  1. I'm currently rebuilding a 1980 DT175MX.

Sadly its been sitting in a shed for 17 years so has accumulated a hell of a lotta rust in lots of places. I've almost stripped it down to the frame now and would be grateful for any advice on what anyone thinks the best methods for rust removal are.

I've been told about all sorts from 'blasting' to 'dipping' and would love to know what people's experiences are.

    Cheers

    Josh

I used triple-S powder coaters who prefer to cover all the threads themselves. they are based in keithly nr Leeds.

google triple s and the web site is full of info what to do.

Classic bike and classic motorcycle mechanics use them, 'nough said.

  2. I am trying to obtain a new oil cooler, the hosed and fittings for an '83 XJ550. For some reason these are not shown or listed in the spares catalogue.

    Can anyone help ?

your right, I looked on the micro fiches and can see no oil cooler reference.

the only alternative i can see (as long as you have the oil line in/out from the engine) is to get hoses made and buy an after market oil cooler. they are easy to source and lines are easy to get made up.

    hope that helps

  3. Just picked up a 82 xs400 dohc and upon inspection noticed the rear shock seams to be worn. This is my first motorcycle so I'm not sure if the shock is rebuildable or if i can simply readjust it into spec. Also, I've searched for a new replacement piece but they're discontinued. I've seen some old ebay listings with used shocks, but would rather stay away from that if possible (dont know what i'm getting).

Are there any recommendations as to aftermarket pieces or shocks from a different bike that'd work. Just want to see if there is someone out there who has figured it out already before I start busting into it.

    THANKS!

  4. Hi All, I'm new here. Just purchased a 1981 RS 125 and I need all the info I can get for a proper restoration especially the engine. Any help is greatly appreciated, regards

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

I suggest you first get a Haynes manual and read it. Then post any specific problems you encounter along the way and we'll be pleased to help you.

best post in the "workshop" or "classic" part of the forum tho' for quicker replies

  5. got my 76 xs off the fixin table and shes a roller again, lots of little stuff left, finish rebuild on carbs, find a headlight , finish the wiring , and decide weather to swap out the charging system for something newer. this bike started out as a low mile one owner barn bike that was totaly neglected .

schweet, what tank are you using?

  6. It does leak out when I pull the pipe off - I figured it was left over fuel in there. Now that I think about it though, it would keep coming - kinda sputtered out. I guess this means I need to replace / rebuild the petcock?

As an aside, I am going to clean the tank and add an inline filter.

yep sounds like pet cock gone, which will flood the carbs.

    Always use an inline filter.

  7. hi all

just spent some hard earned money on a 1990 xtz 750 and all seemed well initially (great fun bike )

starts fine but after 10 mins or so of riding perfectly on the 3 occasions i have riddden it , closed throttle going into corner and serious misfire has started and continued all the way home .

bike ticks over ok but blipping throttle on and off eventually just coughs and dies .

any advice will be greatly appreciated

filters are new , have plugs to fit tomorrow.

    regards martin

Poss fuel starvation, check the pet cap has air vent unblocked and tap has no crud in it which would then point to crud in the carbs blocking main jet.

you don't say which cyls go off, or is it random?

  8. Well I assume it is something in the float bowls. I drained the float bowls hoping it would come out. I plug them up, opened the petcock to prime for a few seconds, and put it back to run. I cranked it and it gave me a "put put" once. I took out the plugs and one side is covered with suit and the other is ok. Why would one side be so rich?

I am letting it air out and will try and crank it later.

edit: I got it to turn on momentarly. I let the RPMs get low and it cut off. I went to crank it back up and it wouldn't. After a few no-starts I took the plugs out, they look ok other than the unburnt fuel. I'm letting it air out again. The carbs intimidate me a bit - looks like I am taking them to the mechanic to look at?

check your petcock is not leaking through the pipe. can you pull off the pipe from the carb and only a small amount of fuel runs out?

next is your float height and float needle, you can get keyster kits from sirrius online and you can just replace the float needle ( as they wear and flood the carb) or if feeling adventurous, replace all the jets supplied.

  9. not yet.

the bike only has 5900 miles on it and i rebuilt the petcock, there should not be a problem.

just buy a new one and have done, its not having it!, so bite the bullet. :(

if you were in the uk i would have looked at it for you.

  10. My YB has been has been peeeing fuel out of the overflow pipe for a while now, so i took the carb off today and discovered that one off the floats is letting fuel in, hence not shutting the float valve. anyone know where i can get new floats or a new carb?

  11. Hi,

Does anyone have any info, or a website I can look at for parts for my bike.

I can't find much info on a google search

I want a picture of what one looked like in its hey-day. I need to get a few things for my bike, like a body panel and a new seat.

Whilst I can find websites that can sell me mirrors and gasket kits, the same cannot be said for the seat and the body panels...

Also, the battery needs charging. The battery is new but has sat for awhile. I was told this is a 6volt battery, so will a normal car battery charger (12v) blow my battery up?

www.pgm1.freeserve.co.uk (rd but i buy for my XS here)

don't use a 12v battery on a 6v bike, 6v batteries are so cheap its not worth it. Get Father Christmas to send you an Optimate for Crimbo (one that will do 6v as well as 12v) keep this on your bike in storage. I have one on mine as I write

BTW the RS is an RD without an extra carb and no reed valve. Classic Mechanics has a feature in this month on your very bike!!

  12. Hi,

I'm new to this forum, and I have joined as I have recently got a 1981 XS500.

I have already managed to source numerous parts from ebay, however I'm having problems finding a new oil filter cartridge, either the original large size one, or the later update which I believe was an adapter seal, allowing a smaller cartridge to be fitted.

Does anyone know where I maybe able to source this in the UK?

    Thanks Jime

get a parts book so its easier to identify the parts you are after and not get an earlier model part which is different. (its happened to me and they also get superceded)

  13. It seems to stay on if I keep my hand on the throttle. I tried again tonight and it would idle with the choke open. After awhile I closed the choke and it idled for a good while before it cut off (what I would expect for not running more than 10-15 minutes). It would start right back up.

One question though, is the choke supposed to have more states than just open and closed?

(it is a 1980 XS400 special ii, but with points (long story).)

I have another question too - I have a working headlight but It won't turn on with the bike. Instrument panel lights up and the tail light works. There are no directionals (as in none are connected). I have a multimeter but I am not sure exactly which wires I should be testing for current and at what voltage. Anys uggestions?

Thanks for the answers to the nub questions.

on mine its a 2 stage affair with a ball/sping combination in the cartbs acting on indents on the choke rod.

I usually start it on full, take it right down to 1/2 way, and fully in after a minute. My bike will "drop off" the revs if left for a min or so at the lights, its down to modern fuels and old design. just blip the throttle when the engine starts shunting. you could also have a blocked pilot screw which will affect the tick over (yours might be sealed, its on top/in front of the main carb body)

got an xs400d circuit diagram, which should share the colours of yours

  14. no, the fuel line.

i set it to on and it leaks.

i set it to res and it leaks.

half way between them both and it leaks.

I'm assuming that you mean it has free fuel flow rather than an external leak?

is the lever hard to turn?, it should do as i have rebuilt mine and it is stiff, you need to make sure everything is in the right order off a parts or workshop manual (you can see an online version at motogrid) ensuring the rubber is the right way round and covering the right holes etc.

  15. Went out there this morning - took out the plugs and cleaned them really well with compressed air. Put them back in, kept the choke closed and cranked on it. Finally it started it. I let it sit for a minute, keeping it at about 3k rpms. I opened the choke to see what it would do and it killed the engine.

    Any ideas?

can you keep the bike going with revs when warmed up?

  16. what tire sizes should i get?

    18" 3.00 front

    18" 3.75 rear

so what does that break down to?

    18" 100 front?

    18" 120 rear?

too big, i have 90/90 front and 110/90 rear on BT45 Battlax.

I got an old xs250 with a 120 on and it fouled the swing arm

  17. He laid her on the table so white and clean and bare.

His forehead wet with beads of sweat, he rubbed her here and there.

He touched her neck and felt her breast then drooling felt her thigh.

The slit was wet and all was set, he gave a joyous cry.

The hole was wide, he looked inside, all was dark and murky.

  18. Hi ive just bought 1978 DT 175 so i was told it has no number plate and no docs. its frame and engine number matches i was told i can find out what it really is with them can anyone help? greatly appreciated

    In essence.....no.

you need to get a new registration, to keep an age related plate you need a dating cert from VJMC.

I would badger the previous owner, he/she may have pictures of the bikewith the number plate on
