It sounds like a very good idea instead of butchering the cover with holes, like was done extensively with the little DT's of yesteryear.
-

maybe not I cannot say, perhaps you could take off the inlet manifold and use a mirror and a small led light or the light on your cell phone to see down the inlet tract. If you see something...how about a compressed air line to blow it out?? Dunno it's your call but have a look while you have the carb off.
-
Greetings erik What a great intro you have made, hope you get lots of fair weather to enjoy your new old toy. ...Paul

Could it be possible that a large enough piece of the filter has passed through the carb and is resting at the inlet valve...blocking the airflow?
-
It might be a good idea to study a parts manual/list, it will show exploded views of the engine.

What ratio do you want? I would guess 40:1 5 litres is 5000 ml (millilitres) 5000/40 = 125ml so then 125ml of oil in 5 litres fuel Mobile phones have a calculator so it's easy enough to work out in the garage forecourt.

keep an eye on your spark plugs because this type of mod could cause lean running
-
sounds to me your crank is full of fuel...or coolant
-
How about tank venting, when the issue arises stop and open the gas cap...hear any rush of air? Greetings
-
Hardly thin petrol would pour through like a tap...this would be the oil slug more likely. still no sign of life then?
-
fair point but with hardly any compession suction will also suffer badly?
-
