For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by Cy Welch,

I'm hoping someone can help. I have an oil leak from what appears to be the seal on the camshaft behind the electronic ignition module on the head on my 1980 XS400G. I'm hoping there is a way to replace this seal without breaking down the whole top end as this is the only leaking seal on the engine and if I can solve this leak I should expect to easily be able to get at least another year or two out of the engine before I take it out of service and refresh it. BTW this is the original engine with 45000 miles on the clock, compression still in spec and no apparent oil burning, just seeping (heaving seeping) from the cover over the igniter module. It's using about 1/2 c…

  2. Hi everybody, I'm new here but as I glanced (and searched) around I could tell you've all contributed to a valuable resource. My bikes a 1975 XS650 B but I know for a fact that it has the later model forks that are beefier (1978, I believe). I'm basically slowly checking the maintenance on everything since I bought the bike last summer and need to ride to escape these insane gas prices soon. My question is pretty simple: the local Yamaha shop has various fork oils and fluids (including an awesome looking Japanese import, OEM, Yamaha, tin canister of fork oil for $30) and I just grabbed some 10wt Rock Oil figuring it was probably going to work but I really didn't even no…

Hi all. I recently bought a 1979 xs400 to ride over the summer and then restore/modify over next winter. I am fairly new to motorcycles in general and very new to Yamahas. The bike has a couple of issues as it sits right now that I am trying to work out. The biggest problem I am having so far is locating parts. Could anyone point me to a good parts supplier or a listing of parts that are interchangeable with other bikes? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, i am new to this site and new to my (new to me) bike. I beleive its a 1983 Maxim 750. The model on the title says "RS". Can anyone confirm? It has 17k original, and sat in a garage for ten years. I am not new to working on bikes. It does have a slight miss from one or more cylinders just above idle when cruising. Possibly a plugged pilot circuit. Could a ruptured CV diaphragm do this too? Also, if you guys have any tips, tricks, suggestions, what to look for, what to do I really would appreciate it! Thanks a bunch guys, Rich

Hey guys I finally have most of my bike done other than the seat and a few other cosmetics. Anyway took it out today for what i was hoping to be a nice drive... I could only go 50mph max it's not the carbs Im almost certain because i had them apart twice and they are clean. I'm running on one cylinder cause I pulled the left plug wire while bike was running and it did what it should cut the bike off. Put that plug wire back on started bike then pulled left side and bike stayed running!!! Thought it would maybe be no spark pulled the plug started bike I had spark and am getting gas.....So what does this mean my valve is stuck on this side or what????? What can I do to fix …

I will try again here, as the only reply I got from a helpfull person was a dead link. Here was my previous post: just acquired a 1981 XS400SH Special. I assume it's a Canadian version. I'm brand new to bikes and I am looking forward to getting this one up and running. I got it from a local honest bike salvage shop for cheap. I was told it needs TLC clean up and a carbs cleaned. Can anyone point me to a PDF Repair and service manual for this model The ones I have found so far are a different model than this, perhaps US or British. Thanks

Hi all! I am new to this site, jsut dug it up while looking for info. I am the proud owner of what I beleive is a '72 Yamaha 360 single cylinder (rt3?). I don't know much about the bike, here's the deal. It was my Dad's bike, he rode it for 4 years or so, and then put it into storage. I've grown up tinkering with it, cleaning it to all ends, but never dove into the mechanicals. While, she runs, but the oil just pours right out of her. Bad seals? I bought some gaskets that I believe are correct and I am going to try to get her up and running again. If there are any other 360 owners out there, give me a shout, so I can leech off your knowledge! I will post pi…

Hi, does anyone know where I can get my hands on a YB100 front mudguard. I have found the rear mudguard but not the front. Will a front mudguard off a YAMAHA FS1E FIZZY fit, because the rear is the same?

  13. New to this forum. I did a search and didn't come up with an answer. Hopefully someone will know. Will an xs650 motor fit an xs500 frame? I have access to a xs500 with a clear title for $250.00. It needs lots of engine work among other things (wiring). I also have access to a good used 650 motor. Will it bolt to the 500 frame without modifying the frame or is it a major project/unworkable?

I have collected all of the necessary gaskets, seals, etc needed to do the following restore and line the gas tank refurbish the front forks (they are leaking oil, and are quite spongy) so, before i tear into either of these, i have a few questions....... 1) do i need to remove the head assembly from the bike to do this properly? my haynes and yamaha books both say i dont, but then dont explain how to do it without removing the whole head assembly. it seems like i should just be able to loosen the pinch bolts and pull them out of there..... 2) while i am replacing the front fork seals, are there any other problem areas that i should be looking for? anythi…
