  1. Thanks people, I will try the 'bump' thing when I'm feeling brave enough, if no joy then I will gently take it apart and do it manually... Cheers Phatjap
  2. Hi all, Anyone had any dealings with a stuck clutch? The bike is a 1984 xz550, fully refurbed 15 years ago, not ridden since then. I've managed to free the engine and it runs a treat, but when I hopped on her and put her in gear she just bucked and stalled. So I guess the clucth plates have stuck. Never dealt with them and a little scared of taking the housing off tbh!! Anyone any suggestions on anything I can do with spending a fortune? Cheers Phatjap
  3. Hi again. Ok, trouble fitting the remote starter alarm to the bike. I fitted the alarm ok, but its the starter I' having trouble with. The leads from the alarm(blue wire) that is supposed to start the bike works, it supplies a 12 volt signal. The instructios say to connect it to the pos. side of relay. Which I tried. But there are two live and neither of them work. Incidently I thought there would be a wire that becomes live when you press the starter button, but they (there are 4) none of them seem to, except for the two that stay live. Can I connect the live starter wire from the alarm (blue) to the solenoid perhaps? It supplies a live for one second per press of the button. Any elp appreciated. Cheers phatjap
  4. Hi I just passed my motorcycle test 1 week ago, but I've had my driving lisence for about 15 years. When I read all the bumph you get when you pass, I noticed it said something like 'as a new rider, if you get more than 6 points......' blah blah and it went on to say how you would be banned or disqualified or fined or whatever it was. SO, I took it that if ANYONE took their test since a certain date (when the law concerning that particular issue), regardless of previous category entitlement you were still only allowed to collect 6 points for that category.? Thats how I read it anyway, though it wasnt specific. I hope its 12 though incase I'm naughty in the future. Phatjap
  5. Hi I'm about to fit an alarm to my bike. It says I need to locate the 'positive side of the starter relay'. There are 4 wires to/from the relay. Would it mean the side which 'becmes' live when ignition is turned on or the side which is always live? I presume there is one live going in and one out when the relay is activated? Can anyone help with this please.... Many thanks.
  6. hi there thanks for replying. Not sure if its the vision or if its got as trailing axle tbh? it lookspretty much like any other! As for the mudguard, yes its plastic....I'm going to do a search on google for the fork brace mentioned, see what I can come up with. I havent actually riden this bike yet, I just passed my test and Im about to ( within a few weeks) take it for its first mot in 15 yrs! once my GZ 125 is sold. cheers
  7. Hi again, more questions!! I've just about got my bike up and running, (XZ550, 1984) and I've hit another small problem. The original mudguard had a fork brace built into it, but as Ive replaced the mudguard without a brace in it, I'm wondering if I should put an aftet market set on, the type that clamp to the forks? I've just been told that its not really necesary by some one, but I'd like some opinions please.... If I need to, where could I get some? Cheers
  8. Hi I have solved this problem. It was metal that was too much, I actually had to grind 1 mm off the top of the pad and about 1 1.2 from thw sides.!! cheers
  9. Hi I've just purchased a 1984 yamaha XZ550.....in bits, I hasten to add. I've got a query regarding pads. My new pads came today but they are slightlyyyy bigger than the originals. They were quite hard to get in the calipers and they dont seem to slide along the shims or slider bolt too easily. You can push them back and forth along them if you use a screw driver or similar instrument, but not easily. I've put copper grease on the approapiate metal bits, but still seem a little stiff. I'm wondering how much resistance is acceptable. Should they be looser than this. or sloppy, or just a little resistance. As pattern parts they are squarer at the shim end, making them about 3/4 mm higher, therefore tighter on thr shims. I have asmall grinder to take off the difference.... Thanks in advance.
