  1. Hows everyone doing this evening? Noticed that my chain was a little slack the other day so decided to tighten slightly (very fractional amount) but after doing the rear brake cable locking nut back up ive noticed that the when applying the rear brake there is a sqeaking noise which seems to be coming from near the rear wheel. Is it that the rear wheel is not aligned perfectly or could it be that ive over done or under done the tightening on the rear brake cable nut? Sorry if this sounds like a newb question but, well, i am very much a newb! Thanks in advance
  2. Reg/rec came through in a week from Hong Kong, fitted it this morning, let the bike idle and the meter reading on the battery crept up to about 14.5v so i am one happy camper! Thanks to everyone for your help and advice its been much appreciated
  3. its not on the connectors but on the heatsink fins on the reg/rec itself. well it was until i got bored at work earlier and soaked the fins in coke and now its looking sparkly!! what is that stuff?
  4. awaiting a new reg/rec to be delivered now, thanks for all your advice!! hmm the powder stuff is a mystery then, its well and truly caked in the shite, need a knofe to scrap it all off!! looks like a weird sort of calcification
  5. because i asked that question before he posted the link to the pdf...
  6. I was browsing through my Virago XV 125 manual earlier and it said that when cleaning the air filter it should be cleaned with a solvent and then soaked in engine oil, with any excess being squeezed out. My question on this is two fold; a) What solvent are they referring to? and Why do you have to soak the filter in oil? Is it so that any debris sticks to the oil? Sorry for asking questions which seems very basic but not had to do any maintenance on my bike before and Im trying to learn as much as possible in a short period of time.
  7. right ive just located and removed the reg/rec, why is the whole thing covered in a blueish white powder? Ill assume its not meant to be like that? What do people think of the above link? Im always dubious of buying from abroad even though its a japanese bike
  8. thanks for the pdf ill have a look tomorrow when theres more light (my garage doesnt have a light).
  9. oh ive just seen this on ebay, worth going for or worth staying away from? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Voltage-Rectifier-Regulator-Yamaha-V-Star-XV250-Virago-Route-66-XV125-90-10-/130644141678?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e6aff666e
  10. Nice cheers, is there a way to meter a reg/rec to make sure that it is definitely the cause of my headache?
  11. is that a standard r6 with the fairing removed and a few bits chopped off here and there? Looks amazing!
  12. I have issues with my current reg/rec and was wondering (as ive never done anything bike related before), is it something I can fix myself or is it a matter of it just being plain knackered and needing swapping straight out for a new one? I dont want it to cost alot as its only a bike i intend on keeping until I pass the full test
  13. one thing before i turn in for the night, is there a way to test the reg/rec with a multimeter to check its functioning properly to determine the problem?
  14. brilliant thanks for all your advice so far ill see how i get on!
  15. ok thanks im gonna put the battery back in tomorrow and do all the things everyone has mentioned! the battery has been in my house for about a day now so is alot warmer so we'll see if that helps. if its a reg/rec or starter relay problem is this sort of thing i can repair myself?
  16. cool cheers ill try it when i get home. so it wouldnt be that the battery is dying and only has enough voltage to try and turn the starter motor but not fully start it? ive checked the spark plugs and they seem fine but ill try what you said. when you said about grounding the plugs to the fins do you mean the fins of the engine yea? sorry if this is a painful procedure but this is the first time ive done anything bike related Cheers
  17. im going to borrow a meter from work today and see what reading I get. I assume 12v is what im aiming for, anything less than that would mean its a dead battery? The battery is 2 years old to the day, i got the bike in september but it has been in a cold garage, untouched for a few months as I havent had time to go out on it. Im guessing that a long period of time in a cold garage has probably not helped the situation. Ive heard someone say it could be the Regulator/Rectifier? Ill use the meter today and post what reading I get from it! Thanks
  18. Hey guys ive got a 2000 Virgao XV125, all good with it until the other day. Had a ride from Benfleet to Stambridge via Southend (about 25 miles), all was well until I stopped the bike briefly (literally 2 minutes) and when I tried starting it again there was just a electrical cyclical sound coming from what I think it the starter motor! Had to bump start it to get it home. topped up battery with distilled water, cleaned connections to battery and went to charge it but charger read that battery was full but surely it couldnt be? Being a newb to anything bike related I really dont know the next step without taking it a garage which I dont want to do (and currently cant do as the bloody thing wont start!! Should I get a new battery or is it going to be another issue Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks
