Hi there, if you read my last thread you would of heard that I'm having problems with my dt50, well today I took off the reed valve to check for any obvious breaks or tears, we'll when I got it off, (after some grief from a specialist bolt) I found that the reed valve was fine but the crankshaft was full with petrol, when I kicked the bike it was splashing out, my dad said it could be the carb is ruined, but does anyone else know of any other things to check? Next on my list is to take off the head and check the piston rings, make sure there's no cracks in the head, but other than this, does anyone know things I should check?

The carb wont be ruined Kyle, it may need some attention...even a new part or so but its hardly the end of the world ;)

Meantime take out the plug tonight and leave it to stand...the longer the better. the excess fuel will evaporate. It's risky to continue riding it when it is awash with petrol like this because great quantities of unburnt fuel will be finding its way into the exhaust wich could be a fire / explosion risk. Tame your enthusiasm and leave it to stand is what I say

Is there anything to look for when I take the head off tomorrow? I know a fair bit about bikes, but I'm not that good? Thanks :)

Because a friend of my dad said that he thinks there isn't enough top end compression and gave me a list of things to check

Nope, but from what I've told him he thinks that there isn't enough compression

Kyle your bike was running but having issues with flooding, looking back at the video i can see that this was the case but guessing about compression is no way to go, if you want to know get a proper test done or at the very least do the 'blow your thumb off' test which isnt all that good but it's better than nothing

Hi Paul,

I have spent the whole day with a 'lad' who knows 'whats happening' with his Jog .... it is very difficult to actually tell them what is going wrong as they do not tell you the full story but if the engine is flooded perhaps the auto choke needs to be disabled, throttle wide open, new plug or cooked plug, and turn the motor over it should start ... they always think the worst is wrong <_<

Yes like I said you should stop messing with it, remove the plug and leave all that excess fuel to evaporate over at least 3 days in my opinion

Thanks Jim this to me is key to the problem here, bloody technology causing trouble, what use is an auto choke for riding it around a block of garages...no wonder it's flooded.

Whats the betting our kyle is always starting it up just to see it run, hear it, smell it...just lie we'd have done all those years ago. Trouble is now it's dumping fuel in and never getting hot enough to switch off, least we could just push the lever / knob back in just as soon as possible.

i left the plug out over night, last night, and this morning we took the carb out checked all the jets and put it back together, then we took it in the garages to check if it worked, which it didnt, but after i tried this, i held the bike at about a 45degree angle, and walked around in circles, and the after about 30 seconds the bike would actually reach maximum rpm (has a gauge on the clock) and then when i tipped it upright, it drove properly untill the bottom of the garages but then went into low revs again at the bottom, im going to go down to a dealership tomorrow (if my dad finishes work early) and get a price check on new carb, new fork seals, and some plastic screws (because it needs these too) hopefully these aint too expensive  but whats this about the choke? i know it has a choke on the handlebars, but its a cable.. not electronic
