  1. i know my fuse panel was screwy like yours.. my headlight worked sometimes.. figured out it was the damn fuse panel causing me troubles. replaced the whole fuse box via the instructions here http://www.yamahaclub.com/forums/topic/16081-xs400-links/ thing is a champ now.
  2. well here is my update. i re-jetted and put pods on. my idle seems perfect and the bike sounds a lot throatier/deeper now. I guess I got lucky cause I didn't do anything except go up one size on the main and pilot. didn't touch anything else and it seems to idle / run great. here is my little guide. The Carburetor is a Mikuni BS34. The Service manual says Main Jet = 135, Pilot Jet 42.5 So I ordered from mikexs Pilot Jet - BS30/96 Type #45 Pilot Jet - Part #48-0607 Main Jet - Large Round Type - #137.5 Main Jet - Large Round Type - N100/604 Part #48-0120 and from eBay 2 54mm Universal Pods since the carb opening is 54mm. the specs were ID 54mm /Overall Height:3.5" / Outside Diameter at Widest Point: 3" / Outside Diameter at Top: 2" and also from eBay a 12mm Air Breather Pod Vent Intake (stuck a double A battery in the rubber for a week to stretch the rubber so it would fit on my breather) Step one open float part of the carb and you will see unscrew the pilot jet and main jet and you will then have screw in the new jets and put back together. attach vent pod, reattach carb, then throw the pods on. finished product another note when the carb is open spray it real good with carb cleaner for grins. also if I can do this anyone can.. cause I don't know diddly.
  3. Main Jet - Small Round Type #155 Main Jet - Small Round Type - N102/221 Mikuni type - Fits: 1970-79 Stock XS650 Mikuni BS38 CV carbs and also used as the Air Jet on 1980-84 XS650 Mikuni BS34 CV carbs. Sold in 2's. apparently the small main jets are used as the air jets for the BS34 carb i know this cause i accidentaly bought the small main jets for my carb this last week and looked it up and saw that. i ordered new ones from egay. 7 dollar mistake
  4. do you have a Mikuni BS34 carb? if so mikexs has it for 1 dollar. http://www.mikesxs.net/products-38.html#products your carbs are nice and clean. do you have to replace the carb gasket when you open the carbs up?
  5. people get frustated when user's first posts are technical questions instead of properly introducing themself in the http://www.yamahaclub.com/forums/forum/48-noobs/ section. im sure ill be there one day but im not yet.
  6. tom sellick! the pilot jet is under that black cap. need a long skinny flat head screw driver

    XS400E Carbs

http://www.mikesxs.net/products-82.html#products XS Performance Keihin Carb Kit for XS650 i think its a Mikuni BS34 replacment. even comes with pods *just noticed your running a 78. not sure if that is your carb. but mikexs should have all the carb parts you need. there is a shop locally to me that does nothing but rebuilding carbs i would imagine there should be one around you as well.
  8. lol noooooooooooo. im super jealous. I figured out that the angled ones won't fit on a molding I made. I did find a 3 1/2 inch one that I think will fit between the carb and the battery box with no other mod needed.. they were only 5 bucks on ebay so I'm gonna try it. What tuning issues did you run into? I'am under the impression just upgrading the 2 jets one size is basically all you need to do.. probably the carb gasket as well. I figure if it doesn't work out ok I can always go back stock. I actually have a spare carb so I'm not too worried.
  9. lol I was afraid you would say that. I want mine to be aesthetically pleasing too! but I hear ya there is a lot of messing with the carbs needed which I probably will screw up.. kill the bike's current running fine operation... and make 100x more work for me.
  10. Im trying to convert to pods (documenting the process for a future guide to help others) and from what Ive read on here other people with xs400/360+pods have always used the pods on the end of the rubber boots because of the room between the battery box. see picture There is only 3 1/2 inches from the carb to the battery box. I did just now find a 15 degree angled uni pod 4" long / 57mm ID which would be perfect to hook direct to the carbs.. my question is do you think it will fit with the angle.. cause no way straight it would. <insert that's what she said jokes> I also just found out parts and more have yamaha oem replacments for only 14. http://www.partsnmore.com/parts/yamaha/xs400/?filters[fitting]=custom so worst case Im going to scrap the pods+rejet and get those.

damn im scared to go diesel oil. been running Valvoline/1 qt. SAE 20W-50 motorcycle oil in my 80 xs400. you think diesel is the better option or you run it just cause you can get a lot more of it for cheaper.
  17. this guy says a 48mm but it didn't fit for him. if you do figure it out make a guide on how to do it.. would be awesome for us mechanically challenged people
  18. woah woah.. i got the exact same one
  19. you realize you have to rejet your carbs too right? its not as easy as just throwing pod's on to make them look cool. wish I knew the answer but I don't sorry... I'm still trying to make oil stop from leaking
  20. just a heads up I ended up buying a 7" assembly http://cgi.ebay.com/7-MOTORCYCLE-HEADLIGHT-HARLEY-HONDA-YAMAHA-KAWASKI-/230132545131?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3594f7f66b <-- offered 13.01 and it was taken. that one to be exact to replace the stock 6 3/8. I took the the headlight trim ring and took it apart so it was just the outer ring then had to dremel out the little mounting clips that have the nuts to hold the inner piece in. The 7" fits perfect with the customzed ring..then the little spring clips that were used orginally work fine to secure the new bulb to the ring. the only issue is shoving the headlight into the stock headlight housing.. its such a tight fit because its way bigger and deeper then the stock lamp but I got it all together and its super bright and nice. also put in some LED tailights from to offset the power usage. Pretty happy the way it turned out..
  21. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2pcs-1157-13W-High-Power-LED-Red-Stop-Tail-Bulbs-/190443067422?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c574a981e I bought me some too.. I ordered before Ollie could confirm they would work great for us. Glad it all worked out.
