are you charging ok and reg and rectifier within specs? Battery fully charged? have you made sure the earth strap is secure to the engine? my coils checked out ok ohm wise, but heated up so much the wax melted in the HT input (sealed) try a new set of coils (£23 off ebay for pair)
  2. take the Idle adjustment screw out and if it is blunt (ie not pin sharp) the bottom part has snapped off in the carb preventing any mix on idle. ( very common as I've seen loads) if it is sharp, you have a bockage in the pilot system and the carb needs stripping also try balancing the carbs and setting timing and valves correctly as that will be the next easiest
  3. hi, anyone go to the north weald classic bike festival on 2nd sept. Just seen an xs400 turbo by Paul Shivers in CMM page 15 and wanted a bit more info/pictures on it. cheers
  4. yep keep it on run as there is a vacuum tap which prevents fuel flow when engine is off.
  5. probably just a sticky return mech. for future reference you can access easily from the right side cover (after draining oil)
  6. I'd PM mervin, the last 2 stroke I did was 15 years ago. if the laberynth seals are gone you would get white smoke from the exhaust and your gear box oil level dropping.
  7. check fuel flow from tank, crap in bottom or vent blocked check timing first cause that's the easy part. try raising the main needle up 1 notch to see if that helps. ( 2nd easiest) check float levels and use a jet kit and replace the jets and clean out carbs using an ultrasonic bath if you can borrow one. fit an inline fuel filter now before more sh!t gets in there.
  8. lots of times, just do a search on the forum. you have an air leak and inlets replacement is a good starting point. check your pilot screws are only 1.5 turns from the closed position and check the vacumm pipe on the inlet is still on (mine has come off in the past, miles from anywhere. you get that sinking feeling when the bike dies and relief when that all it is!) suggest you check timing and valves costs nothing to do yourself and 2 things less to eliminate YAY 400th post

    xs400 carbs

the exhausts are different on the 650 as they splay out a la triumph. you will need to rejet a 650 carb or you will be overfuelling because of the extra CC's of the 650
  10. run a multimeter on the battery set to dc volts and run the bike. you should be getting 14+ volts if you are charging properly. if not then next part to fail is regulator/rectifier.
  11. what does the spark plug tell you?

    R1

An engineering student was at campus parking an R1 when he was approached by a friend, also an engineering student. The friend said, "Hey, where'd you get the great looking bike?" The first engineer replied, "Well, I was walking across the campus car park the other day. This beautiful woman rode up to me on her R1, ripped off all her clothes, laid down on the ground and said 'Take anything you want!!!'" The second engineer replied, "Good choice. Her clothes probably wouldn't have fit anyway!"
  14. what does it say in the owners handbook re:oil? full synth is chemically made and semi's are cracked mineral oils and are worlds apart and are specific for a particular type of engine. Because of this, early synth oils broke their polymer chains by mixing and caused blockages as the oil changed, not so sure nowerdays. Even synths differ in their make-up and you have to check contents listing. true synths are group 4 oils (fuchs etc) I only know this when I went for oil for my Renault and it was a minefield. I settled on 5w 40 Fuchs supersynth SL for the car. please don't use sick 50 (not a spelling mistake)

  17. Joe wanted to buy a motorbike. He doesn't have much luck until, one day, he comes across an XS400 with a 'for sale' sign on it. The bike seems even better than a new one, although it is 30 years old. It is shiny and in absolute mint condition. He immediately buys it, and asks the seller how he kept it in such great condition for 30 years. "Well, it's quite simple, really," says the seller, "whenever the bike is outside and it's going to rain, rub Vaseline on the chrome. It protects it from the rain." And he hands Joe a jar of Vaseline. That night, his girlfriend, Sandra, invites him over to meet her parents. Naturally, they take the bike there. Just before they enter the house, Sandra stops him and says, "I have to tell you something about my family before we go in. When we eat dinner, we don't talk. In fact, the first person who says anything during dinner has to do the dishes." "No problem," he says. And in they go. Joe is shocked. Right smack in the middle of the living room is a huge stack of dirty dishes. In the kitchen is another huge stack of dishes. Piled up on the stairs, in the corridor, everywhere he looks, dirty dishes. They sit down to dinner and, sure enough, no one says a word. As dinner progresses, Joe decides to take advantage of the situation and leans over and kisses Sandra. No one says a word. So he reaches over and fondles her breasts. Still, nobody says a word. So he stands up, grabs her, rips her clothes off, throws her on the table, and makes love to her right there, in front of her parents. His girlfriend is a little flustered, her dad is obviously livid, and her mum horrified when he sits back down, but no one says a word. He looks at her mum. "She's got a great body," he thinks. So he grabs the mum, bends her over the dinner table, and has his way with her every which way right there on the dinner table. Now his girlfriend is furious and her dad is boiling, but still, total silence. All of a sudden there is a loud clap of thunder and it starts to rain. Joe remembers his bike, so he pulls the jar of Vaseline from his pocket. Suddenly the father backs away from the table and shouts, "All right, that's enough, I'll do the bleeding dishes!"
