  1. Fair enough, I'll crack out the bad joke book :)

Also please excuse my sporadic posting, I've figured out that the electrical rennovation in my village is playing havoc with everything... Had to use a camping stove last night when the power went!

I've replaced the sprocket Cynic, although the noise is still there a little. It got quieter before I changed it, and was roughly the same volume after. I'm pretty sure it's just chain noise now though, because I went through and eliminated the other possible causes. Cheers for the advice!

Are you sure it is not the chain having a greater contact patch with the chain-guide at the front of the swing-arm? On the XJ6 it makes quite a pronounced noise rubbing on the chain-guide rubber, more so if you run smaller sprockets. Never appeared to be a problem though.

  2. Hi all

Tomorrow I will be the proud owner of a XVS 250!

I had to sell my ninja due to my disability and cannot wait to get back on a bike! Looking forward to putting mods on the bike!

    Hi to everyone!

    Maz

    You are also on wiltshirebikers?

    welcome either way.

  3. Hi you, Im going to Holland from Hull, (P&O ferry) any info on bike tie-down on board, do I need my own ratchet straps ? ease of boarding ? any info Id be grateful, thanks

Well I haven't done that route - but have used ferries a lot. They usually keep rachet straps in a box/bin near the bike parking places. Some will lash the bike down for you, some will leave you too it. Some have cushions to protect the seat - i'd take an old towel just in case.

I've used P&O Dover-Calais and I think they leave you to sort it yourself. If you have sidestand and centrestand, as improbable as it sounds, it is better (in my exp) on the sidestand, as the tension compresses the suspension.

    Where are you going?

  4. Do you wear a billowing jacket and/or trousers?

a loose fitting jacket that catches the air, can slow any bike down (or mean more throttle), particularly one with less than 15bhp - likewise a topbox can do the same.

I find wearing my leather jacket always means less throttle (a surprising amount less) for high-speed cruising than my textile jacket.

  5. I've heard the car will pass MOT emissions test withought the underfloor cat. Never done it myself though and I've never passed emissions withought a cat on another car even though people said I would.

Check where the DP meets the underfloor cat. It will have either a slip joint or a flange and olive. If flange and olive, get a new olive for about £5 from an exhaust fitter. In my experience, I found that to pull the sections apart you need to get the exhaust rear boxes back wards and there may not be enough slack in the hanger. There is a bracket that can be undone that supports the back box but it's nuts become corroded, also, the dome headed bolt is captive within the bumper support so if it starts to turn with the nut, it's an air saw/grinder job and new nuts + bolts. Support the back boxes, possibly undo the middle support rubber at the end of the underfloor cats (there is room for fore and aft movement but it's easy enough to undo) and undo the 3 (or 2 if olive) circlips and in an ideal world the parts should separate - try some wd40, swearing, hammer, twisting etc to loosen.

I'd strongly advise to get an emissions test done after the work. I've been roadside tested before, fortunately with cat installed. The police were there and the VOSA people. I'm not sure what the rules are here, if they look under the cat and find you've removed cat/s deliberately, there may be a hefty fine to pay.

The original thread from January is about top-boxes, not car exhausts - not sure what your drinking, but i want some!

  6. Has anyone had there chroming done at Bob Cooper's in Coventry recently as I have your RD header pipes and you have mine.

I picked up my chrome on the 19 May and there was a set of other RD stuff on the bench.

The one's I got are off a newer model as there quite short and totally different angle compared to the spare set I have.

PS. My bike is an RD350B

I hope your on this site...

that ain't good - weren't the jobs booked and serial numbered differently? I hope they don't do any jobs where traceability is critical.......

  7. this weather is really getting on my nerves, ive never known a summer like it. i must have washed the xj at least ten times since i bought it in may and every time i get it nice and shiney, it rains!!!!!!!

We get plenty of wet summers, the big problem is prior to april we had 18months of massively dry weather and, well, we got used to it.

Since summer really started this week (the solstice) we might yet have a good one. Last year we were still enjoying dry sunday rides to places like Weymouth in late october- all this wet weather is payback...........

  8. now all you want to do is ride it and all it does is keep raining. all i want to do is ride my xj6 but the rain ruins it.

Was wet here until 10am, has beene dry since. The weekend does not look as good.

  9. Whats the insurance costs on a restricted bike. Hopefully my 18 yr old son will be going through his test this summer and he has his eye on a bigger (restricted) bike. As I will be paying the insurance, I'm interested in the ball park price

It's effectively insured as if it were unrestricted (though you should declare the restriction), you could therefore try out some quotes on mcn compare (other comparisons sites are available). Most insures do state in the small print (the 'endorsements') that if a license has restrictions these must be obeyed for the insurance to be valid.

  10. Hello guys

I'm looking at getting the V35 Givi panniers for my Xj6. BUT from a picture I saw they seem really close to the pillion pegs[not sure if it was the angle of the picture]

I really want them for longer distance stuff but not if the pillion is going to lose out?

Any one who knows please shed some light for me! Thanks !!!

    Will,

I had the Givi PLXR rack on my XJ6 and Kappa K33N panniers (they are almost identical to the Givi V35s). Sadly i never actually had a pillion on there with the panniers, but your thoughts are bang on, a pillion would have a tough time.

  11. There a great bike merv, Thats the FZ1 n, aint it,, i rode one in ireland last year,, very nimble, :thumb:

It's the FZ1S with half fairing.

  12. Cool Merv, there are a really great bike

When does she land on your doorstep ?

Friday after work all being well - this will be a long week. Doing nought now, and very bored as my budget for the month is now a bit different.

Already looking at some goodies. It does have a givi topbox rack (i have a givi topbox), a baglux tank cover (I have a baglux tankbag in the loft) and heated grips.

Will buy a pannier rack so I can fit my Kappa K33Ns.

Can't wait to max it on the Autobahn (or maybe up the M32!).

  13. Done the deal today to chop the XJ6 in for an FZ1. Nearly new with a few handy mods.

Will be sad to see the XJ6 go, but as I have no car now, wanted a bike that was a tiny bit more fun.

Had a ball-ache with the insurance, when I renewed the XJ6 I put the panniers and hugger as mods: the result of which means the underwriter wouldn't cover the FZ1. Had to cancel and go elsewhere, money down the drain. The best bit was both the old and new companies told me panniers, huggers, poncy indicators and stuff don't need to be declared. Damn it try to play by their rules and they still stiff you.....

    ,,,,, can't wait for the FZ1, 150bhp, EXUP,

    very excitificated now!!!!

  14. Seriously it was my neighbour. I have some brake cleaner. I went inside to make a coffee and when I come back he'd done it. I knew not to put wd40 on because I asked my dad about the squeaking and he told me whatever I do not to put WD on them.

    The squeak has gone though.

  15. Go for it - i work by a Harley dealer; used to hate them but now i actually quite like them. As Drewpy's sig says they are noisy, gutless bits of pig iron. But they are pretty rugged and have a style that no-one quite emulates (victory maybe?).

If i get another bike, i think a harley will be high up the list.
