  1. yeah the ring was undone but the seal needed freeing up. I ended up just scraping at the seal and I opened the ring up completely rather than just loosening it like the book said. Finally got the engine out and about to start the strip down of the top end. its an air cooled engine so can only be oil burning. Thanks. Will keep posted on the progress. http://db.tt/BDF2of6y http://db.tt/PiKalxm2 http://db.tt/fQvRCiYd
  2. http://db.tt/dYUWZzz5 that's a picture of the exhaust. I have changed the oil and it didn't change anything. I have emptied the breather tanks which had loads of oil in them so I thought that was the issue but it wasn't. It's definitely a top end issue either valve seals, gasket or piston rings but the issue is removing this exhaust pipe
  3. I kept getting white smoke from my bike. It would start initially ok but as soon as i apply throttle and anytime afterward i would get white smoke. It rode ok but the smoke clouds are a real worry so i have gone about taking the engine out the bike to replace head gaskets and possibly the piston. I have done everything else the manual suggested it might be without needing to take the engine out. Problem is i can't put my stand under the bike as the whole rear end will drop once i take out the bolt connecting the swingarm to the engine. to do this i need to remove the downpipe but it just wont seperate from the silencer. i have had a friend try pulling from the opposite end at it's just jammed in with no give. The seal around it is all crumbly too so i am guessing this has something to do with it. Any suggestions as to what to do? i am going to replace the silencer anyway as it is a rusty piece of crap too. I don't have any tools apart from your average ratchet and spanner kit etc. so no engine harness and no circular saw to get rid of the old silencer as my mate suggested
  4. i have the same thing to do. i got 10W oil and will be using the same amount you stated.
  5. i weigh around 65 KG but often have my uni bag with books etc weighing in a fair bit plus panniers with tool kit and spare shoes to wear around teh library, still will hit over 60 easily on the flat. I do find a lot of extra speed when i tuck being 6ft myself but also how much i tuck too can get that little bit extra out. bear in mind i have the R vs the X which has higher top speed anyway.
  6. i've got up to 74 with a bit of wind but usually hit around 68.
  7. I been riding maybe a month with barely enough oil in my engine to fill a cats bowl... every time i checked the oil there was oil on the dipstick... that had been splashed onto it. Silly me not wiping it off and diping it back in to check the levels properly... running much smoother now it's been topped up!
  8. I tried one of those on at the shop but my masses of hair mean i can't get a good fit with my thin cheeks.. still searching, considering getting the Duchinni one.
  9. I had gone to a friends, took the key out the ignition and put it in my pocket... only i missed my pocket and the key stayed on the floor right next to my bike all night long and all of the next day that i was at uni... Couple days ago i slipped on the ice too, going slightly too quickly most likely but it was my first time on snow and i was growing in confidence as you do! It was OK on the snowy bits but as soon as i hit the compacted snow/ice the front just went completely. New handle bars on it but they are too small by about 5 cm width and again the same in height!
  10. Dropped it, bent my handle bars Got some new ones but they are too small. will be replacing them again with proper motocross bars when i get the funding.
  11. my bike idles around 800-1500 depending on how hot the engine is... 2k sounds high to me. although it is a bitch to start sometimes so i guess it could idle a little higher..
  12. ok thanks, I so far I've just been filling up according to mileage but i am getting a fair bit more out of the bike than what i should so I'd rather the light worked correctly. I will try the multimeter and go from there. Is the float that accessible? i would have thought the tank would be a sealed part really.. which is why i thought a new tank is needed.
  13. I just got the bike about a week now. Already cleaned out Carburettors, tightened chain and going to change brake pads soon. I'm fairly good mechanically, maintained my mountainbike over the years and looking to get stuck into something with a bit more going on. Most problems i have figured out with the bike so far but I just can't understand why my fuel light is not working correctly(electrics...), it's always on, even with a full tank. I haven't got a manual right now but will be looking to invest, could anybody tell me how i could monitor the connecters are working correctly with a multimeter? what kind of readings should i be getting? this way i could figure out what is at fault. Or if anybody has had a similar issue and could offer some advice? don't fancy buying a new tank right now.
  14. Hi, I just recently passed my CBT and got a Yamaha XT 125 R as i'd like to be doing a bit of offroading too. Use the bike to commute 40 mile daily to uni so will be doing lots of maintanence. Studying Automotive enginering currently, looking forward to a career in motorsport. Ben
