Hi, On my XJ the air box is a bloody great thing that gets in the way of everything when you try to work on the carbs, you can get it out but it is a right bastard to do, if you remove the carbs AND the carb mounting tube things (can't remember the name of them) you can draw the air box forward from it's place inside the frame but that's it you cannot get it to turn so you can remove it, I would suggest that you get a hack saw (no joke) and saw off the end where the air filter goes, other wise you can take the HEAD'S OFF to remove the thing but that is a bit extreme just to fit K&Ns to your bike, the ONLY way I have found to get it out is to take the engine out and that's just bloody ridiculous, as foamy say's tuck the breather pipe out of the way and it should cause you no problems but DON'T kink it, the battery box/tray thing is not part of the air box so you should be able to ignore that. It really is a stupid way to design something it looks like a bit of an afterthought

Some people don't mind you just asking for help up front but most like to know who they are talking to before they help out. Just think about it, if your in a pub and ask a total stranger how to fix your bike they will tell you to fuck off or ask you to step outside for a robust discussion about your manners, so I suggest that you go to the "new members" section and tell everyone who you are BEFORE asking for help. Or not, that's up to you.

Having just rebuilt and reprayed 2 of these things the first thing to do is look at the wiring, as usual it will be the yamaha horror show under the seat, loose connections and bodges from previous owners, I wish you luck! If you really want to dump the rack then give me a call and a price I don't mind if it's sissy I need one. Martin.

Hi Livsey, on my XJ the Chrome surround has 2 philips screws that serve as retainers and adjusters, before adjusting them I would suggest that you whip the headlight off and oil and clean the screw threads as they are usually covered in crud and rust, other than that it's quite easy to get the lights set up. P.S. Sorry should have also said that there are 2 screws underneath the cowling that actually hold the headlamp surround in place, up underneath the lower trim

Hi Thumper, check the fuel lines first and make sure they are ok, they can get blocked same with the fuel tap filter. Pipes can collapse under pressure so if they are a bit old and knackered change them out. might I suppose be a blocked jet but then it would do it in all gears and not just 5th also check the gaskets around the carb to make sure they are not split (to much air) other than that your on your own with out more info to go on.

Fraid so mate, should move but 5mil seems a bit loose, ok so that is one knock sorted and as you have it apart check every thing else out as well and yes decoke it while you can, don't forget to check the crank shaft as well while your at it one thing can lead to another I'm afraid.

Jimmy, try to move the con rod up and down to see how much play there is and if it moves where is it moving also look at the main bearings (crankshaft) to see if there is any play in that, there should be some small amount of movement in both but no more than a couple of thou, then look in your manual to see what it says about end float play and try to measure what you have compared to what it should be ( couple of thou is a guess) once you find out where the play is come back with the info and we will try to help out. Plus just because it sounds knocky from the back of the engine that don't mean that's where it's coming from so check both ends of the crank shaft, it might be an oil pump that is giving up the ghost and have nothing to do with the con rods or crank shaft. Simon BEFORE you buy anything check the connectors on the CDI unit, when I checked mine last year the actual connectors were rotten and although they looked ok there was actually no wire between the connectors, I had to chop them all off and redo them. Plus 2 of the leaves? that form the connection inside the plastic surround were broken off completely.

Columbos got my vote, and make the car test harder, anyone can pass it and then it's flat out in every gear, if your 17 and just passed your car test then the same as bike riders move up in power as you get better not straight onto some earth shattering monster. just in case you think I am biased I am 59 and had a car licence since I was 17 and a bike licence since I was 16 and the only time I was injured was on my bike (head full of wool female!) so DON'T ask bikers how to stay safe ask BLOODY motorists to stop using us as targets.,

Welcome to the YOC jimmy, Oh my what have you done? Still at least you like the bike and that's a start, don't know much about the XVS125 but they look cool. Next time you have a bevvy switch OFF the computer. Still good luck with the engine probably just needs a few parts and it will be sweet as a nut, big ends are easy to replace and you can get the crank reground so not a complete disaster, oh and thanks for giving me my first laugh of the day just off now to change my underwear.

Hi, I think you may have missed the point of OGs comment, this section is to introduce your self, just like you would in the pub or on the side of the road, you wouldnt just rock up to someone and say "MY BIKES BROKE HOW DO I FIX IT?" would you? So say Hi and tell us where your from and what bike you have and then go to the "WORKSHOP" section and post your problem there, some one will know about your problem and get back to you with a fix or maybe your the first one to have this problem and so everyone will have a great time trying to work it out for you.
