  1. After getting the bike to start (electric start) and driving it for a while. I shut the engine off and tried to kickstart it. Started right up like there was nothing wrong with it. So I dont know what happened. But I'm good to go. Thanks.

probably just a sticky return mech. for future reference you can access easily from the right side cover (after draining oil)

  2. well, fuel flow from tank is good, and i have a new in-line fuel filter already in place.

you said timing is easy to check, can you talk me through this procedure??? i completely re-built this bike, but took it to the local corner shop to have the points put in and timed. (someone told me it was complicated)

someone else told me that if the crankshaft seals were bad, it would run very poorly also. i never got into the bottom end of this engine. could this be a possibility?

i have played with each and every setting on the carb rod. seemed to make very little difference. thanks everyone for responses.......rick

I'd PM mervin, the last 2 stroke I did was 15 years ago. if the laberynth seals are gone you would get white smoke from the exhaust and your gear box oil level dropping.

  3. i would say the spark plug is saying....."too lean you idiot" LOL

but does that mean timing, fuel, what? thanks, rick

check fuel flow from tank, crap in bottom or vent blocked

check timing first cause that's the easy part. try raising the main needle up 1 notch to see if that helps. ( 2nd easiest)

check float levels and use a jet kit and replace the jets and clean out carbs using an ultrasonic bath if you can borrow one.

fit an inline fuel filter now before more sh!t gets in there.

  4. I can start the bike without a problem.

The thing of it is, the throttle sometimes has no effect.

Sometimes the RPMs go up and some times they don't move at all.

I noticed the right side is running leaner that the left just by how fast it heats up. The Carburetor boots are cracked and I’ve ordered new ones. The slides and cable move. But with no effect on RPMS.

It seems to idle fine. So I’m thinking carburetor rebuilds and new carburetor boots should remedy the situation.

Anyone else run into this before?

lots of times, just do a search on the forum.

you have an air leak and inlets replacement is a good starting point. check your pilot screws are only 1.5 turns from the closed position and check the vacumm pipe on the inlet is still on (mine has come off in the past, miles from anywhere. you get that sinking feeling when the bike dies and relief when that all it is!)

suggest you check timing and valves costs nothing to do yourself and 2 things less to eliminate

  5. what about the spacing for the inlets?

i've heard the exhuast between the two is interchangable as well.

    can anyone confirm that?

the exhausts are different on the 650 as they splay out a la triumph.

you will need to rejet a 650 carb or you will be overfuelling because of the extra CC's of the 650

  6. Hi all, i have a Yamaha Neo's 100cc Scooter. my indicators only work when my headlights are off which is a problem as i do alot of riding at night. the bike was fitted with a brand new battery in may, am i right in thinking that i need a new alternator?

    Thanks in advance

run a multimeter on the battery set to dc volts and run the bike. you should be getting 14+ volts if you are charging properly. if not then next part to fail is regulator/rectifier.

  7. hey everyone, i just found this site! i have several early 70's enduros. i just finished a total restoration on a 72' dt 250. but i can't get the dang thing to run for crap. new top end, new clutch, new points, and set timing. rebuilt carb, good clean fuel source.........but it won't hardly get outta its own way. starts and idles nicely, but under a load it craps out, no power, and misses when gaining rpm's. any ideas? could the original exhaust pipe be plugged? could the timing be off even though it starts and idles nicely? after it warms up, it starts pinging real loud and seems to get hot pretty quickly.....anyway, i'm just frustrated, the bike is beautiful, but not much fun to ride. any help would be appreciated. thanks, rick

what does the spark plug tell you?

  8. "jeez mate i bet u bath in the stuff"i work with turbochargers with tollerances in there microns but you know your onions(or oil) or did you just read what it said on the label, cheers

its when i was looking for oil for the car, it was a blink'in minefield. I had to gen up on it so I knew what I was buying!

  9. An engineering student was at campus parking an R1 when he was approached by a friend, also an engineering student. The friend said, "Hey, where'd you get the great looking bike?"

The first engineer replied, "Well, I was walking across the campus car park the other day. This beautiful woman rode up to me on her R1, ripped off all her clothes, laid down on the ground and said 'Take anything you want!!!'"

The second engineer replied, "Good choice. Her clothes probably wouldn't have fit anyway!"

  10. The pro:s n cons of semi/full synthetic oil, can they be slightly mixed up??(if out of one can you top up with the other)

and whats the pro;s with slick 50, can it be mixed with both oils in a bike with a wet clutch, anybody know :unsure:

what does it say in the owners handbook re:oil? full synth is chemically made and semi's are cracked mineral oils and are worlds apart and are specific for a particular type of engine. Because of this, early synth oils broke their polymer chains by mixing and caused blockages as the oil changed, not so sure nowerdays.

Even synths differ in their make-up and you have to check contents listing. true synths are group 4 oils (fuchs etc) I only know this when I went for oil for my Renault and it was a minefield. I settled on 5w 40 Fuchs supersynth SL for the car.

please don't use sick 50 (not a spelling mistake)

  11. Joe wanted to buy a motorbike. He doesn't have much luck until, one day, he comes across an XS400 with a 'for sale' sign on it.

The bike seems even better than a new one, although it is 30 years old. It is shiny and in absolute mint condition.

He immediately buys it, and asks the seller how he kept it in such great condition for 30 years.

"Well, it's quite simple, really," says the seller, "whenever the bike is outside and it's going to rain, rub Vaseline on the chrome. It protects it from the rain." And he hands Joe a jar of Vaseline.

That night, his girlfriend, Sandra, invites him over to meet her parents. Naturally, they take the bike there. Just before they enter the house, Sandra stops him and says, "I have to tell you something about my family before we go in. When we eat dinner, we don't talk. In fact, the first person who says anything during dinner has to do the dishes."

"No problem," he says. And in they go.

Joe is shocked. Right smack in the middle of the living room is a huge stack of dirty dishes. In the kitchen is another huge stack of dishes. Piled up on the stairs, in the corridor, everywhere he looks, dirty dishes.

They sit down to dinner and, sure enough, no one says a word.

As dinner progresses, Joe decides to take advantage of the situation and leans over and kisses Sandra.

    No one says a word.

So he reaches over and fondles her breasts.

    Still, nobody says a word.

So he stands up, grabs her, rips her clothes off, throws her on the table, and makes love to her right there, in front of her parents.

His girlfriend is a little flustered, her dad is obviously livid, and her mum horrified when he sits back down, but no one says a word.

He looks at her mum. "She's got a great body," he thinks. So he grabs the mum, bends her over the dinner table, and has his way with her every which way right there on the dinner table. Now his girlfriend is furious and her dad is boiling, but still, total silence.

All of a sudden there is a loud clap of thunder and it starts to rain.

Joe remembers his bike, so he pulls the jar of Vaseline from his pocket. Suddenly the father backs away from the table and shouts, "All right, that's enough, I'll do the bleeding dishes!"

  12. Hello All,

I am a brand new member, who just put a deposit down on a 1976 Yamaha XS360. I had been looking at new V-Star 650's, but I decided to go with this first as the insurance is $750 less for the first year, and if I drop her I am not going to break into uncontrolled sobs. I am purchasing the bike from a reputable, established dealer and it comes with a safety certificate. The purchase price is $1000.00 Canadian. Straight away I am looking for an owners manuel and a windshield. I welcome any comments, congratulations or otherwise.

    Mike

    Hi and welcome,

the only manuel's i know of are in spain :D

You can try hayes manual as they have all the same bikes covered in the series. (ie 250, 360, 400cc's)

  13. ive just brought a fzr250r and the tank has got crap on the inside of it i was wondering if there was ant way of getting it out without cutting the tank in half :D

an old chain and some diesel.

if you can handle it, acid.

  14. any help gladly accepted

My prayers are with you at this difficult time.

try to look back at the happy times together and try and talk to people in the same situation.

The Samaritons are only a phone call away!!

  15. <_< Hi all,

Have had a problem getting my new project to fire on both cylinders. Starts reasonably easy (easy if warm) using kickstart, but starter motor turns slowly even with reasonable battery charge. Fuel system seems fine, it quickly starts spitting from cold pipe. Have changed plugs, switched leads and replaced coil to suspect side with no change. I've got a multimeter (not too sure on exactly how to test condenser or any other potential causes), the probem seems electrical? but any tips would be most appreciated! Check her out in the gallery if you like the oldies!

    Cheers,

    Woody1975

tune up the bike first, ignition timing, valve gaps, compression check and new spark plugs.

then get back to us if it still plays silly buggers.

ps check out motorcycle mechanics october issue (UK), they have a feature on the tx/xs500.

    come on england!!!

  16. no, I had the noise before changing the oil too... I do know what you are talking about (it being very slippy), but I find it makes the gear changes smoother and quicker... the only time it is bad is when I rev it up too quickly while releasing clutch too slowly... it slips as in it revs up quicker then it should without making the bike move much (not enough rezistence).

It is a small power bike, so even doing hard acceleration, the clutch grips fine. I went on a 500km trip last weekend and tried everything and ran fine. The noise comes on only some days, when it is cold... for all I know I could start it up right now and it might be fine.

Its the polymers in the oil with synths, your not supposed to use full synth. sounds like you are getting some clutch slip and it will get worse as the cork on the clutch starts to go as they are not designed with synth in mind!!

    your choice of course

I wonder if an outer bearing seal is becomming brittle and when cold becames harder? maybe a crank/camshaft seal if it is revs dependant. A trick is to use a long screwdriver and listen like a stethescope for the loudest part.
