Mate of mine is doing a charity ride to Peru and one of her sponsors is the Army. The White Helmets donation to the ride is a free off road training weekend at Bovington Camp in Dorset...... and I have been invited along Always wanted to have a go at this, I love mountain biking and skiing and was always up to my neck in muck as a kid so I reckon this is going to be a fun weekend. Just waiting for the bumpf to come through the post, but any experienced mud skidders on here can offer some words of wisdom so I get the most out of the 2 days ?

So you have bought a bike you cannot control for a bit of kudos? Don't get me wrong, it's a cracking bike, but seriously get yourself some post DAS training on it as soon as it arrives. Doesn't matter how much off road practice you've done, at 17 you don't have a lot of traffic experience, that coupled with a bike that is much more powerful than you are used is potentially dangerous. At the very least get yourself along to the nearest Bikesafe day after it arrives. Sorry for sounding like an old fart, but the fact you have ordered the bike without considering the insurance first suggests you're an impulsive kinda guy Just don't want those impulses getting you into strife As for the insurance, phone up, the internet quotes are not geared up to give the best quotes for new riders and restricted bikes, you're better off actually talking to a person.

Congrats Parkey! Welcome to the world of R6ers ! That link Gas Up posted loks great -Do It! and Bike Safe, will help build confidence and instill good habits before the bad ones creep in. Apart from the power, difference you will notice on the R6 is gear range, it loves to be revved and bends you would take in 3rd on an ER5 (or whatever you DAS'ed on) are better handled in 2nd on the R6. If anyone in your area is doing a slow riding course, get to it, the R6 needs slightly different handling and a supervised practice session will do heaps for your control and confidence. Hiya, First of all what you doing skiving off to Maccy D's on a Monday when the rest of us are at work Re the questions, you'll be safe for 20 miles on a fazer, I get that out of my R6 once the light and countdown marker come on. Sorry, cant help with the steering bit, except try an r6 then you'll think the Fazer turns on sixpence! For accessories, ie fancy bike bits, Powerbronze do some loverly stuff. Busters also do huggers, undertrays etc, if you order from them, get it all at once as I have found stuff comes in and out of stock. Don't use one myself (yet!) but have heard only good things about gel seats, have a scan through the touring sections, bound to be some folks on there with customised seats. One other tip, if you haven't already, get your suspension set up by a specialist, makes a big difference in comfort and handling, costs £80 - £90 down here (cheaper oop north I believe ) Where abouts are you based and which part of London do you commute to ?

LOL Drewps swerve and sophisticated ! BWJ, is this something you have read on a US forum/site perchance? Only it sounds like an Americanism referring to countersteering. You can move you body all you like, if you don't countersteer you won't get around the hazard. Theres a village on my way home with a series of 8 manholes in quick succession set out like a Twister mat, I love weaving around them just nudging the bars

Slow riding: Keep the revs up, slip the clutch, drag the back brake, focus on where you are going (ie not the curb) do not touch the front brake. Practice doing Ueys and figures of 8 in a carpark
