I'm looking at a 1982 Yamaha XS400R Seca as my first motorcycle. It's mostly to get to work and back, as gas prices are killing me. The bike has low miles, needs a few cosmetic things, (turn signals are not attached, and will need to be replaced) it may need a new battery as well. My question is: What type of things should I look for when I get pictures from the seller? What kind of questions should I ask him? What types of things typically go wrong with these machines? I own a yamaha fourwheeler, and I'm not afraid of wrenching on my own machine. I just want to avoid having a total lemon on my hands, I want a bike that I can ride consistently, not keep pu…

I'm looking for a new or like new carburator for this bike. I tried rebuilding mine and ended up with discontinued jets at the store and the float valve lets the gas leak right into the air filter.....I'm getting a little pissed. I realise I could adjust the floats tabs and find the jet but if I take that damn thing apart one more time and can find a cheap carb I may just buy it... Man it's hard to get that carb out even after removing the scews to the air box fitler... Any suggestions on carbs and an easier way to remove them?

i have a 1993 yamaha 650 max, it has been setting in a inside storage for over 20 years. when it was put up the motor was not stored right. it only has 1400 miles on it. i am trying to get it to run again. the problem is it seems to be froze up. i have pulled the plugs and put mystery oil in the cylinders with no luck. i have pulled the starter and carbs also. i can not find any where on the motor where i can use a wrench to break the motor lose. i try to bump it in gear to see if it will turn over but that dosen't seem to work. i can't imagine it is frozen that bad. any advise would be appreciated. i prefer not to pull the head if possible. thanks in advance. grm

so i just purchased an 86 fazer last week as my first bike. it needs some work but i really like it so far. as of right now, i know it needs the carbs tuned, a headlight lens, and a front tire, but other than that, its good to go. ive been riding it as is so far. ive ridden it over 400 miles in less than a week already, i guess im addicted. i have a few questions. i know it is running very rich. the guy i bought it from said the previous owner put stage 2 or 3 jets in which i think leads to why it cuts out at 8.5k rpms and gets horrible gas mileage (about 30mpgs). so i need to get the carbs tuned. also, it has a very erratic idle. sometimes it idles perfectly at abo…

Hello there, I'm pretty new to the motorcycle build/rebuilding scene and i was just wondering if anyone out there had some knowledge on the 1986 FZ6. I've been riding for like 6 years now however i never really had the chance of tearing down and rebuilding a bike till now. Current project is making a 1986 FZ6 into a track bike for some of the local tracks in Wisconsin, till i get some experience and then upgrading later down the road. I got it free, it is missing quite a few peices (none too essential like plastics) but it does had a wire mess going on. It also has stage 7 jets and a kerker header with no can. If anyone has any tips on building one of these guys up …

Hello everybody, this is my first post. I have been riding bikes for a while. Started with the MSF course, bought a Ninja 250R, graduated to a 1988 HD Sportster all tricked out and ended up with a 2001 Honda Valkyrie that I am currently riding. It has 32K on it. I am picking up a 1986 FZ600 in the next few days locally. It has been repainted silver and hasn't been ridden or started up in 2 years. When the owner tried to start it, the carbs puked fuel. He took them off and cleaned them but they still puked. My guess is the floats are gummed and stuck. It also needs a rear tire and a basic freshening up. It has 13K on it and hasn't been registered or really driven for 5 y…

Hello, I'm new the forum, and my 1986 FZ600 has been acting up. I recently bought it , and everything was working great. After about a week it started to get progressively worse , and now it just wont turn over. --I'm not sure if this is the issue, but I put mid grade gasoline in it. I took it too a mechanic and hes convinced that I need some fuel parts to get it working properly, so I found whats called a "used 1986 fuel pump set" on ebay, and I am currently waiting for it. --Others have told me the bike does not have a fuel pump The description below is from what I found on another forum, but unfortunately it was the users only post. Does anyone have any ideas?…

I got a yamaha not to long ago. Its a 1987 Yamaha Virago. It doesnt have an instrument panel due to the previous owners wife putting a hammer to it. Currently i clock my miles with the Odometer. I reset it to all Zeros when i fill up the tank. The bike starts to choke between 75-80 miles then i have to put it on reserve before i get to a gank station. It takes 10 dollors to fill it up... If im Somethings not right. $3.53 a gallon of gas 10.00 to fill up Thats 2.83 gallons in my tank. 75 miles divided by 2.83 gallons... thats 26.5 miles per gallon I know im a new biker but doesnt that just not seem right? Hello everyone, I bought and FZR 1000 this past year and the shocks are completly thrashed. I really need help getting the shocks fixed. I looked up a few and I am not sure what options are fisable. It seems the best option is the OHLIN shocks. http://www.oncycles.com/browse.asp?departm...ory=sfy_fzr1000 This is going to cost me 739.00 plus tax. However i saw another company Hagon produces a non gas shock and i am not sure if this absorber will work on my bike. I have already purchased from JC Whittney and they sent me the wrong item. Can anyone tell me if this Hagon product will work for me? http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?ca...;tier3url=Hagon IF not what m…

Bought a 1989 radian a couple months ago and plan on doing some stuff to it this winter. rather than make multiple threads with separate questions I figured I would make one with a couple questions for you all. 1. I would like to go mono shock, what stock bikes with monoshocks have swing arms that would bolt into my frame with minor mods or no mods? 2. If I have to use the stock arm can I swap to a disk brake? 3. Do pod filters require syncing or rejetting? 4. What streetbike tanks have a center tunnel that I could use? Feel free to answer what you can and give me insight thanks!
