New Bike

As folk know, as much as I love my Yams my true passion is auld Brit bikes and Triumphs in particular, so today I bought this

tis a 1959 Triumph Speedtwin 5ta 500cc.

Looking forward to a wee bit of fettling and getting this auld bird back on the road.

What do ya think...

The bloke says it is and it would just need a battery. He says he fired it up last week and it started 2nd kick. I have turned the engine over, and rigged up a battery to check for a spark, but dont want to start it until I give it an oil and filter change, as well as getting the carb cleaned out in an ultrasonic bath.

The bike is on a Q plate and was registered in 1984 by the guy I bought it off. He says it was easier then, to get the Q than an age related plate. I have sent pics of the bike, as well as the engine and frame number to the Owners club who will send me a dating certificate which I will present to the DVLA in Glasgow and (hopefully) get issued with an age related plate.

Verry nice something about thoes old triumps they look more modern. Is it still 6v points or has someone got it fixed up with a elec ignition. 12v?

Yea, upgraded to 12v and Boyer E/Ignition fitted. The timing casing has been changed to accept the sender unit and the dissy hole in the crankcase has been blanked off.

Yea

Alloy rims

brakes relined

new wheel bearings

reground crank

new main bearings

new big ends

morgo oil pump

hi-output alternator

stainless fork sliders

and a primary belt drive

Bad points

one silencer is badly corroded

tank needs a respray (just spoke with my mate, so thats sorted)

General recommissioning, it has not been on the road for 5 years so some oil and grease and away I go (hopefully)

Crackin wee bike man, but don't get it too shiny or you'll be feart to ride it! Personally I like the used and abused look, rather than restored. ''the patina of age'' as they say on those antique progs on telly, lol, enjoy it man

I Had the 350 version ,Although not nearly in as good nick as yours. Cost me a tenner way way back .when i was 15. We used to ride on the mount at the back of our house.Oh the Good old days.....

Cool with all the good stuff added already she shoud be a good and dependable ride. Old school with just enough new stuff inside so most would think it's as she was when new but better. Just them anil carbs to deal with never liked them myself,but if you have been around the block of frustration with setting them up ,which I,m sure you must have, it will be like a time machine everytime you throw a leg over.
