Further to my first message. Can anyone tell me which oil I need to buy and how much? Yes I know I could just go to a bike shop, but I'd like an independant opinion.
I use a semi-synth 4T oil and change every 3000 miles with a genuine yam oil filter.

yes, i've checked and rechecked the LT and RT marks several times, both valves closed, etc.
I looked at my Clymer manual and it says that the cam chain is automatically adjusted and no adjustment is required. Is it something that can be checked and adjusted anyway?
If the chain and/or chain guides wear the auto tensioner would be out as far as it goes thus its possible that the chain is loose.
I would just take off the cam cover and have a look and check the timing marks align up with the LT/RT and you can see what's going on with the valvalves.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me why my rear brakes are jamming up. The brakes work fine for several presses, but they slowly jam against the disc. The pedal travel is reduced and the pads seem to stay closed against the disc, not returning to there proper position. Which is causing the disc to overheat. Is it the master cylinder at fault or the rear brake calipar. Here in Australia, xs750 parts are around, but are extremly dear to buy.
If I open the bleed nipple, the brakes return to normal, but slowly jam up again.
Will putting a kit in either stop the problem. Would anyone know which is causing the problem - Master cylinder or the brake calipar.
I would be most gratefull for any help.
John

sounds like your splurge hole is blocked in your master cylinder

so i'm adjusting the valves on my 78 xs400 and the right side comes out just fine. the left side, when i adjust to the correct gap at TDC, if i move it slightly off of TDC the gap widens to probably almost 1/8" (3mm) and the rocker arm kind of flops loosely. if i set it to it's widest point and gap it there, of course at TDC it leaves no gap at all. Also if i gap it at TDC and run it it knocks pretty badly.
is this maybe a problem with the rocker arm needing adjusted? will it hurt anything to run it as is? this sounds like it could be more than i want to really get into, but the dealer here only seems to like to work on new bikes.
thanks for the help
are you using the timing marks on the rotor for tdc? it should read LT (left) RT (right) with BOTH valves closed (that's inlet and exhaust) on the same side and compression is felt with your thumb over the spark plug hole. Then adjustment is made on that side
If its not that, I wonder if your cam chain is loose and not adjusted out enough and then the slack is taken up via the crank turning.
I would take off the cam cover (use a manual for sequence) and then you can check cam chain, mechanical adjuster and the rubber blades that go in front and back of the cam chain tunnel. While your at it you can easily check the rockers and camshaft lobes for wear.

I have a 2000 V Star 1100 Classic. Just recently the regulator/rectifier overheated and melted part of the connector/plug in on the bike wiring. Does anyone knoe where I can find another connector/plug? It also metled the plastic where the regulator/rectifier is mounted. Any suggestions on relocation, mounting alternatives, etc?
Thanks

anyone have any suggestions?....took the ignition appart and didnt notice anything wrong but will replace it while im at it because its kind of finnicky and the key likes to stick. I took off some more stuff and looked back over the harness again and dont see anything that looks like it could have rubbed through...anyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyone help?
I'd disconnect each electrical item first then reconnect bit by bit and see if it blows. when it does, that is your problem

how do you think i found this forum and if you can post me a link to a xs 360 carb rebuild kit i will give you 20 bucks. Believe me i wouldnt have made this post without checking numerous other options before hand.
One of the main carb kits available is the kester carb kit which im sure are the canadian ones but they dont have one for the 360.
It would help to say that you've tried all the usual options, then we don't have to make assumptions.
they are the same carb type ie mikuni 34 mm so should fit yours. For a few dollars its worth a go.

hello boys new to the forums but hoping i can get some answers here. I have been looking for a carb rebuild kit for this bike for about a month now and cant seem to find one. I wanted to install new needle valves but cant find them anywhere. Found some for the 650 that look almost identical but am not sure they would work. Were these cv carbs used on a lot of the xs bikes through the 70 and if so are some of the internals the same with the exception of the jets of course. Also how hard would it be to install the starter motor since this model didnt come with one?
i rebuilt the whole thing and it is running but off the line it is a bit rough. idles fine and once on the gas its fine but for that second or two while taking off it seems a bit rough. Any tips appreciated will post pics in a day or two. I turned it into a cafe racer so its looks pretty nice.
there's a company on ebay that sells carb kits and they are based in Canada.
first do a search as I have posted web based suppliers before and can't be arsed typing them out again!!

Thanks for the quick reply, it was ont of the things I was thinking of checking, but don't know how to check. What would be the best way of doing this?
you need to get a manual. It will pay for itself in no time

Just posted this and realised I forgot to ask. Would poor valve clearance cause the acceleration to be affected? Likewise the timing chain?
sounds like pre-ignition. have you checked your ignition timings?

The 78 is running great for the time. The problem we are having is the rear brake master cylinder is showing signs of old age. We are looking for the whole master cylinder not a rebuild kit. The bike is a 1978 yamaha XS750 special. If anyone knows where we can find a new master cylinder we would appreciate it.

Hey Guys, I'm resotoring a 1980 XS850 Midnight Special. However, I'm having problems finding spare parts in the UK (it's an american import). Are there any well known contact in the UK for import parts or is my only hope using a worldwide search on eBay?
Cheers
Mike
have you tried
www.cmsnl.com based in holland
www.motogrid.com american
www.yamahatopdog.com american
www.bikebandit .com american
www.nwvintagecycleparts.com/
Its really no big deal getting stuff from usa especially when the pound is so strong at the moment. I've had to use these guy's for my xs400 resto.

good to hear you got it sorted, jobs like that drive me mad with fustration!!

Thanks for the reply drewpy, This is the XS3602D so I suppose it is standard frame. I still haven't found out what the 2D signifies. Probably an inter year change or some sort. My manual is on its way so maybe I'll find out when it arrives.
This is my first motorcycle. I have a 125cc scoot that I use around town..
To quote Shakespere..... 2D or not 2D that is the question....
I forget which way round, but one model had drum brakes and no starter motor the other disk front and electric start

check out spark plugs to see if they are rich, I doubt they are.
I have a feeling that you have some crud in your carbs especially the pilot jets as they give the rpm idle you describe.
The only fix is to strip and ultrasonic clean the carbs and fit new jets whilst your at it. get the keyster kits from ebay
