if they are the strainght pipes and not the specials, all SOHC xs250 360 and 400's will fit, they may have slightly different caps at the end , but it won't affect performance

will this help any? http://www.dropbears.com/y/yamaha/modelcodes.htm

don't need no steering damper, its been sweet up to the ton before. got to be head bearings, tyre pressure's ok. oK re: DT just raise the compression, lap in the head without gasket.

FR firing right pot, FL firing left pot. these are the markings you use to strobe. make sure the bike is at tickover ie not activating the advance mechanism. I'd highlight those markings with tipex paint, the LT and RT marks are for valve adjustment

oh dear! did a couple of hours today meself. I re tuned my bike yesterday using a dwell AND strobe together, worked a treat! just got to cure a tank slapper @ 80 now (hopefully just loose head bearings)

Hi M&M and re- to the forum there's not too many differences on the engine specs for the heritage, in fact I have the official yamaha SH manual I use for my 2A2 model. 1981 is the SH model and is 4R4 http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xs400sh-1981_model8826/partslist/ not surwe what parts your after, but you may struggle for seats and badges.
