  1. Hi

a mate of mine is finding it difficult to find 18" tryes for his 92 FZR 600. Will the Thundercat back wheel fit?

If not do you know of any other 17" wheels that would fit???

    Cheers

    have you tried bridgestone BT45's?

  2. I have very roughly edited the colours on my wheels to try and help me decide what to go for???

It is difficult because the whole bike is Black!

    Your opinions please!!!

    [

not many colour accents, so i would go for silver unless you added more colour elsewhere and matched that in with the scheme. :)

  3. Can anyone tell me if it's possible - easily - to tune my Yamaha SR 125? I'm fairly clued up as to the mechanics of engines etc, but know nothing about tuning them. Is it possible to tune this engine? It's a 1996 model, and I'd really just like it to have a little more ooomph going up hills.

    Cheers,

    Ben

I seem to remember this was discussed before in this forum. The SR was designed to have 12hp and therefore isn't economically tunable. Better to get a 2 stroke (pre '79 were unrestricted, i had a kh125)and tune them if you're after speed.

  4. Hi all,

just had the rocker cover off my 88 xj600, cos it wont start. No valve clearances at all (that'll do it every time). Anyone any idea how they could have got to be this bad?

What I really need are the details of the valve clearances and cam chain timings and and any other details or advice thats going to help me sort this out over the weekend. thanks in advance,

    Mike

clearances close up as the valves recess into the head(wear). from what i belive the xj have bucket and shim,s which requires special tool to insert the shims and a micrometer to measure the shims.

Personally i would let a bike shop do it.

  5. I'm going to restore my rusting kickstarter (see picture below). I know how to kill the rust and prep it for painting, but I'm not sure if the original finish is chrome, or just a chrome paint. I was hoping one of you could help me out with some of your experience.

    KickStarter.JPG

Also, if you have any suggestions on how to restore it...I'm all ears. ;)

    Thanks,

    BrewTrooper (a.k.a. Ken)

I chromed mine, don't try to get imperfections out let the chromers do it, as if the finish is not right they could blame you!

    here's mine

  6. Just got a 1979 XS400F and I am trying to do some general maintenance. I changed the oil, oil filter, and plugs and tightened every nut and bolt I could find. Now for my questions about lubing:

What do I need to lube?

How do you lube it? - Specifically, the cables.

How often should I lube it?

The bike seems to be running well so I don't really want to mess with it too much, but are there any other general maintenace procedures that I should look into? Thanks.

chain weekly and after rain use

    cables annually/3000miles

i spray ACF (wd40 but better) on plastics (except side panels, rear seat and tank) carb bodies and any exposed alloy

    hinges etc annually

steering bearings depends on tapered or original, usually 6000 miles

  7. hey im new here and im getting my first bike my unkle bought it brand new. he had an accident were only the rear rim was bent so i have 2 find a exact match to the front or buy new rims and it needs tires and battery and a paintjob but other than that its ok

but i think its a 81 or 83 yamaha 400 special 2 is it rare or classic or just a piece of crap.

ill post some pics within a few days but friday at the latest

depends on your point of view, they are classics as in over 20yrs old, but how many do you see over there? if you can't remember seeing one then there's some kudos in owning one in your part of the world!

mine always attracts attention where ever i park up. B)

  8. I do not reccommend hammerite as a final coat it goes hard and chips off after a few weeks, if you use hammerite stone chip over it to protect the stuff but also i remember getting anyother paint to stick to hammetite is a pig of a job, honestly i used to think it was marvellous stuff but will not touch it any more now it is too hard and chips off too easily, plastikote or pj1 is far better

    merv

I'll check mine in the winter strip down

  9. I'm cleaning up my 1981 XS400's front fender and I was looking for suggestions on how to treat the underside which has a nice layer of rust. (See photos via URL/link below):

    Fender Photos

As you can see from the photos, the underside has a nice layer of rust that has formed. How would you recommend going about removing the rust and then treating/painting it after I do?

I plan on cleaning up the chrome with some stell wool. It has some pitting, but otherwise is in good shape considering... If anyone has other recommendations I'm all ears.

    Thanks!!!!

    BrewTrooper (a.k.a. Ken)

I used silver hammerite on mine as it has rust inhibitors, must get most of the surface rust off though!!

  10. What the heck is the "heritage special"? How does it differ from the XS400, the XS400 SE, or the XS400 Special? I'm looking at a 1982, and I'm wondering what its specs are (is it DOHC? dual front discs?).

    Thanks,

    Eric

its sohc, I've seen single disk and tls setups.

I think they had pull back bars and other minor cosmetic differences.

Bit of Yamarketing if you ask me!! ;)

  11. ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW OF MY OLD YAMMIE SPEC, WITH MURAL OF TWO SNOW TIGERS AND A BIG BUSTED WARRIOR WOMAN ON THE TANK SOLD IT YEARS AGO TOTALLY REGRET IT NOW, THE METAL SIDE PANELS WERE MURALLED TOO, THE BIKE HAD A HANDLE BAR CUSTOM CLAMP FITTED WITH KEY OF HOPE ENGRAVED ON IT, SOLD TO A GUY IN SCOTLAND NEAR GLASGOW.

  12. Seams like I've got me a nice piece of work. Or should I forget about it and enjoy the 27 HP... :( Anyway, drewpy, You've been most helpful... Which translated german site are you talking about...if it's not a secret...

you could search the uk/ebay for parts or put a wanted ad in the forum!

the german site is google translated and it works out at pidgen english but you get the gist of whats going on.

    http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=e...hl%3Den%26lr%3D

I also have the german ebay setup to email me for xs parts as they are avid xs400 fans and parts are cheaper there.

  13. first of all let me say hi to all you folks out there with yam's.

i'm just after a bit of knowledge on the old DOHC 750 shaftie, something i've dreamed of owning since i first saw them in 1977, and now own after my very first winning bid on ebay ( and probably the last if my wife has any say on the matter )

anyway to the question do these things run ok on unleaded fuel? or will i need to introduce some sort of additive into the tank

the bike in question is a 1978 vintage XS 750E

and i know bad things will happen to me now i've got it, and most of the gearbox is made out of cheese, and the electrics were made before they invented copper wire, and the brakes only work when the temperature is above 15 degrees and not raining ....... but oh that sound that eminates from the exhaust turns my legs to jelly probably not a good thing being as the thing weighs more than 500 pounds... think that goes back to the first comment i made.

but anyway enough of my waffle hope some1 out there can help me and if you can thanks very much, appreciate it

no problem running on unleaded as Yamaha designed for the american market which introduced unleaded circa 1970.

  14. I just hope that the camshafts are not different...inlets and jetting shouldn't be a problem...thnx, Drewpy.

had a look at a translated german site and it looks like you have to change the camshafts, intakes and CDI box.

  15. Hallo everybody. I'm new here, and I would appreciate some help. I have recently bought an XS 400 DOHC. As it was made for German market, it is reduced to 27 HP. Normally, this bike has 38 or 44 HP. Can someone tell me how was it reduced and how can I "open" it?

Probably someone could know more on German forums (because they had a lot of bikes reduced to 27 HP), unfortunately, I don't speak German. :(

Thanks in advance, greetings from Croatia.

on the sohc bikes the camshaft is different and they had extra fillet restricting the carb inlets which can be cut away. the carb jetting needs to be done after the mods to compensate for the extra air flow.

possibly the same goes for your dohc model (45hp in uk)

  16. Hi everyone.

Can u believe it, some one dumped a yamaha engine and exhaust on my front yard. Scince all the gears and clutch seems to work, im keen to re-build it and use it on an ag-bike.

Only problem is I have no idea what engine it is. I was wondering if the engine can be identified by engine number, or by sight.

It looks to be a 2 stroke but had a 4 stroke exhaust (no power pipe)

    Engine number 576-100143

    can any 1 help me?

    according to this site

    http://auction.netbikes.com.au/vjmw.php?pa...p2axbbj27v1gba2

    its a DT175C

  17. Drewpy,

Awesome job! B) I have an XS400/H and that I'm in the process of restoring. I had a couple of questions...

Did you paint the engine to get it looking that new?

Did you totally strip this down to restore it? I'm assuming you did to get it looking that nice.

What parts did you have to replace that you couldn't restore?

    Thanks,

    BrewTrooper

I totally stripped the engine and frame.

Used PJ1 yamaha silver paint on the engine cases, which were stripped to bare metal, then baked in the oven for an hour after painting.

I replaced all bearings and seals and a few electrical items, the tank i got new from ebay and had it laquerd. the frame was powder coated and all the chrome items were redone using parts from ebay as chrome and english winters don't mix.

the wheels were painted with PJ1 satin black as were the switchgear and other black items.

It took 2 years to do but i did most of it myself buying tools as i went along.

If you have any specific things you want to know just PM me and I'll be glad to help. I took pictures as i did the restoration.

  18. Hi I Have A 1981 XS400SE is it possible to convert the headlight To the more powerfull H4 headlight

I belive a honda superdream 250N lamp fits, never tried it myself though and i would consider reducing the rear lamps to 8 watts or so to compensate for the voltage drain or you may find that the charging system can't cope. (halogen 60/55 W) you may need to fit the H4 connector as well.

if you want to have the proper reflector then try

http://www.pgmyamaha.com/MOCOMMAINLIST%201.xls they have a kit for the RD's which should fit the XS, I would phone first as they are very helpful.

I bought a gear change shaft marked for a rd400 and it fitted my XS (you can't get these from yam any more)

  19. The carbs on my xs 850 have jets numbered 1.22. the book recommends 1.45. Do you think changing to the big size will help top end power.

I'd book 10 mins on a dyno. that will give you your settings.

  20. SR125 intermittent (Electric) starting problems.

Sometimes it starts fine, then the next minute it wont start and wont even bump. Which means I cant go very far, cos I am scared of it conking out on me.

Given contacts etc.... and good clean and spray.

Any ideas, cos its driving me mental and I need the bike to practise ready for my test, which is real soon.

is it just electric starting on the button or kick/bump starting?

If its generaly a bad starter, have you checked the ususal suspects?

    spark plug

fuel - blocked fuel delivery. do you have an inline fuel filter, i always use one as after 1300 miles i can see rust flecks from the petol pump tankscaught in the filter!

    charged battery?

does the bike smoke when it does start, as this could mean worn valve guides thus letting oil seep into the cyl head causing spark plug to foul.
