I think they would be the same, most of the xs range from the same era used yam parts bins. usually if it looks the same, it is.

that's a latre one, a "custom" bike. I do like the xs650 (prefer the XS1 version with drum brake meself)

depends, does he like riding or fixing? the xs will be a great bike but will need fettling depending on condition etc the virago's will be more dependable (depending on condition) boils down to back lane scratching or cruising the highway/posing

I got mine from motoward, you need the correct type. Part # starts off with 1L9-11416- then 00 blue, 10 black, 20 brown and 30 Green.
