Hi, can anyone help, DT was running fine then went on holiday and when i got back i tried to get it going and it wont start. Previously a good starter, now no spark. Have tried a new 'cheap' coil they sold me down the local bike shop for 20 quid which doesn't fit properly and a new spark plug, checked the connections, earth connector wire to the metal frame of the coil was chaffed and rubbing on the frame, but I presume this doesnt matter as its the earth, repaired anyway. Connected a meter set to voltage, to the input and earth and it sends the digits wizzing when i push the kick starter, but don't know what it read! Bit stuck now, electrics not my thing. Anyone know wha…

I have had my 1979 DT250 MX in the garage and I am finally getting round to sorting it out. I cannot find anywhere in the manual where it tells you where to connect the autolube oil output to. I have a photo of my Carb here http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/l503/roffster/Yamaha%20DT%20250%20MX/carb2.jpg But the obvious looking nipple on here is listed as a breather in the manual. Can anyone advise where the oil feed connects please?

hey looking for some idea as to what he cause of the engine problem on my bike is . heres her story i bought her off ebay , stripeed her down like u do , to refurbish her , as i had her sitting about for a few month before i was 16 . ran perfectly afterwards up and down the tracks , when i got her on the road it was winter but i still had 3 onths of bliss . then trouble started. i first had to replace the fuel filter as fuel was leaking from the old one she had another tap put on the petrol tank too , we cleaned the carb after the first time she droppped revs and this seemed to solve the problem however riding her home a month ago in the puring ra…

Hey everyone, just wanted to introduce myself and ask a couple questions. My name's Matt and I have a 1978 DT175E that was passed down to me from my dad. It's my first bike and I'd like to learn how to ride using that bike. The problem is it doesn't run. It hasn't for many years. My dad thinks it needs a headgasket. I checked myself and made sure I was getting air, fuel, and spark (which I do get all 3). So the only thing I can think of is compression. I'm going to order a complete engine gasket set and replace the headgasket, intake and exhaust gaskets. I'll keep the extra gaskets for down the road. Is there a service manual for the DT175E that is available onl…

i have an 02 DT125r (JYADE031) which is absolutely bog standard except i have changed just the end can to an athena end can(rest of the exhaust is standard),it was mentioned to me that i would need to increase the main jet in the carb to compensate for the freer flow that the new end can has given the engine so after reading some of the stuff on this forum and doing some checking on the yamaha spares website, would i be right in thinking that i need to increase the main jet size in my carb from 240 to 260 and do i need to change the pilot jet to something other than 25, the carb that is fitted a flat sided carb. i'm not interested in my dt doing 100mph nor do i want it to…

hello all back again. Airhead has kindly posted me what I hope will sort out the steering bearing issue, so while I've been unable to put the front back together I took the opportunity to put the engine back in, but with mixed success, it fired up after a couple of kicks and I wound the throttle stop until it ticked over nicely but when I pushed the choke in the revs increased then wandered before the engine died, I whipped the plug out and there was a fair amount of oil on it. I have fitted a carb overhaul kit for the right year so Im going to check ive put it all together correctly. Still haven't sorted the auto lube so Im pre mixing at 35 : 1 - is this rig…

My name is Jake and I am new to motorcycles. I own a farm and have worked on many tractors, chainsaws, dump truck, etc. but liquid cooled two strokes are new. Ok, so in laws have a scrap collecting business. Yesterday I was rummaging around and found what is left of a DT 125. I am not exactly sure of the year and info on finding that would be helpful. I got it out of the scrap heap and began looking it over. It is missing the seat, rear fender, and some other odds and ends like blinkers and tail light. Mechanically it seemed intact. I kicked on the kick lever and the engine rotated about 1/2 a revolution and stopped. I removed the spark plug to examine piston a…

Hi everyone, I went for a little ride the the day and was stopping at a set of lights at a junction when suddenly the back tyre just locked up when I was shifting down. I didn't shift down too quickly as it was probably about 10mph coming from second to first and I barely touched my back brake. Anyway being a new rider I stalled it and upon trying to kick it back up it wouldn't start and sounded very strange. Eventually I got it going but the noise coming from the bike was horrific, but I needed to get it back home so I rode on it and about half way the noise stopped. Upon getting it home my dad and I checked it thoroughly and the noise hasn't come back and it ha…

Hello fellow Yamahamers, I have need of your assistance. I am resurrecting a dead dirt bike and need to know all the proper carb settings. I can't get this thing started. It pops and sputters but no joy. The air screw has no retainer spring, should it have one and does its absence affect the setting of said screw? What about the throttle stop setting? I know nothing of the history of this engine because it came via ebay. It took some time to realize that the cylinder does not have the autolube input hole, this cylinder may be from a YZ. The bottom end is from a '76. The reeds seem O.K., it's sparking. The carb seems to be working. Gas leaks out of the overflow pipe…

Hi Everbody... I've been reading occasionally the various threads on this forum for a couple of weeks, but this is my first post, and I thought it was time I said hello .. I've been looking at getting back into Yamaha's 2 strokes , as I used to have a 1983 Yamaha DT 175MX, many.. many.. many moons ago.. Recently felt like reviving my youth by buying another one.. However, when I think back to those days, the bike I really hankered for at the time was the DT400.. I’m now trying to find an original DT400 here in the UK, and as you all know they are hard to come by .. I remembered reading a small article in MCN sometime ago about a company doing restoration…

This bike is 29 years old, I bought it 18 months ago with 2,000km on the clock. It's been running good, the boy has done a further 2,000km on it. Then when on a trip up the highway after about 50km it seized up (while doing about 80 - 90 kmh) So I rebored it and put it back together. I found a mis-fitted gauze in the fuel tap with a build-up of crap behind it. This I summised caused a reduced fuel flow, leaned out hence excessive heat and seizure. I was 100% confident with that theory so sent the boy off to put some miles on it. Next thing, I get a phone call from the roadside, it's seized again - F*%K I said, several times over. He was not experienced enough to…

Hi guys, back again for some advice. Took the bike for it's MoT today, unfortunately it failed. Main reason was because of the horn. It was pouring rain all the way there and the horn refused to give more than a squak, even dried out. Ordered another one from Yambits so should be here tomorrow. Other failure point ws something I mentioned before. When the indicators are on the lights dimm/flicker/flash/"are adversely affected by the operation of another lamp" as the lad put it. Also when the horn button was pushed same thing happened. Could this be a bad earth somewhere? If so, is it just a process of going through all of them or are there any more likely than others? Or …

I was debating whether or not to post this as it is embarrassing, but I thought fuck it. Since getting my bike I have fucked up a few times. I have dropped it twice, luckily no major damage was done. The worst thing I did happened the other day. I called into a Tesco to get a much and when I come out I saw a guy who I hadn't seen for ages. I got talking to him and then he went into Tesco. Anyway I started my bike and set off but, I had only set off with the fucking chain and lock around the back wheel. My heart sank when I had realised what I had done, but my initial thoughts were that no one had seen me because I felt a cunt. I took the chain off and the there was a clic…

Here's the story . Mate likes bikes , has a mint FZR250 , but he's 6'4'' and 15 st. He arrives home (dunno how it made it ) on a badly cared for XTZ750ST which , through many mechanical interventions by me ,and much to my surprise , he hacked around on for the last few years . Anyway , the poor old XTZ recently shit a plank on the motorway . He got it vanned home and it was pronounced dead by yours truly the next day . Nice one ! I thought , no more fixing that horrible fecking thing ! He'll buy himself a more modern/reliable bike and I can relax . I mean everything on the old bike was shagged . But not so fast ! Matey has other ideas ! He likes his old bike an…
