  4. Left the military in January... I guess I missed the desert so much I went back voluntarily, currently over near Kabul. I'll be back in blighty in March, got something special hidden away in the unit for when I get back.
  5. I've been waiting for this... Got myself a new toy, I'm only about for 90 days the year so handy to just be able to insure and ride.
  6. I'm out now, a dirty horrible civvie... Found my way back to the desert for some reason . The MXs either had a TK or Mikuni 14mm jetted 78 from stock. With the 60cc kit I had on mine and DEP exhaust etc I had to jet up to 88 to keep the mixture right, if a bit rich, ran just peachy on the stock carb though. Dellorto carb kits sometimes come with a selection of jets, might be worth a try if you want to mess around with mixtures. Blew mine up atleast 3 times though. Would do 55+ flat out but you'd feel it start to pinch up, keep at 40mph all day though.

  12. Hiya peeps. Few things have changed now and it looks like i may be staying in the country even longer still, so its only right that i drag something else back to my lair to play with. This time, it happens to be another XS... i dunno why but i bought my first one about 6 months ago, then another one came along... now they just seem to be gathering. Anyhoo, long story short it was a facebook find, someone posted up a very basic ad with no pictures, asked me to send him my email address so he could send over some snaps, heard nothing more for a few weeks and then lo and behold out of the blue the guy messaged me over a photo, it looked dusty and dirty and a bit sad... Off i went to Letchworth to pick it up, the seller was really nice and even gave me a demonstration of his tame squirrels (I shit you not peeps, there were like, 4 or 5 big ass squirrels in his garden, and they were feeding out of his hand!), the bike is a 1977 and has 11000 miles, and as the story goes he bought it to ride for the summer, parked it over the winter and it wouldnt start when he came to use it the next summer... piston rings had gummed up, so he stripped it and put new rings in it, rode it for the summer and parked it up... next summer comes and it wont start again, so he put a sheet over it in his garage and there it stayed for 30 years until i bought it. Havent got any decent pictures yet because its always freezing cold, raining or dark when im at my unit, but first impressions of the bike are impressive, minor surface rust on the chrome mudguard but it is all complete and original, only problem is ive got it to turn over but there is no spark on any of the three cylinders, leads me to be believe maybe theres some points issues going on? anyone aware of any common problems or known faults? Overall very happy with it, want to keep it in its working clothes and just enjoy it now that i have a bit of free time.
  13. Errr... Basic knowledge... Don't quote me on this but most of the early small capacity bikes such as the LB/QT/PW shared a lot of components and principles Its akin to the Honda Cub C50/C70/C90, Yamaha had the V50/V70/V90 respectively. Running gear is similar to a chappy, low range is literally just another reduction gear, you'll still have two geara but they'll be half the road speed, handy if you want to go offroad for some reason. as you increase your speed the second gear will engage automatically via a dog clutch inside the transmission, not really a serviceable part so if it's working don't worry about it. The "lurch" when shifting into high is not unusual, all those freewheeling bits in the transmission being dragged around by friction have to mesh when you select your gear, if it's particularly aggressive I'd give your clutch a quick check to make sure it is disengaging as it should at idle (springs keep the clutch shoes pulled in at idle, as you open the throttle the clutch spins faster centrifugal force pulls them out engaging the clutch bell and driving the transmission) Low range usually has a detent you have to press down to engage it, probably to stop you going from high to low by accident or missing neutral. Stalling issues are unlikely to be battery related, they are very simple with just a primary coil in the stator to keep the engine running, try giving your idle screw a half turn and see how you go, or see my previous comment about checking your clutch Choke ON is with the cable fully pulled out... So lever pointing away from the bike. Hope this helps, keep us posted with your findings and no doubt somebody will come up with a proper answer or know where to find it. If you throw enough shit at a wall, some of it will stick.
  14. The floor space has been filled up with cars and stuff, so I tend to hang the bikes from the ceiling now. The XS will be a keeper, I've still got the XS500 flat tracker I bought earlier this year so I guess now it's a matching pair of sorts. As to how usable it will actually be on the road, I don't know... Might be alright for scratching around a track but the A339 in rush hour might get a bit tender on the wrists.
  15. Well, it wouldn't be a new month without something new coming into the unit. Continuing the trend, it's an XS500... Built to do 70's class races in France, owner did two races, had a motorcycle accident (not on the track) and couldn't ride the bike any more. There are no lights, but unlike the flat-tracker it has its brakes, good tyres and has passed race scrutineering before, appears to be well built and very clean, had it running today and it certainly gets a move on, charging system appears to be intact, needs a silencer to be anywhere near road legal though, figured it could be an early birthday present to myself. Oh and I also picked up a Yamaha TY80, no idea why or what I'm going to do with it but It appealed to me, might come in handy if Foamy Jr was to ever appear (and on this day the devil will put on his ice skates)

  19. Start simple, it'll save you a headache later on. Depending what year your YBR is it may have full electric authority; choke, starter interlocks etc. check your battery/starter solenoid/starter terminals are all tight, maybe even hook it up on jump leads and see if the symptoms are still there, you'd be surprised what gremlins can come out if your bike hasnt got a stable 12v power input. maybe see if you can get your hands on a multimeter and check the resting voltage of your battery. Maybe check your plugs and wiring behind the headlight, not uncommon for pins to corrode in place or to come loose whcih can also cause spurious symptoms
  20. Played with these two today, the red one runs after cleaning the points, carb and fuel tao, did a few laps of the farm track, so that can go into storage. The blue one, well... the piston was stuck in the bore and had been partly disassembled, manage to get it to kick over but not sparking yet, might be able to get it fired up tomorrow though.

  22. Hey peeps. Picked up another addition to the fleet a couple of weeks ago, a little QT50 I found on the auto jumble at the Dorset Steam Fair, in my drunken logic I decided it needed to come home. Needed a new set of tyres and the brakes fettling (even after cleaning and roughing up the drums, the rear brake would only put out 27%, the MOT requirement was 25%), nevertheless it did eventually pass. So it now has a fresh 12 month ticket, I use it for riding around on the airbase when I'm at work, the top box is large enough for small aircraft spares or a crate of beer and it has "No Fat Chicks" written on the back in permanent marker So far nobody has died or been arrested but it's early days yet,

  24. Where the slide goes into the top of the carb right on the end of the throttle cable, it has a little brass needle that sticks down through the carb, it's a bit fiddly to get to but if you can unscrew the cap on the top of the carb where the throttle cable enters it you should see what I'm on about.
