Yeah if you take the cover off just kinda let it hang there you will see the gear or sprocket that the chain goes around that gear or sprocket is on a shaft that has like 4 teeth that line up with the grooves in the gears so that they mesh or synn together if that gear is not pushed all the way against the back of the shaft it will kick all day long but not start. I hope this helps and fixes your problem it was so simple when I figured it out. after you put the cover back on though you should pull the clutch a few times so that is working right.

You said not working??? It says in the auction it runs and he has driven it.. So what about that is not working??? I dunno I was gonna buy it well make an offer on it seems like you all are against it... Like I said I paid 500.00 for mine and it was a barn bike as well mine had sat for years but maybe you think I paid to much for mine. Anyway just curious to what people were thinking of it. Why do you say not even worth that? I paid 500.00 for mine when I bought it and it didnt run at all!! I have seen these bike go for 600 or so not running? I mean we all know they have potential. I did talk to the guy he said he would accept 450.00 doesnt sound bad to me. I dunno

What you can do is take the cover off the side where the cabe goes in. You will see the chain going around the gear that is on the shaft. That gear may have moved over just a little which wont allow the bike to kick. Well it will kick but not start. I had this happen to mine and it took me forever to find out what was wrong. Until I took the 6 allen bolts out and pulled the cover off The chain was on the gear but it had moved over just about an half an inch not allowing it to turn the bike over. Very easy take maybe 10 min. You will have to take the shifter off though in order to pull the cover off. That gear has slots that sync it on the shaft. I hope you understand this and it help fixed my problem.

I got it worked out and can I say WOW what a surprise this little thing has a lot more pep than my other 400. What I did was fired it up and on the left side the cylinder that wasnt running I took a rag and put my hand tightly over that carb and reved it to about 3k and i guess it sucked any remaining crud out of the carb and it putter and popped and smoked and then it worked out and man am I so very surprised and happy. I hit 80 mph in a heart beat. I think I may need to go over my other 400 and check things out it runs fine but doesnt have the zip that this one does.

No it's a xs400 special 5o is the max I can get out of it!

Hey guys I finally have most of my bike done other than the seat and a few other cosmetics. Anyway took it out today for what i was hoping to be a nice drive... I could only go 50mph max it's not the carbs Im almost certain because i had them apart twice and they are clean. I'm running on one cylinder cause I pulled the left plug wire while bike was running and it did what it should cut the bike off. Put that plug wire back on started bike then pulled left side and bike stayed running!!! Thought it would maybe be no spark pulled the plug started bike I had spark and am getting gas.....So what does this mean my valve is stuck on this side or what????? What can I do to fix this I know you all are gonna say do a compression test dont have a tester at the moment. But when I get one later today or tomorrow compression should be what about 145 or so??? Anyhelp youguys can give me I would appreciate it thanks all.

So does that mean that I wont need the old wiring?? If that is the case what about the coils,starter assy so on and so forth.

These are the wires coming from what i assume is the stator As you can see the harness coming out on the right hand side has 4 white wires and the one on the left has 1black 1green 1blue and 1 yellow so which of these do I use????

There are five wires coming from the rect 3 white 1 red 1 black. I just took the complete wiring harness off the bike there is so many freakin connections surely I dont need all this? What are the two connections coming from the back of the engine. If I knew how to put pics on I would.

Damage to what??!! It has never been hooked up and the bike has always run fine. Neither is the other thing connceted to the battery box that look like a relay not hooked up if they are so important than why has the bike been running fine without them??

Hey guys another question. I want to do away with most of my wiring. All I am gonna have is a headlight and tailight. I wanted to find out what I can here first before I go cutting things off or anything like that. I was wondering about the RECTIFIER ASS'Y i think that's it under the battery has fins.. Anyway Can i get rid of it i unhooked it and it doesnt seem to make a difference in the running of the bike?

Yes it rolls fine while running in neutral. Even if i put it in gear it rolls fine but if i let out enough to pull forward then pull the clutch back in it wont roll back only forward.

It has been fine it just started yesterday. I am thinking clutch maybe because it does it sometimes not all the time. If i am driving and come to a stop it will roll back but if I stop and then pull up a little it wont roll. So it only does it after a stop then a little pull up but if i stop and hold the clutch in the whole time without releasing i can push it back or it will roll. So that is why I am thinking maybe clutch is out of adjustment. I dont know why the post was so funny.............

Hey guys, I have a problem not sure what exactly. I almost have my project done on chopping down my 78 xs400 Took it out today for a test run just installed new calipers and all new brake lines also a new throttle cable and cleaned the carbs. So I wanted to see how it was running and stopping. Anyway to the problem. I came to a stop and you know when you are stopped in gear with the clutch in your bike will roll backwards as if in neutral, well mine didnt i was trying to back up and well I couldnt even push back but I could roll forward!!!!????? Not sure what this is but it's done it a couple time today not sure what's goin on. Help me out fellas if you have any ideas. Thanks

Hey fellas, I have another question. I have a problem with my bike, it runs fine on flat land.... I was driving around the yard today and I have a slight hill in front of the house.. I was in first just cruzin around had my son on with me I couldnt make it up the hill?????? Just bogged way down and shut off.... I went around the yard again fine tried to go up the little hill and same problem... any help would be appreciated..... runs fine on the road but its gonna bug me till I figure it out it should pull that hill

Hey everyone, Does anyone know where or have youhad anyone make a custom seat for your 400special? I want something that sits lower. I had a guy make the one for my xs that I have as my avatar but, he isnt around anymore. Just thought I would ask any suggestions? Maybe try to do it myself. I dunno I am redoing another xs400 I have total resto on it. So far Im good for the road except the seat and I need a new front brake caliper. anyway any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey guys I have another question. I need a wiring diagram for my bike. I took everything off the front cause I changed out the handle bars and the head light. I'm not putting the turn signals back on in front or rear because well I dont need them for any reason. I also got a new tach and speedo. So I need to know how to wire every thing back up please help with this. I could sit there for hours trying to figure it out and blow fuses.......but I would rather not. Thanks in advance.

Yeah I think so. Let me know what you want. I found a local shop that can order me one for 18.00 so if Im gonna pay that I would rather have a new one. But let me know could always use a backup.

Im not sure?! Dont know what they are worth to you.....?? I have seen sets go for as little as 110.00 up to 275.00 I think either price is cheap let me check around and you let me know what you wanna pay. They arent going anywhere.
