Moderator DirtyDT Posted March 23, 2014 Moderator Posted March 23, 2014 Is anyone in the UK using a legal CB radio?
feliks Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Although I'm not in the UK... I have a CB radio in my truck, and I don't use it. I find cell phones have almost made them obsolete, unless you're into talking to lonely truckers on long hauls... (or lorry drivers as you call em )
Moderator drewpy Posted March 23, 2014 Moderator Posted March 23, 2014 last time I used one was when i was 15.
mike1949 Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Is anyone in the UK using a legal CB radio? Is that as in "Smokey and the bandit" 10-4 good buddy Rodger Dodger Over and out, etc
Moderator Cynic Posted March 23, 2014 Moderator Posted March 23, 2014 Used to when I marshalled at off road 4wd events. Why?

Moderator DirtyDT Posted March 24, 2014 Author Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Is that as in "Smokey and the bandit" 10-4 good buddy Rodger Dodger Over and out, etc A bit like that Mike . As for why; I havent seen one in the flesh since the end of the AM era but I have been looking at classic cars for a while and keep getting drawn to Land Rover "series" era ones with bad everything, apart from looks. A radio would be useless as I wouldn't be able to hear it over the whine of the gearbox, axles and bits rattling around so I wondered if a CB would keep me interested. I know the Defender/90 was a leap forward in useability but if I was going to get one of those I would probably buy a new one as my "proper" car next year when my current car is 3 years old and due for a change.
Ttaskmaster Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Is anyone in the UK using a legal CB radio? Yes, very much so. Actually, I didn't think there was any point in the illegal ones, especially since they scrapped the licence. Only folk I know using illegal ones are DXing and even then they do it via the computer at home, rather than hiking up a mountain with amps and stuff. I have a Midland 42 rig that used to live on my Dragstar. I'm still fiddling with the FJ, but will end up transferring that over once I figure out the luggage setup. Best thing about that (aside from the price) is the ability to switch between mobile and vehicle mode - There are 2 battery boxes (1 regular, one rechargable) and a 12v car kit all included in the box. Rubber duck clips off, main antenna lead is already on the 12v, just swap and go. Decent amount of power, too. 2-pin socket for a standard bike headset. http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/handheld-cbs/midland-42.html I also have one of the last 1st generation Midland/Alan 48 Plus Multi rigs set up at home. Just like the 42, it has 40 Mid, 40 Muppet and a load of Euro freeqs that have people jabbering in forin languages. The new ones are slightly better: http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/mobile-cbs/midland-48-plus-multi-b.html Plenty of folk around still got ears on, but fewer twats keying up and all that, especially outside of 14 and 19. I loved it on the bike as you get an easy 8-10 mile Tx/Rx over the 1.4km from PMR446 (if you're very lucky and the sun is shining and you're not moving and you're within 3 feet of the other bike, that is...) Was never any good at the Foxhunts, though. Plenty of places still selling kit, but Thunderpole is always a favourite!!
Moderator Cynic Posted March 24, 2014 Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 Foxhunts, that something I havent done in a long time. Dirty, find a local land rover club and go try the 'experience'. The bad everything sIII really was, rotted like old fruit. Same with early coilers. Either get really new, which is a lot of cash for a bad car if you dont need what it does or buy old, very old. Stuff from the 60's they were made out of materials before the pennypinchers. Looking at a few grand for anything worthwhile with an mot. Bit of a LR fan, not a bad as I was but been running them in some form for the last 15yrs. Currently a 4.6 P38.
AndrewElvisFan Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 I'm sure somewhere 'safely packed' I have 10" open air sub, a couple of 8" 3-way's, a 250 amp and a 200 amp if you change your mind! A few years old but as I don't have an Escort anymore haven't re-fitted them!!
georgen Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Was out green laning yesterday so yes was using one, mate was out in his series as-well, He used to have one but could not here it so gave it away lol. took us 4.5 hrs to do 3/4 of a mile so you could say it was fun. about 6 bikes came down the lane using gravity to help (we were going up), they nearly fell off laughing at us.
Moderator mervin Posted March 24, 2014 Moderator Posted March 24, 2014 We use em in the trucks , useful when you are in narrow lanes to,let each other know where you are , and you can stop in passing places to save backing up , and when you are coming in/out of the local quarry you can shut to see if anyone is coming up/down the hill and wait until they are in the quarry or claer the junction at the top , all the 10 3 plastic chicken crap is gone though , we use normal english 1
DutchFJ1200 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Yup got one in the CJ7. Only use it on green laning trips in company & events. Don't wanna drop the Blackberry in the dirt
DutchFJ1200 Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Get it on yer bikes, people!! Every single day now. Life on the FJ1200 is sweet
