  1. Thanks for that I sort of guessed it wasn't going to happen. Interesting the Banshee generator fitts the 400 as well as the 650!
  2. I'm guessing you can't run a battery eliminator (capacitor in place of a battery) on the XS400 as it has a field controlled generator? Maybe if the generator core holds enough magnetism to let it self generate like a dynamo, IE not need a battery to get the generator fired up? I remember mine not running with a knackered battery tho. If anyone has experience of this I'd be interested to know if the 400 will run batteryless.
  3. New cdi unit for Honda XL XR 250/500 78-83
  4. getting and doing is the best way to learn. you'll never get the bike fixed chatting to this lot
  5. Thats all I do have at the mo, sold the others. The one I do have is a very early one (Feb 78) and is in bits for a major rebuild. Shame as it will be nice when its done, ally swing arm, tank, yokes, stripped right down and tuned to buggery! No ETA as the Speed Shop is extremely busy with testing work and developing new CDi units and I don't get the time I'd like to spend on it right now. Gez Kane has one of our CDi units on his MX project - that should be in the next edition of CB
  6. and so simple (so the points fraternity tell me). carry out proper checks of the wiring. Kill switch faults are favourate assuming you've gapped the points and set the timing properly. Technique is everything when starting these. Me showing how to start a big single - same engine as the XT500 - but with electronic ignition.
  7. go with what the handbook says, that way you'll get the right battery!
  8. bent gear selector? The mechanism on the other end of the gear lever can get damaged - used to see this often on crashed bikes. You may need to order the shaft the gear lever attaches to.
  9. testing CDi units requires a special test set, you can't do it with a multimeter. We have this equipment and can test your CDi www.rexs-speedshop.com
  10. That the funny thing with motors, just swapping the connectors won't make every motor run backwards. If you reversed the feild coils but kept the connectors the same then it would run the other way. this isn't always possible due to the design of the windings. Some motors you can do this to but not all
  11. a couple of months ago, if I didnt sign in for a week there would be 5 or more pages of new posts. Now I leave it a week and only 5 posts! What's going on?
  12. There is an adjustment on the pickup. Its just like the back plate on points, loosen the screws and move it to suit
  13. Nothing like confusing the issue is there! That is a totally different set up and not relevent to this model.
  14. When you get no reading on the multi meter, note which terminal the red lead is on. Connect this terminal of the rectifer to the lead that runs to the positive terminal of the battery on the bike.
  15. We don't have that fitted in our market, but I have heard before that you need to remove it and bridge two wires.
  16. The OEM manufacturers go to great lengths to stop one CDI unit fitting all. This is a very deliberate effort on their part as minor changes are made that serve no purpose except for preventing the unit working when fitted to another engine. We know that our SR500 unit is basically the same as the SR250 with a 8 wire CDi box, but we have not yet had a working SR250 so we can work out what fiddle factor was applied to stop the two units being interchanged. Our new units are 72.95 so hope you didn't shell out too much.
  17. Any alarm system you add to a bike can be removed in minutes. Seconds when you're good at it. Absolute waste of money. Datatool removal from my BMW......me doing it 5 minutes.......bike thief less then a minute as he's not taking care about the paint or scratching things The only security that works is when its built in to the bike's entire system as it can't be removed. Or accessed by home mechanics.
  18. Reminds me of when I used to service disco gear.......lights stopped flashing change the triacs in the lighting controller. In this case a driver transistor.
  19. I would go to the ebc website and down load their catalogue. It has nice pictures of the brake pads with i believe dimensions.
  20. I would go to the ebc website and down load their catalogue. It has nice pictures of the brake pads with i believe dimensions.
  21. there are 6 and 7 wire cdi units which aren't interchangeable. I have a list at home of what cdi will work
  22. we can test the cdi unit. We have a full test rig to run the unit off bike. The source coil is easily tested with a multimeter. Rex's Speed Shop have new built cdi units for most DT/YX/IT/MX 250-465 from the 70's. We'll be looking to include the smaller bikes as well. Testing is 15.00 and new cdis start at £77.00. Having seen 30 year old DT 400 units on ebay selling for £150 we think you'll agree a new item at £77 with a years warranty is good value! www.rexs-speedshop.com
  23. I say field windings as it seems to be suffering from reduced charging rather then a total loss of. You'll see by the price of the field windings this is a common failure
