The US ( and Aus ) standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England, and English expatriates designed the US railroads. Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used. Why did 'they' use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing. Why did the wago…

When running at idle and low rpm in traffic or pulling away, my thundercat runs rough, splutters and has little power. It happens when the throttle is just cracked open. Once through this and opened up its fine. I believe it started when i left it standing over winter ( I put it down to petrol gone off) I have cleaned out carbs, checked sync, changed plugs and checked for air leaks, all to no avail. Has anyone had similar problems? Is there anything else I could try?? Thanks - rosie

Hi Guys/Gals, I am new to the world of bikes after spending many years and money on sports/performance cars! I have recently passed my Mod 1 bike test and have got my mod 2 in the next week. I have already been biten by the biking bug! I'm just after a bit of advice on my first bike purchase. Im 29 yrs old and have been looking at some nice 07 plate r6's. I know that these are high performance bikes but have had mixed advice from my mates who own bikes. Some have said get a fazer/hornet to start with whilst others have said go for the r6 because I will only end up changing bikes after a short period of time because I will end up bored of a fazer/hornet and potentiall…

Okay, I'm not going to say who is arguing what point but here are both sides. Side A ) Buy a cheap bike, learn how to ride on that bike, sell bike, buy wanted bike. Side B ) Simply buy the bike you want, and learn how to ride on that. What do you think?

Hello all. New here, so please pardon my ill manners if this isn't the right place for this. Nothing much to say at this point than just introduce myself after joining and sitting a bit. Haven't actively ridden in more years than I care to think about (pre-kids). However, my daughter got her learner's permit a little while back, so I'll be trying to resurrect an old CT3 of mine and my brother's '91 FZR600 so that I can teach her to ride this summer. (Biggest lesson- unless things have changed, everyone on the road wants to kill you, so paranoia is just good sense.) I used to practically live on two wheels, so am looking forward to getting back in the saddle. I'm am…

Man sat watching telly. Missus is doing one of them silly word quizzes. Man,' Here you go then give me a sentance that will make me really happy and really unhappy all at once, see if all that wordplay is doing any good' She looks up calm as you like, looks him straight in the eye and says 'You can screw far longer than your brothers'
