Hiya all,

I'm sad to report that, due to my ignorance, my 15 year old Dragstar 125 has broke. I've had here for a thousand miles and She's been running lean due to cracks in manifold forcing my to ride full choke so I don't get killed on a12, all this has put too much force through a slack chain which has bent the neutral switch and bent a bolt which caused an oil leak so today is fixing that oil leak charge battery and see if she starts and see if we can diagnose any engine damage from the oil leak.

Now, if there is engine damage then I have been told maybe a big bore kit is way to go in terms of repair and upgrade. Thanks to this forum I already found out I need a viagro 125 bbk but I just want your opinions on the way I'm going bout this.

I'm also prepared to get new engine in which case i won't stop there I'll just bobber her up.

Be nice I'm still sensitive bout her and how she nearly killed me at 50 on country lanes !!

Thank you all [emoji110]

Well thats a bit of a shitter!

How much oil did you loose before you sat her up to fix her? if you lost a lot then you may as well just buy a new engine as the first things that would have started to suffer would be the top end (valves and cams) which im not 100% sure if you can get for the 125 draggy. if it was only a little bit of oil you may have dodged a bullet but as you said its would a check.

Now i must say this but..........why on earth did you not check the chain tension? this bent part could have been avoided but a simple check and would have meant NOT having to strip and split the box to replace it and a good few months of doing such a job.

Any who, good luck with it and myself and the rest of the folks here will no doubt give you advise and help with it. ;)

Yup I know I'm an idiot ! And all of it all the oil was gone, I was doing 50 round country lanes and CRACK chain came off cracked the bolt and neutral switch bike brok down luckily my backend didn't lock up otherwise that would have been game over for me that's wen I noticed the oil leak and a lot of it well it was now empty !

I guess my next question is new engine..... Obviously it's a draggie 125 frame but dimension wise am I limited to what size engine I Can put in there was thinking of getting a 250 or 353 draggie or viagro which ever I can find first.

I am now considering scraping the engine and using frame for bobber

Your engine will be ok as you didnt run it when it was dry (did you?).

Bbk will be a waste of cash. Loads of negatives for little real performance.

One bolt to sort and a new neutral sw. Then sort the fueling. Bikes tell you their troubles. You should listen.

As above. If it dumped it's oil and you have not run it since then do as Cynic says. Also sort out your manifold so you dont end up holing a piston when you do get it running again.

Check and adjust (if necessary) your chain every week. Keep on top of the small things that way you'll get a bond with the bike as well as noticing any issues before they bite you

I didn't run it no but I dunno if it was running dry before I broke down, I heard a bbk will be cheaper option to use as means to repair any engine damage.

I'm sure the draggie is just a 250 viagro engine sleeved down to 125 is it not? So I could use a bbk to repair cams and valves if they are damaged just need to reset timing on the heads ? I'm not sure if tht would work in no mechanic it's just an idea me and some friends came to based on little infomation we have, would that work if cams were damaged?

Problem being, the insurance being the first. Generally to prevent general buggering about the 250 top will not bolt straight on these days. Generally cranckcase oppenings and such need changing.

Secondly, Yamaha wont have wasted x pounds on a 250 crank in a 125, it will be a 125 crank. Thinner webs maybe. Def smaller bearings. Weaker clutch too and wheel bearings/brakes. Not enough exhaust flow.

Bikes with big bore kits die as a rule. Your asking 30% more than it was ever capable of, as a repair? Don't forget its not first class before you fit the kit.

Sensible option is fix the damage and see what else is/may/could be broke when you start her up.

Thanks for response cynic :)

I just jb weld the bolt that bent over causing the leak waiting for that to set then gonna see if thts done the job. Fills her up and see if she turns over

I'm using 1040 semi synthetic oil to use as means to diagnose the leak and see if she'll start but I was wonder if it's right oil to run on ???

Also u were saying bout the bbk over powering the 125 but this was my though surely if it's a 250 engine sleeved down it has potential to be a 250 or have the potential to handle a bbk.... I get the feeling u have already answered that bit sorry if u have just trying to understand :P

Without wishing to sound too harsh, but your lack of knowledge / maintenance of a pretty much indestructible engine caused this dilemma. Bearing in mind you didn't know how much oil was in the engine, you knew it had an air leak so ran on choke to compensate instead of fixing the fault and the most basic piece of maintenance i.e. Chain adjustment , you ignored to the extend that it came off the sprocket and potentially wrecked your engine tells me that you should just concentrate on fixing the bike properly and look after it until you pass your test (if you haven't already) and never mind any big bore kits that others have advised may only cause you more hassle

It may sound harsh but I dont mean to, just got you and your bikes best interest at heart

I had a 600 that was a sleeved down 750.

Put 750 barrels on and it becomes a 900, not to mention dif cams, chain, ig, top crankcase and the clutch and gearbox mainshaft were different.

On a 100% sound bike low miles that had its oil changed every 3000mls running like a swiss watch, yeah maybe bore it.

On a 125 for maybe 5hp.

Fix any damage and get it back up and running. Use it to learn maintenance, get into the good habits reqd to keep it roadworthy and you safe.

Pass your test, get a bigger bike, maintain the good habits, pass the draggie onto to someone else for the same purpose (preferably without bobbing/chopping etc)

Right after charging battery I tried starting her up but on full throttle she was barley holding out on any revs and not turning over completely so cleaned spark plugs coz they where dirty and made sure timings were lined up correctly still no progress so after all this and chat with my buddy, who knows a lot more about bikes than I do, we decided it seems like compression is low and cylinders are damaged so next weekend will be complete engine strip down to make a full diagnostic of what needs repair/replacing.

I'm trying to find new flywheel puller but it's proving difficult does anyone know if my buddy's flywheel puller from his ybr125 will fit my assembly ?

Engine rebuild is looking very likely atm almost certainty lol
