    Rain Ride

    What a load of crap, dont believe a word of that "If you dont ride in the rain, you dont ride" stuff. Its like saying i love to stand in the rain so i can get wet and cold. I hate riding in the rain and avoid it as much as possible, but in Ireland its impossible. Ive had to ride with no protective gear except a helmet on many occasions cos all my gear was drenched and hung up drying. As said above, adjust your riding style and ride safer, cars cant see you as well also. Ease off those bends and watch the flooding around bends . I got caught in the heavy rain the whole way home without my visor two and a half hours from home,had open face and had sunglasses, it was a beautiful morning by the way and i usually have the visor in the auld saddlebags but this day i didnt. Craziest trip ever. face burnt off me with the rain and eyes wrecked from straining through droplets. Night riding in the rain is mental, hate it hate it hate it. Some kinda crazy xbox game. I ride a dragstar FFS which has F all breaking so riding at night is scary even without the rain... If you dont feel comfortable riding in the rain....DONT, pull in to a petrol station have a coffee and see if it gets better. Im comfortable riding in the rain but ride to YOUR limits its YOUR life, YOU take the risks and dont let anyone push you beyond what you feel safe with. Dont buy into the bullshit of "im a real biker cos i do...." Stay safe lads

    and four pairs of underware..... use em like visor tear strips But there is nothing like having a spare balaclava in the pocket during a long ride on a warm day when it suddenly rains cos you can always throw on the dry warm one on the return journey. mmmm toasty... I suppose im the only one who does this, i dont care. I also carry spare ear plugs too.. just in case i loose one..

    Well i usually wear Akito Python textile jacket and pants (apparently waterproof- ha ha yeah right) Also have a cheap set of raingear which is in and out of the saddlebags more thanthe tank is filled. Hein Gericke leather jacket and denim (draggin) jeans for the rare summer day we get (but raingear on standby). Akito Viper boots and Akito leather gloves for all occasions (thermal gloves worn inside for colder days). Shark open face helmet with visor for cold/wet runs. Two light and two heavy balaclavas, weather dependent. Thats the lot...
  7. What the.... indians...nice. Always like the 'idea' of owning an indian but never will. They just have a more noble rep than HD. I checked out their website ( [url=") and its all very cloak and dagger. They dont even have a pic of the bike and are expecting you to put a grand deposit for next years model, i dont quite get it.   8. Oh yeah dont forget about running in the tyres, so for the first 100 miles or so dont lean too much when cornering. Hopefully the guys at the garage will give it a look over before you buy so i wouldnt be too worried about the bike itself. Also dont rev the Sh*te out of the lovely new engine for a while, ease her into it. mmmm i want a new bike.....
  9. Congrats on the purchase. Ya picked a good one. I dont know what bike you trained on or did your test on (they are usually lightweight bikes arent they???) but the extra weight of the dragstar might take a bit of getting used to, so take it handy around the turns starting off. Keep a good wide stance to balance the weight in a stationary position. Apart from that you will be grand, you will be throwing it into corners in no time. Best of luck
  10. I have a bit of a conundrum at the moment and im looking for a bit of advice. The outer race of the bearing in the back wheel is not snug in the hub of the wheel so i need to fix it and i have a few options. 1) Go off and locate a 2nd hand rear wheel, it seems the more logical thing to do. 2) Buy a new hub and re-spoke it to the existing rim. 3) Re-machine the hub to take a larger bearing unit. 4) Use some sort of compound (bearing compound or chemical metal) to permanently glue the outer race to the hub. 5) Hands over the ears and ignore the problem. Problems with the above options: 1) Cant find a 2nd hand wheel anywhere ebay, local papers, word of mouth, nada!! But head to the main dealer for a whole new wheel $$$$$$$$ 2) Getting a wheel re spoked $$$$$$ 3) Getting someone to go it right and accuratly???? not around here. 4) Using a compound is still only temporary and the true centre of the wheel might be inaccurate. 5) na na na im not listening...... Has anyone else had that problem before and how was it fixed. I have a temp solution by hammering a few notches in the inside of the hub to catch the outer race of the bearing but i need to get it fixed. Im not sure what to do, does anyone have a solution.... Any help greatly appreciated, Thanks
  11. Electrics ahhhh keep me away..... Simple thing is check all your connections and wires, make sure none of the wires are bare or burnt. Might take a bit of digging to get to all the wires buts at least you'll know its not them thats the problem. Im crap with anything electric on the bike, so im probably the last person to listen to... Best of luck with it..
  12. Now im fairly new to this site but its really opened my eyes. To be honest i like harleys and their tradition, but the bikes are fairly dodgy especially on anything else than 'Highways' but still i like them. Might even buy one sometime, when i have more money than sense... But i never knew many harley owners were so insecure about their bikes, I wouldnt even think of going on another motorcycle brands website and continually saying Yamaha are better, even though they are but thats not the point. Its funny that the great harley tradition of cutting and bobbing bikes to bring weight down to somehow get better handling on those "tractors" was taken into the the modern era by many manufacturers using high tech plactics which reduced weight and increased handling. "Oh id rather drive a half ton piece of metal around and put her into 1st every time i need to round a turn" I respect all bikers and their personal choices but its becoming clear to me that harley owners are just stuck in the past and are just ignorant to performance bikes, whether cruiser,tourer or sport. Go back and watch easy rider and dream of going back to the 60's and cruise at 25mph on a quiet highway or catch up with the rest of the world and ride or even just stop making a fool of yourselves.
  13. Yeah it sounds like the starter clutch to me too. The idler gear could be stuck.. You can check it by taking off the alternator cover and intermediate gear and shaft (small gear to the left). you should be able to rotate the idler gear (large gear) anticlockwise but not clockwise. If not then its the starter clutch. Make sure the starter gears are catching too, it could be slipping gears. Best of luck with it..

  15. Danger factor for me is ME. Me riding too fast or not keeping my head in the game. A close No.2 is fecking cagers. They drive around without caution or regard for anyone, they only look out for other cars and their brain is wired that way. If its not big they aint going to see it. I think every biker should blow a truck horn when ever a car comes within 100 yard of a bike front, side or back. Yuo can adjust for gravel and id rather hit an animal than a lump of metal going 55mph towards me. Feckin cagers....

  17. Sorry no idea but what you could do is go to the next rally and park beside a 650 and wait till the owner has had a few beers in him and strike up a conversation and slip in that question and oops out of your pocket falls some wrenches ....and let the fun begin..
  18. Howya, im not sure about what the heck those L shaped bars are but i have a windshield myself and if you are still stuck just let me know. Mine is pretty simple with two s/steel clamps around the forks and bolted to thewindshield. If you are still having problems let me know and i can put up a few pics of assembly, but your windshield could be totally different from mine...
  19. You might need new seals and a change of fluid. It could just be a case of the previous owner hadnt either enough fluid in the forks or hadnt changed the fluid in a while and let the fluid degrade but its worth draining out the forks and replacing the seals. Just to be sure. The forks themselves should be fine unless visibly damaged and out of line in any way but by the sounds of it its just the fluid.
  20. Before you take off the speedo housing, you must disconnect the speedometer cable from the wheel. If like my bike, the cable runs from the speedo housing unit to bottom of the left hand front fork. Just unscrew the bolt where the cable meets the fork and detach the cable from the wheel. You should then unscrew the speedo housing and care fully lift the housing. Then replace the faulty bulb. Hope it helps....

(just joined so reply maybe too late but anyway) Sorry im not sure of prices in the UK but just a reminder to not go and blow all your cash on the bike and then budget shop for the essential gear. Dont know if you have gear yet but anyways. Get a decent helmet for starters and get a good jacket, pants boots gloves etc. You know what i mean but all the extras need to be budgeted for along with the bike. The gear can take 200-300 out of that grand straight away. Doesnt matter if its a new bike or a piece of s**t, its the gear thats worth the extra cash if something happens. Happy shopping

Well how are things, Name is Luimni, from Ireland, been riding my XVS650 for about a year now and loving her to bits (well not quite bits but she needs some TLC and a good service - any day now i promise) Good to see a 'Star' orientated forum but it seems kinda slow at the moment somehow as it doesnt reflect the amout of dragstar/v star etc owners out there. This forum must be a well kept secret. What are ye hiding.....come on tell me... Weather getting worse here, havent even had a decent Summer so it was nearly all rain gear this year, god damn it.. Recently decieded to cut some weight off the bike, i took off the saddlebags, back seat and windshield and now she is just throwing herself into turns, ah nothing to do with me but she loves to hear the footpegs scraping.... I promised her that i wouldnt take her out again till i gave her a full service - dragstars are so gullible !!! I might add my one cent to the previous posts... cos im bored but looking at the dates most questions were probably solved long ago, but just in case.... Keeps safe lads, rubber side down....
