Hello, I'm new to this forum and looking for some help regarding a 1991DTR build I'm nearly finished on. Problem is it aint running due to a suspected electrical issue. The bike came to me as a basket case with no loom, its since had a total rebuild and engine is sound with excellent compression and all fresh seals etc. I had done my best to get a loom together that closely matched the original diagram minus all the bits i didn't want/need. The best i have had when trying to start the bike is a brief coughing sound from the motor and a rather pathetic puff of smoke from the exhaust as if firing but only from the force of my kick and no more. After loosing my patience i have taken it to my local and trusted shop to have them look over the bike and they have concluded the problem is with a weak spark and to go right through the electrical system.

I have now replaced the stator, coil, HT lead plug and cap. I reevaluated the wiring diagram and come up with what to me seems to be the simplest way to get the bike running to eliminate my loom as a problem (I am no expert on this and it could be completely wrong). Plenty fresh fuel....Still no go. Its almost as though there is one of the engine kill functions like side stand/neutral switch in play. Do i fork out for a CDI incase this is at fault? is there anything else i could try? kind of at a loss with it now so any input would be greatly appreciated.

here is a rough idea of how i have this wired....im hoping some bright spark will point out to me exactly where I've gone wrong and why the thing aint working

I'd try linking out the sidestand and kill switch and then see what happens

Thanks Finnerz thats a good point. I believe the kill switch function is taken care of with this wiring but linking out the side stand switch will be easy enough to try. There also seems to be something going on with the oil level sender (No19) and the neutral light (No31) that i may need to address. Will have a play this afternoon let you know if i have any luck

Oil level sender and neutral light are linked to bring on the oil light in neutral as a circuit test.

That should in theory work. Have you tried splashing 12v on the coil feed(disconnected from the cdi ofc) that way you will know how good the coil, lead and plug are. As powering then disconnecting the coil should give a spark.

Neutral and oil light come on off a relay if I'm remembering right. At least on my DT there's a relay anyway.
