  1. Started toying with some ideas here....I covered up the purple stripe with silver... looked pretty good. But I wanted clean, plain, black....no silver lines. So I took everything off and got started! After I welded the plastic back together, I gave it a good sanding and started with the spot putty. More sanding and putty. Primer... After final coat of primer! Black painted on the uppers, still needs clear coat.
  2. That's not good! I got lucky with this bike... I purchased it for $900 not even seeing it running... but the guy seemed trustworthy, it was an older gentleman and he just didn't want a "crotch rocket" anymore...as he said. So I got it, bought a battery, and it fired up. I have done some tinkering with it to get it running good, and it leaks and burns a bit of oil, so it will be a winter project to take it apart and fix whatever's causing that. Until then, I'm doing what I can! I've spent the day smoothing out the fairings the best I could and painting the purple stripes on the front fairing black. Last piece to paint is the gas tank.
  3. Oh, I also added a Mr Brakesafe brake light flashing module to the bike, for added safety and visibility! $25 off ebay.
  4. First came the easy stuff.... oil change, spark plug change, rewire spark plugs so they were in the right order (PO had them all messed up), flush gas, seafoam gas and oil...and then did another oil change after driving it around for a bit. Now, I'm working on the paintjob and fixing the fairings (you can see the lower left isn't even attached here). They are all cracked, fiberglassed from behind, and in pretty rough shape. I've welded the plastic cracks, sanded, and spot puttied them, and they're in for primer now. Doing some back and forth spot-putty/primer to get them nice and smooth before I hit them with a final coat of gloss black. Then, I'm going to try my hand at airbrushing some realistic flames. I've done airbrushing in the past, but nothing this big...should be a good challenge. Here's a video of the crack fixing, I ended up using a slightly better method after I recorded this, and that was to put the cable tie in between the soldering iron tip, instead of on the outside, it melted it nicely while the outside of the iron melted the fairing plastic.
  5. This will be an ongoing build thread of my 1986 FZ600 project. I have yet to decide on a name...so that is still TBD. I mainly just wanted a place to track my progress...get help along the way... and maybe get some feedback from other enthusiasts. Here she is, the day I got her home, I couldn't lift it off the truck by myself, but I was so excited I had to hop on and pretend I was cruising anyway.
  6. Sounds like it's going a lot faster than it is....bet it's still fun, but keeps you outta trouble.

  8. Thanks for the welcome dt! I got my license and bike after the one in September, but I did drive through town a few times in my Ram Always fun times!
  9. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! Hmm I tried img tags, do they have to be in caps? Worked in CAPS... I'll edit my first post to add the pic.
  10. Hey everyone! I've been browsing the forums and decided I might as well introduce myself! Name's Ryan, I'm 31, brand new to motorcycles, and I live in the little town of Port Dover, Ontario. Some of you may have heard of it before... A motorcycle has been the one machine on wheels which has eluded me. I have drove everything from cars, little trucks, big trucks, boats, snowmobiles, quads...3wheelers....and anything else that you can fit a motor in, but I've honestly always been a little intimidated and maybe even scared to ride a motorcycle. It was almost a conquest for me.... I had to face my fears. I searched and searched for the perfect newbie starter bike. I was originally looking at a 250, but I wasn't sure if I'd outgrow it too soon and just end up selling it. While browsing for bikes... I came across a 500 Ninja that I was so close to buying...but the seller was a flake and never wanted to meet up, I had cash in hand too...so I gave up on him, and continued looking... I found a 1986 FZ600 and boy is she a beauty...only 25k kms on it. I went and looked at it, everything looked good, but the battery was completely shot. I didn't know if it ran or what...but I bought it on a whim anyway. Rolled it into the back of my truck and brought it home....then started tinkering! First things first - new battery, filled it, and charged it up. While I was putting the battery in... I noticed the really shoddy fuse work done by whoever was in there before... blue butt connectors on frayed wires, with glass tube fuses!! Ahhh! Took those apart, got proper waterproof fuse holders, soldered and shrink tubed everything up. I had to see if the old girl would fire up...checked the oil level first, good, put fresh gas in, and then I put the key in. Turned it on. Woo! Lights turned on...signals all work, horn works! That's a good sign. Now, turn the kill switch to "run" and......hit the starter. Click click click click click click BOOOM vroom vrooom vrooooooom vroooooom vroooooom vrooooom vroooom dies. Well...it started! Woooooo! The idle was wayyy too low, so I used the idle adjustment screw to bring it up so it would stay running. Awesome. Now... to learn how to ride a motorcycle! lol Luckily I live in a new construction survey...and I have an empty block to ride on that my house is on, so I got to it. Put my helmet and gloves on, rolled it down the driveway and started it up. I watched a bunch of youtube videos about how to ride a motorcycle...and well, I guess that was enough. 3wheelers shift the same as a bike...so that made it easier to learn, and the fact I drive a manual car helped as well. I put the clutch in, stuck her in gear, and then slowly let the clutch out until I started moving...then gave it a little gas.....then let the clutch out all the way...and, I was riding a motorcycle for my first time ever!! After booting around the block, and learning how to control the clutch, I felt confident enough to get it on the open road. Got it out there...but it was slooooow. I didn't know how fast it should be but it felt like there was no throttle response..and I had to be above 8000rpm to actually get moving good. So I got it back in the garage and took the fairings off and started looking around. Everywhere I read and heard said "check the carbs, make sure they're synched...clean them..blah blah".... but I wanted to ride it for at least a couple weeks before winter comes, so I was reluctant to take everything apart already. While I was in there...I noticed the spark plug wires said 2,1,3,4....now, I'm no mechanic...but I think it's supposed to go 1,2,3,4, so I switched them, and while I was doing that, I noticed one boot wasn't even on, and one spark plug was hand tight in the block! Wtf! So fixed all that up...started it up..and HOLY S&@#! I guess it was running on 3cyl, and in the wrong firing order! No wonder it felt slow..... Had to go for a ride....WOW, what a frickin rush. The feeling was quite indescribable. Since that day, I've been going for a ride every single day, sometimes twice, just for the fun of it. I absolutely love it. Thanks for having me here, I'm sure I'll have a lot of newbie questions for you guys (and gals)! Someone painted the bike with purple stripes...for some crazy reason... it's in the process of being painted black, and I may try my hand at some ghost flames in there...

    86 FZ 600 questions

Just wanted to resurrect this thread and say thank you! I just got an 86 FZ600 with no owners manual...AND it's my first bike! I downloaded the factory service manual, have the haynes, but none of them say anything about the basics. So what's a newbie to do? Why look on the internet of course!
