  1. ok.. finally getting to it.. drewps i'm looking your way.. starter was filled with oil.. is it supposed to be? i'm guessing no. if its no, thats ok cause i see where it entered. that side of the engine - the oil that came out is just the engine oil right? and the stator is under oil? i'm rebuilding the starter now - and got the gasket and oil - ready to go, but these two things i can't get an answer too.
  2. pulled the starter to rebuild it. long story short. a gear and a chain fell down in the case.. whats the odds of me being able to continue with out taking off the clutch side cover?
  3. yeah my switch on my 81-xs400 doesn't shut off all the time when you push it in....some times it does. but mostly i push it to the opposite direction. and some times left takes two pushes to stay on. I just figure, Its a old switch, i'll deal with it. yeah and that self canceling directional are pretty sweet, i was surprised. i know know how they work, black magic? tip censor?
  4. i painted my engine in the frame. I didn't want to make everything a bunch of different colors, so i figured thats the best way to go. the bottom is a olive drab color and the top is gloss black. and i'm thinking about sanding the edge of the fins for that harley type look.. haven't decided yet tho. and i was kicking my self in the ass for not painting the exshost things there... i notice them when the pipes where going back on.. and i already wrapped them so i said screw it. this is my first motorcycle and i got it for cheap so i'm not going to nuts on it. you like how bent that shifter is? haha it was like that when i bought it.
  5. i painted mine already. came out well. i went two tone. jugs are gloss black. and the lower half is almost a olive drab. looks great. i'll shoot up some pics when i can.
  6. ok. now filled the battery to proper amounts. its holding 12.75- 13 volts. bike at idle - 11.somthing volts hold a rev - climbs to 14 + volts.
  7. i checked the batt. its around 11 volts and has close to no acid in it.
  8. please tell my i have a crap battery.... i bought this thing last month and the guy says he put in a new one. the guy was kinda a dunce... does that sound like a battery issue or am i looking at a crappy time ahead of me?
  9. ha.. ok! thanks for clearing that up.. i wonder where they're putting they're batts... cause one is a 81 xs 400 on there and no batter to be seen.. tricky tricky little bastards!
  10. are those guys just doing away with their batteries? (i'm really new to bikes) so... if you don't electric start you don't need one? wont your headlight dim everytime you hit the brake?
  11. so the inspection nazis are bitchn' that i have some rust on my fork sliders. I can't find new ones. I can't find good used ones. i don't care about the trees. but anyone know anything thats a direct slide in replacement? a little taller is cool.
  12. ahh it turned out ok, i know know why, or how, nor do i want to know.... it just started working.. i started it up on the stand, put it in 1st, gassed it, put in clutch and hit rear break, and it started to work.. any ideas on now to get off those allen screws when they don't wanna turn?
  13. bike worked fine, then i changed the handle bars, in doing so i did break the throttle cable. but anyway now the clutch wont disengage.. and the cable is not broken, and i've playing with adjustment. i cannot get the back tire to spin freely in gear. and in neutral the kick start spins the tire.
