1989 Dt50mx first restoration project!

Hi there guys, 

So I've started my first restoration on my little dt50 I picked up for 50 quid. I never planned to start a project but I always liked the little dt and when one came up at this price I thought well why the hell not.

It didn't take me long to strip it down to the frame but thinking I've picked the wrong time of year as its very cold in my garage :(

Can anybody advise me if I should get the frame and swing arm painted or powder coated? Also I've been searching for a new rear shock as mines pretty shot.

 

I've taken the carb to bits just yesterday and its cleaned up very nicely however when removing the insulating ring fitted above the carb mouth seal it broke :(

Can anybody tell me where I can get a new one????

I don't think I'm going to do much in the way of taking the engine apart as my mechanical knowledge is quite limited so I'll probably just change the gaskets, fluids, clean it up and paint it. 

 

Anyway thats about where I am at the moment, if anyone could give me some advice or has experience with these bikes i'd love to hear from you. 

 

I'll do my best to update the post as much as I can!

first thing I would do is put stuff to one side that needs specialists to do plating etc

 

then box the other stuff into modules so you can concentrate on one thing at a time.

 

try fowlers parts online as the have a parts fiche you can look at and get part numbers (sometimes its cheaper on ebay) and also see if the part fits other bikes which braodens your search

 

I prefer powder coating and they also sandblast it as part of the charge. my local one charged me £65 for the gilera frame and swing arm, depends where you live. make sure you view their work as I've had stuff done whichj was terrible and was so thick in places, parts didn't fit

Good choice of bike to start with, and even better for £50!, I've paid more for absolute wrecks and used them as donor bikes. 

Re the parts, as mentioned try fowlers, or wemoto/yambits, second hand parts from European eBay are also a handy source. 

As for the sealing ring you should be able to tidy up the edges and reuse it it, the intake manifold is around an inch long so it wouldn't  hurt to lose a few mm, definitely remove those little tabs on the inside of the clamp though, otherwise they pinch when torqued (like yours have started to bend) and snap the clamp, ideally cut them down with a hacksaw or dremel. If you get stuck I have another used TK carb up for sale.

Drewpy sorry if this is a stupid question but what do you mean by plating? Good advice on putting stuff into boxes as things can get over whelming if you have more than 1 thing on the go at the same time.  I'm now sending out a few emails to local powder coating companies. 

Foamy I'm not sure if the part can be saved, see what you think-

When you talk about trimming down the tabs do you mean the bits I've circled?

If I was to trim them so there is a gap of a few mm would that be ok?

Yeah the ones circled are the ones to be shortened, the cab shouldn't make a difference, it's the black ring inside that does the majority of the sealing. 

Didn't notice at first that much material was missing off the sealing ring, can't think of where you might find another one, if you have a friend handy with a lathe you may be able to spin up a PTFE or Nylon sleeve to fit in place of it

PLating, chrome and zinc plating of course, are you going to fit rusting bolts in a repainted frame?
