The light had been on for a little while but last time I checked there was still a fair amount in the reservoir, just forgot to check today and unfortunately it ran out while I was going down the road. I know I f**ked up. I just ordered some oil yesterday as well. The bike died similarly to as if it had run out of petrol. I pushed it home and changed the plug and put some cheap 2 stroke in it that I had in the garage. Tried starting it and at first it would die straight away and sounded different. I then unscrewed the oil pump bleed screw and left that out until oil was flowing from the drain hole. Now when I start it, it will idle okay but it still sounds a bit different…

Probably the best pro Yam post I've EVER seen. Read this....it really is superb: Gotta chime in on this one. For my money, I am a proud Yamaha man all the way. I have owned Yamaha street, trail and race bikes for 30 years and have always regretted going with another brand. A single bike was the exception, a 1986 CR250R, a very fine ride in it's day. Yamaha's have traditionally always been a more stable mount at speed as opposed to headshaking, quick turning Honda's. This is a trait I treasure and apply in my riding. Down through the relatively short history of Japanese motorcycles (mainly since the 60's), Yamaha has been a consistent innovator and winner i…

1395 miles and 7 days later. The XT took it all in its stride. Oil used - nil. Coolant used - nil. Petrol used at an amazing 78mpg. Weather was pretty good. BUT the bloody midges, I've got bites everywhere :!: The XT was completely at home on this journey. The M6 from Chester Services to Moffat, with only one stop, was very boring, but the bike held 75 mph all the way and I was in better nick at the end than my mate on the CBR600. The Dullville is designed for this kind of thing, but the XT and the Africa Twin were almost on a par, with the Africa Twin offering better wind protection, but with hand numbing vibrations. Once into the hills the XT and Africa Twin were …

Hi, just wanting some advice before attempting a strip down of my DT 125 MX engine. I was enjoying the improved performance of the 125 after fitting a bigger carb purchased from Oldgit. I was experimenting with the jetting and was getting 10mph better than previous ie 70 when previous best was 60mph when I lost all power and a little later discovered I had holed the piston, fun whilst it lasted though!! Anyway this is now the opportunity to convert to 175. I have stripped the left hand side but before I strip the right side I wanted to check if it is possible to just remove the clutch basket before i split the crankcase. I just want to remove the crankshaft so I can clean…

The starter motor is making the nasty clicking noise and not turning the engine at all, also when the start button is pushed after maybe 1-2 seconds of clicking the neutral and 2-stroke warning lights go out and the clicking stops. Any help ideas to what is causing this would be really appreciated Vez.

Some has said that its the seal around the gearbox to the engine, is this right is it hard to do. also just seen on the forum it could be the water pump shaft seal

Hey guys I recently bought a 1998 DT, but giving it a good once over i've noticed that the powervalve pulley has been broken (The small diamond shaped piece has completely snapped) and this is causing it to slip when it opens. Just wondering if there's anywhere i could get a replacement? Pattern part or a used part is fine, just want to get the thing running well. Thanks

I have been retoring a '74 DT-175A. It had low compression. I got it started and ran it for a few miles on the hopes that I could free up the piston rings and improve the compression. Things were going well until the kick starter locked at the low end of the stroke. I pulled the engine and found that the piston skirt had broken off and pieces were locking up the piston rod. I have it in the shop to be rebored, but I am wondering what other parts (seals or bearings) I should replace as long as I have the engine torn down? There does not appear to be much wear. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks JW896

Hello, I have a hard time buying the correct plug for my bike. It is supposed to use a BR9ES which has threads that are about 1" long. In my town I found a similar plug but the threads are only about 1/2" long. The store owner told me that since it is shorter it won't get as fouled up as my other one. And so far my bike has been running better. But am I hurting it? Thanks

I have an early 80s DT175mx (2K4). I tend to just use it for off-road fun in the fields. I have neglected it for a while since moving home. A few years ago I swapped the rear Swing arms from a tubular type to a box-section type with great success. I am looking to MOD it a bit further and am looking to do away with the Magneto and points for a modern electronic ignition. Are there any modules that would suit this type of upgrade or should I just persevere with what I have got? I did find something on the Net about using the module from a honda C90? I have great plans for the Bike and one day I may get it road ready. I'm just tired of having to take a dozen or so kicks when…

It may sound kinda bumb, no punn intended, but has anyone installed one of these air horns on the ole xt? I use the bike for a few things and one is transportation while camping. On some of the more traveled roads there are a few people that don't bother to check the mirrors before they pull out. Anyway has anyone put one of these things on their xt and if so where did you put it and how did it work out? thanks

Hi, Newbie here, Have recently bought an 89 DTR125R, which wasn't running too well.. I firstly cleared out all of the old fuel, filled the tank with a good semi synth 2T, stripped and cleaned the flatslide carb. and cleaned and oiled the air filter. New BR9ES plug slotted into place, hit the button and off I went,, But not too quickly, it was stuttering and mis firing, then clearing a little but would not go past 40mph, My immediate suspicion was the power valve. Taking off the cover i was confronted with a short length of threaded bolt but no head and the pulley floating about doing not much. I removed the (DEP) exhaust and, following suggestions found on this site, reset…

Hi, This is my first post having just joined. Thanks for the warm welcome DirtyDT. I am in the process of buying a DT175MX 1981. It is claimed to be a stock bike with a 15T front and 49T rear sprocket. However with this setup it only does 50MPH at 7000 RPM (Claimed by dealer). By my reckoning this means it will only do about 57MPH on the redline. The dealer is in the process of fitting a 16T front sprocket as I intend to use it mainly on the road. However surely the top speed stated by yamaha of about 65MPH should be possible with the stock gearing of 15T and 49T with out redlining it? Even if the 16T sprocket cures the issue surely it is just masking a problem elsewhe…
