  1. is there a mix up with cut off switch and starter? did you check all the colour connections in the headlamp? is there anything else that runs off the solinoid and is taking power on the wrong side of the actuator, so will only power when the solinoid is energised?
  2. Tom from Buffalo you can get new carbs if your so inclined (not original spec) a company sells the modern mikuni on ebay for xs650's but I'm sure they will jet them for a 400. drewps

  6. if you think its electrical, than its a case of checking all electrical connections including the coils. There may be a ballast resistor in there which is bypassed when the starter is used and reverts back to the ballast resistor in normal operation. If this is faulty or badly earthed, then it could give you the sinmptoms you descibe!! I don't have the DOHC manual but there is one in the sticky I made at the top of this thread drewps
  7. I'd say its an earth problem ie lack of a good earth. check the connections (black)

  9. sorry, didn't explain very well.. no, the vaccum pulls a diaphram in the petrol tap, which opens up the fuel flow into the carbs. you said the fuel filter had a rather low level and when you went on to reserve it ran fine!!!

if you go that route use a proper motorcycle powder coater like triple s or grifs reality works. they are really not that expensive and do know their stuff. I tried a local powder coater and it came out shit.

  18. need to keep the oil clean as the cam runs in the head, no bearings!! make sure you use yam oil filters as after market stuff can impede oil flow. give the engine a good degrease bfore to take off the oil cover or you will get crud in the engine. If you are just replacing the oil its 2L if replacing the filter as wel its 2.3Litres drewps
  19. did you lose the steel ball along the clutch rod? it sits between the steel mushroom part and the clutch rod near the clutch basket
