I am looking to customize my 82 xs4oo special II...I bought a small solo springer seat for the rear and I am going for a bobber meets cafe' racer look....the problem is people are telling me not to cut the frame behind the rear shocks, to me it just looks like it supports the seat. Will taking off a couple of inches make my bike weak. Has anyone done this before? Will it be O'K if I just weld some extra supports in there? Any advice is appreciated.

Just to give us Brits a heads up, Aldi are selling ultrasonic cleaners for £16, great for glasses, rings, erm.....carb jets, carbs, valves, etc etc they are 600cc and you can just get half a carb body in.

I'm cleaning out the green goop and varnish out of these carbs, obviously every jet and orifice is blocked. So I don't damage my pilot jet, can anyone tell me if the hole in the tip of the jet is the same diameter as the holes in the side? I don't want to try and twist through a wire strand that will open the hole up too large. Thanks again

hey all, im trying to find a parts number list for my xs500b. it has to be specific to the 500b (1975) or the tx500 (a, i found this site www.yamatopdog.com and i have been looking at it trying to figure some things out, but a parts list paired with the break down pictures i have would be helpful in making sure im getting the right items. anybody know where to look (besides ebay... ive looked. they are there, but i would rather not pay $15 for a cd someone burned on their computer).

ok, so heres the deal... replaced the oil seals on the forks yesterday, and when i emptied them, a total of maybe 50cc's came out of both of them together (specs call for 147cc's per fork)... after double checking that everything was tightened back up as it should be from the spindle up, i noticed that at speeds below 20 mph, if i take my hands off the bars and just let it coast, the bike wants to roll to either side in a slow swerve. it will roll left first usually and then correct and come back to the right in a weaving pattern as though i were slaloming around cones. i didnt mess with anything that should have affected the tightness of the head races (i dont …

I have downloaded the XS360 manual on this site and have found a couple of mistakes in it, and now I have some doubts on another issue. Does anyone have a factory manual so I can compare some figures. What I need to know are the resistance test figures for the voltage regulator. I have tested the alternator and field coil, plus the rectifier using the downloaded manual resistance checks, and everything tests proper and makes sense. I just want a second opinion on the voltage regulator. BTW Drewpy thanks again for posting that manual, what brand name is it?

Hi all, Does anyone know if there is a cheep modern (ie new) replacement to the carbs on my XS500? For example I was able to get a pair of brand new JRC carbs for my Triton for $150. I was hoping that someone would know of such a carb that would be interchangeable with the XS? Also while I have you here.... progressive fork springs that fit the XS500? My bike at the moment, tho it is slowly turning Red.

  15. I recently acquired an '83 xs400 seca. It's missing parts (gas tank, gauges, etc.), but it runs. I was thinking about modifying it, to give that 'cafe racer' look. The look is easy enough to accomplish, but how about improving the handling? I'm quite capable in the garage, but I am used to working with much newer bikes. (I realize this will never perform like the new ones, but I'm sure it can be better than it is...) Would a 2-into-1 exhaust help/hinder performance? (a friend had a gs450, got more power with stock pipes) I have nothing invested in it currently, so spending a few hundred won't kill me. But if I can, I'd rather do without buying anything I can ma…

Hi New to forum, back to biking. Just recently bought an RD350F2 to ride for the summer, back tyre is about done and wondered if any RD riders can suggest the best tyres for the summer months. Hopefully will be mainly dry miles unless caught out by the weather. Since buying the bike have noticed that it is really skittish when on the white lines!! Sometimes scaringly so as I whip out to overtake then again when crossing to pull in. Is this normal for the narrow tyred RD's. Current tyres are Avon Roadrunners which I used to use on my RD200 many many years ago. Any suggestions welcome cheers Dave

new to the forum, and read some posts on the xs400. I just picked up and 81 from a barn (litterally) and going throught the tear down/ rebuild. For rebuilding and tuning ease, can I run a separate fuel tank (i.e. lawnmower tank on handlebars) without hooking up the vacuum line on the right hand carb? Do I need to cap the vacuum line that ran from the carb to the tank when doing this? used to working on old cb500 carbs....got to admit, these seem a bit foreign to me. The cb's throttle cable actually moved the slide up and down, I'm guessing these slide up based on vacuum? I have all the goodies to get this right (manual, vaccum gauges, dwell meters, etc) …

  18. Started by Shakesbeer,

Hi! I just registered to the Yamaha Club. Last june I bought my first bike - 1985 Yamaha FJ 1100. I have already done some 5000 kilometers (3000 miles) and now I need to change the tyres. The sizes are 120/80 - 16 and 150/80 - 16. I would like to get some advice from more experienced FJ riders. I'll buy either Pirelli Sport Demon or Conti Sportclassic. Which one of these models is better? I mean with better leaning angle and better grip. The durability is a little less important for me. The bike shall be ridden on not that perfect roads - potholes and sometimes slippery tarmac. Thank you in advance!

If your bored - read on...I gotta Ramble some - my head is spinning I'm thinking - I'm thinking this is a big project.. Just a little leary on making it all happen, right and correctly... My plan was/is to rebuild this motor.. The task at hand seems enormous... I have rebuilt 350chevy and an 81 XJ 650..etc.. good with my hands - but everything seems ALOT more important bc its a V-max!! Before I jumped into this I checked into a 1500 kit from someone and the thought of dropping 6500. for a motor just seemed outta my budget.. So I started buying parts here and there and now I quickly see the cost rising.. I guess Im commited in my mind to rebuild this baby..Iv'e w…
