  1. ive got an xs500 needing some tender loving care, runs, just needs tidying

Watch those balancer chains and tensioners, and keep the oil clean as the top end gets starved of oil easily

  2. I need a decent inline fuel filter. I stripped the carbs, and the float bowls were full of muck. When I had them apart before I had them ultrasonically cleaned. I guess the crap is coming from the tank.

I already have a filter in the line, but it obviously isn't doing its job.

Any suggestions for an effective one?

I just used a small inline paper filter.

Just because they are ultrasonically cleaned, doeasn't mean all the crud is out. Some swear by using a carb additive in the petrol tank and that clears out the gunk

  3. tried it wasn't that I've done the timing three times how bout this the timing plate mark has more than one line with the T beside them to the right exactly what line is the mark and which stroke is tdc on

on my xs400 the timing marks are called RF for right LF for left. The LT/RT etc is for the valve timing.

    just a thought

  4. Having done the valve clearances (and fitted new plugs), I tried to fire it up...

Nothing at all, not even trying to fire. Then I noticed that whilst I had the throttle cable off, it had become dislodged at the twistgrip end and the throttle wasn't fully closing. There was a gap of about 1/4" at the idle adjuster screw.

Fixed that and it fired, but still only on the left cylinder. Then it died.

It would only start with full choke and absolutely no throttle. And only on one cylinder. Trying to open the throttle kills it instantly, and it will just about keep going after about the fourth attempt. Then, slowly, the throttle can be opened and the speed will increase. Eventually the right hand cylinder kicks in and it will warm up and settle nicely.

It doesn't rev well though, spluttering before revving if the throttle is opened quickly.

    I'm suspecting the carbs...

yep, pilot jets blocked ( a recurring theme in xs400 threads)

  5. Swapped out the coils and can get spark from previously dead plug. So far I have traced it to a two prong connector for red and white wires(sorry I don't have a wiring diagram yet) it connects both red and white wires to a single red and wire in the harness. One side works with both coils the other doesn't. I am confused one connector(brass) that connects both wires but one side does not conduct current!!

redwhite is the + feed from ignition swtch and connects to both coils. Grey and orange go to the conacts via condensor.

the connector must be faulty or just needs some contact cleaner as they can get verdigri and prevent contact.

  6. Can anyone run down the differences between a just old plain 77 - 84' 400cc Bike. Then the 400 special, and then the special II, and then the heritage etc.

    I have a 81 400 Special II -- I've been wondering what's so special about a Special??

    Thanks Bob

as from an xs400D, custom models have 16" rear wheels, high rise bars, different frames to accomodate a different seat. engines are the same maybe minor diferences in '80 with rubber mounted engine and oil sight glass.

  7. went over the carbs again, now there is no spark from the left plug there is spark to the right, how do I check the coil for viability? the wiring and connections do not appear corroded

coil primary resistance = 4 ohms (small wire and ht lead)

secondary resistance 9500 ohms (small wire to other small wire)

check ht cap not cracked and has continuity from lead

  8. Hello, new to the forum but not new to motorcycles. I currently have a Seca 750 that is running well. I just bought a

1978 xs400E that has been off the road for at least 7 years. I got it started after a quick and dirty carb clean, unstuck the floats and slides. After it was running I noticed the right muffler(as I am sitting on the bike) was much hotter than the left.

Bike runs rough but I expected that. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

pilot jet blocked ,also check twin contacts (if fitted) to check timing/gap

  9. hi guys, my yamaha sr125 is running hot and backfiring. if i carry on riding, it cuts out and wont restart again for a while.

1t's a V reg and has only done 5000 miles.

any help would be much appreciated

    thanks

either running very weak (check sparkplugs) or your ignition has somehow retarded.

don't keep running it like that as you are getting partial seizures ( cutting out), does it run when cooled?

  10. Hi,

Need a little (more) help with my TR1, the piston rings are firmly welded into the pistons, and pistons in a poor state.

Does anyone know where i can buy replacement pistons and rings? will xv1000 pistons fit, mine are 95.0 mm according to the haynes manual

Thanks for any help you can give me

    Andy

    try asking here http://www.tr1.de/

  11. Drewpy,

Hey thanks a lot I really appreceate it. Mine have an inside diameter of about 1 and 1/4 inches and the bolt holes are about 2 and 5/8 inches from center to center

I tried high temp rtv to repair them. and it helped a lot the bike idles a lot more stabely (SP?), but it still reves a little when I spray starter fluid. Not as much, but my problem is similar to the other guys. one minute I have my idle adjusted for around 1700 rpms and the next it is screaming along at 4000 rpms and I can't get it to back off. It's almost like the carb has no off idle to 4000 rpm capacity. It's either doing one or the other. Other than this it seems to run great.

As for history the bike has sat for 9 yrs and the one carb was totally gumed up, I couldn't move the cv piston or rotate the butterfly. I freed those two things up and they seem to be acting normally, but I have no idea about other aspects of the carbs. What does a carb rebuild cost?

The rubber boot on the other carb is definately cracked all the way through, the rtv helped, but it started bubbling once the motor heated up.

Well any way I appreceate any help or pointers

    jason

I get the same measurments on mine and you should have 34mm carbs which are the same as the 400 so your good to go.

A rebuild cost; get a keyster kit from ebay (canadian company) and send the lot off to a ultrasonic cleaner who does carbs (150$ ish)

  12. I just obtained a 77 xs360 2d but the intake carb holders/boots are cracked and need replacement. I've called around to the usual sources and they are discontinued and unavailable.

So does anyone know of other nos sources?

or is there a set of boots from another bike that will work? ie the xs400

or worst case has anyone ever repair a cracked set? I'm thinking high temp rtv

    thanks for the help,

    Jason

take measurements and I'll check my 400 ones

  13. I just purchased an 1977 xs400 for $75. Over all it is in good shape, except the carbs. The last time it was on the road was in 2003. The owner pulled off the carbs and put them on the shelf until now. The carbs are frozen, I cant get the butterfly valves lose. I have been looking for a new set of carbs, but all I can find are carbs for the xs650's. Does any one know if these will work on a 400? Also I would like if possible to switch from CV carbs to slide carbs. Does anyone know if the RD carbs will fit?

any 34mm carbs should fit except 2 stroke ones (i think they are designed different due to the 2 stroke oil, but don't quote me on this)

need to put on a dyno afterwards to get the fueling curve right

  14. Evening, I have recently bought a new project what i think is a 1980 XS400SE the frame No starts "4G5". I am after some general info on this model. If somebody could point me in the right direction to any of the following it would be appriciated. Model Info, Workshop Manual, BEst place for Spares, etc

The bike itself i have bought has a few bits and pieces missing the side panels, petrol tank and seat. The good part is that engine runs sweet and electrics seem to be fine.

I am in 2 minds as to what to do with the bike, put it back to standard or get it on the road and use it.

Any help on the above would be appriciated

    Cheers Chris

    Chris,

do a search on the forum as there's loads of stuff here.

pm me if you are still wanting!

  15. can anybody help me to find a nos rear mudguard for my 1979 xs400d

any pointers or web addreses would be most welcome.

Drewpy has inspired me to get mine out of the garage where it has been laid up for 11years.

thanks to all in advance, will post new as project hopefully takes off.

ho ho ho !if you ever find one NOS good luck!!

rare as rocking horse do do's

  16. I just found an old Yamaha (I think its an xs650) that I salvaged the spoke wheels off of for my SR500. The thing that is throwing me off on wondering if its an XS650 is that the right front caliper is mounted to the front of the fork. Heres the serial number:

    447-111670

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Aaron

the engine number indicates an xs650b '74 to 1975 but these had calipers behind the fork leg.

The earlier 1972 XS2 had their caliper fitted at the front on the right side (viewed sitting on the bike) a swapped front end due to a collision could have happened in the past.

  17. when i start my bike (77 xs360)

i dont usually have my choke on all the way

if i do, it take it to about under half as soon as i get the bike started

as the bike warms up, the idle may rise slightly

but as soon as the bike is warmed up and i take to choke off all the way

the idle slowly rises to about the 3k range

    any ideas?

    thanks for your time

    and thank you drewpy

    for your past help

and ill thank you ahead of time

and your help on this matter

You're running too lean, screw in the air screws on the front of the carbs by equal amounts. If that doesn't help you need to check your connections from carb to cyl head and maybe look at buying new carb inlet rubbers as they crack with age and petrol (gas)

  18. I have a xs 400 E 1978. Whether the carburettor from 1981 XS 400 Special II will fit my bike? Anybody has any advise?

should do, both are 34mm mikuni's

  19. So, I have this old XS400 DOHC, which has been idle for a few years. I've fettled it to a point, and it's on the road, but not as good as it could be.

    Pics here

During the fettling, I had the carbs off and had them ultrasonically cleaned.

Firstly, starting is a pain. It tends to fire up instantly, then die after about two seconds. After that it takes a lot of cranking, it will catch, but I can't get it to stay running. Any throttle action and it just dies. Mostly, it's one cylinder doing all the work, and this post caught my eye. I would like to check the valve clearances and ignition timing but I have no data to work from.

Also, I should replace the spark plugs, but rather than assume it has the right ones fitted, I would like to know what they ought to be.

The speedo reads really slow. Following a friend at 30,40,50,60 on his, mine reads 20,25,30,40. The trip counter seems to be reading low too, suggesting the problem lies with the speedo drive rather than the speedo itself. In 6th gear, at 6000rpm, the speedo reads 65mph, but it feels much faster.

The tacho is very sluggish. At standstill I can rev it up to what sounds painful, and back again and the needle only reaches 2000. Holding it at 4000 then killing the engine, it takes 4 seconds to drop. On the road, up through the gears and it hardly moves. As if it's full of oil or something.

What tyre pressures should I use? Dunlop Arrowmax, 100/90x18 and 120/90x18

Does anyone produce a manual for this thing?

    Edit:

Any idea if this will be any good? At £17 it's a tad expensive, and at 20 pages it isn't going to be a workshop manual either.

    in usa = 1983 Yamaha XS400K

found this on motogrid for you

    http://www.motogrid.com/pages/parts/viewby...d/2/yamaha.aspx

enter the above date etc and the service data there as well as part numbers. it is also known as 12n model which was very popular in Germany, which is where you will see most parts on ebay.

    http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=e...hl%3Den%26lr%3D

uses google translator, you can pick up what they are on about (usually) unless you speak german and then you're quids in :o)

  20. im having gear change problems on my yamaha xj600n div.. clunking when i change up gear. i removed clutch cover to find white sluge inside the cover and large water droplets as well, what the hell is going on here. its air / oil cooled does not smell of fuel definately water

if you do short journeys then the engine oil will not warm up properly and the condensation does not evaporate.

I'd recommend changing the oil, warm the engine up, and give it an italian service every now and then!

  21. Thanks for your help. I keep getting told that XS650 wheels will bolt right on in the front and rears will work with a little help. My local junkyard has a set on a bike there. Spokes are dusted but can get new spokes front and rear for about $50 so I think I will pick them up. Gonna tear em apart and try to polish them up. Not sure what I'm getting myself into but I'm sure it will go well with some beers!

    Thanks again for your help!

just keep your eye on the disk offset, and be prepared to shim. xs605's had 2 different brake systems from earlier models to later.

  22. Hi I'm a new member with a request.

I've a 400 Special II that has a model number I cann't find on the web

the bike was made 12 /80 Does that mean a model year of 80 or 81 ??

    The VIN is JYA4R400 BAOD6740

it has alloy wheels Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Thanks BobC

    never heard of that VIN

    all model codes are here

    http://www.cmsnl.com/faq.php?fq_catid=15

If you are sure thae bike was made 12/80 then the model year is 1980

  23. So you think if I can find some xs400 hubs I can lace up some wheels for my SR? How much work do you think it would take to get the hubs to fit? Thanks.

If you want i'll measure mine with the spacers and then if you measure inside your forks you will get a clearer idea!
