  1. Engine flush with diesel or some such first then (assuming it's magnetic swarf) a new magnetic sump plug, you really should strip it but you might be lucky and get away with it. Otherwise you could just drop the sump and clean the lumps out..!

Take the filler plug out have the drain plug out as well and just pour oil in and straight out into another can then swap can's and keep going till you have no swarf left coming through. Try a magnet, one of those on a telescopic stick, and try to remove anything from the top of the engine via the oil ways. Good luck.

  2. Welcome to the YOC Danny. :D

Cynic is right about the cost, your in for a major unpleasant surprise when you get the quote..! Even if they only charge you £45 an hour (yes really..!) your going to be looking at serious money, buy the best tool kit you can afford and have at it. Oh yeah and don't forget spares prices as well, they will sting for sure.

  3. Well that's a new one, someone asking which bike will kill them the soonest..! Don't worry about it either bike will scare the crap out of you and the fear of God, but the most fun thing, for you at any rate will be telling the coroner how you were "just having fun" whilst looking into the eyes of the family of the folks you will probably kill as well. We were all like you once, most of us got over it eventually. If you live long enough come back and tell us how it feels.

  4. Sorry to hear about your problems Niklas, you know "nothing about motor vehicles" but decided to jump right in and strip the front off of your bike..! Brave mate really brave. Can I make a small request first tho? pop over to the "new members section and say "hello" you WILL get more replies if you say Hello. Oh one other thing, fill in your profile, it makes it easier to answer questions if we know where you are as there's no point in telling you about a great bloke that can help in Birmingham if you live in Timbuctoo. Just sayin..!

  5. Hi Chizzy, just a question mate, how many miles has it done? and is it serviced regularly? It sounds like you might have a gear selector problem but just guessing really as we don't know anything about your bike other than it seems to be having problems going into gear. Usually this happens when the gear selector wears but if it goes into the higher gears and not the lower gears then I'm leaning towards a worn selector, not the end of the world but if it is that then your looking at a gearbox rebuild..! Sometimes the selector will just break off at the joint and it's an easy fix. Look at the diagram and it's number 23 and 25 the gear selector fork. This is just a "best guess" with the info you have supplied might NOT be that at all..! This is NOT a diagram of your bikes selector just a generic one from Google!

  6. Sorry lads not going to make it this year, got a small problem with the bike..! Rear swing arm bearing has let go and the front fork seal has come out in sympathy (BUGGER..!) Plus eldest son is moving into a new house so muggings has been designated truck driver for the weekend. SWMBO said something like "oh you'll help them WON'T YOU ?" yes dear!

  7. Think it was me that sent it astray cos I did see he had a Yam but was pointing out whatever he had or anyone has they are welcome to pop in and ask questions. I personally like the fact that youngsters are still riding bikes and want to learn how to fix them. But really annoyed that whoever these robbing sod's are they need a lesson in customer relations.

  8. Yeah sorry my bad..! I did mean on here, he's more than welcome to turn up and we will all do our best to get him sorted. He's welcome in Stroud to if he wants to make the journey but I figure if it goes that far then there ain't much wrong with his bike anyway.

  9. AJ mate, as above really you can have fast acceleration and lower top speed or slow acceleration and slightly higher top speed BUT at best your gunna get about 5MPH more for a shit load of wasted time and money, if you want to go faster the only real way is a bigger bike, sorry mate some things just are..!

  10. Well said Fras, unfortunately these are not the only ones out there, but to rip off a poor kid and still not fix his bike is indeed shameful. And yes they do need their collective ARSE LIT..! If you know this kid then bring him over here, we like to help out if we can and even if he don't own a Yammie he's welcome just the same.

  11. Have to agree with Cynic here points were never easy to remove and setup they are and always will be right bastards..! That's why the Japanese went for CDI units as soon as they could cos then the bike starts first time every time. Get your self a new set of points and don't even bother fiddling with the old ones, get the manual for you bike as well, all the info for point setup are in there and easy to follow. Good on you for persevering in getting your Grandad's bike up and running, he will have  a grin on his face watching you shout at his old bike then riding it.

  12. Ok so does look like a really good project and admire your spirit BUT one thing I have to ask, does it run? cos the first thing you need to know is if the engines fucked then stop buying stuff for it till you have that sorted or it's just a money pit. NOT saying you shouldn't do it just get your priorities right, engine then electrics and then the fancy Renthal bars bits and bob's. Plus have you checked the tank for rust and crud? cos after 5 years standing your going to need to clean it out and check the carbs for gunk..! Good luck by the way just start from the right place.

Oh forgot, change the oil and filter BEFORE you turn it over..!

  13. Have to ask, how long have you actually been riding? This is something that happens to new riders they have problems with coordinating all the hand and foot movements when they first climb onto a bike, this sounds like your fairly new to riding and if that is the case then as time passes you will get it down pat. If your back wheel locks up when you change down your going to fast to actually change down..! Brakes and gears should work in sympathy with each other not fight against each other. I might of course have this all wrong and you have been riding for years in which case I would suggest a problem with the bike..!

  14. You really need the readings from the manual that tell you what it should be, then compare it to what you have, a difference in the amount usually means more wear in one barrel or rings or valves than the other but they all have minor differences, it just depends if your still in the correct range that the manual says you should be. Your difference could be for example from slightly more carbon in one valve seat than the other, might just need a clean, have you ever used an upper cylinder cleaner like RED X for example? These can help with most minor differences. Try using a higher grade fuel and a UCL for a couple of weeks and see if the differences just go away. Don't fret over it as it's more likely to be a minor cleaning than anything serious.

  15. Just a quick story of something that frightened the life out of me, I'm on my way home from visiting my Mum down in Portsmouth, and I'm just passing Swindon going down Blunsden hill, it's very steep and if you hit the top at 70+ your doing 90 at the bottom without moving the throttle, I love this hill..! Anyway I have just passed everything in front of me and pulled over to the left when this bike, it was green and black and that's all I know about it and bloody loud to, passes me on the outside, I'm doing 90 and he passed me at well over 140..! Nothing wrong with that I think and must admit had a bit of a grin on my face till I saw a kid about 10 years old on the back ..!!! W T F was this guy thinking? Perhaps I'm just getting old, well no perhaps about it really, but to my mind this was insane. Just having a moan really as I can't for the life of me think why anyone would do this.
