna run with choke on? Do i have to adjust the mixture screw with choke off untill it idles well? Thank and i look forward to any advice
