  1. The battery, When you press the starter the starter motor will grab all of the electric, fuel injection gets starved and faults. Unlike a carb bike that will fire no matter the battery condition (in a lot of cases) as long as it turns over fast enough. Fuel injection is sensitive to it and it only needs to drop below maybe 12 v maybe a little less and it will not work. Mainly through self preservation, low volts increase current and electronics don't like it.

Give the battery a good desulphating charge or replace it. If im right it should bump start.

  2. Buyer beware, you can find bargains but remember one important thing.

Japanese culture drives them to take somebody else's product and make it better and more efficient so being less costly.

The chinese culture takes the same product and will make it as cheaply as possible. Material and labour wise.

I would think your safe with hoses but technical parts like the ever present 20quid dt175 carb i would not use as ballast.

  3. Would not trust trustpilot as far as i could spit, i used their site to try and put a 3 star rating for services from red driving school that were frankly, shite. Could not post it, it was blocked and i received an email to contact red driving school.

They wont post less than perfect.

  4. Throwing a slight curve on this, double check the wiring, i know, i know but bear with me, the early monoshock bikes use a 7 wire cdi which uses 2 source coils. One for low speed, one for high. The later bikes had a cleverer cdi and use 1 coil.

Its not uncommon for people to switch the ig parts about thinking everything swaps but it doesent work, well it does badly and if the red is broken or not connected but generally it wont rev out.

Something for you to look at, have had a dt175 since i was 16, yep bought for 2 quid in the pub (yes at 16!), still in my garage under a blanket and im past 50 something the dt can barely do lol into the wind. 🤣

When you do get it running properly you want to richen things up a touch, e5 and more so e10 run hotter than normal unleaded, (yamaha's are already happy with unleaded as japan never had leaded fuel). So you need to richen the mixture to prevent burning a hole in the piston when riding fast, (go on ask... still have the piston somewhere).

    Hope it helps.

Carry a spare plug and check if you're getting a spark, or whether it is a fuel evaporation issue.

Likely a bad engine temp sensor. There is usually 2 one for you and 1 for the fi. If the fi one is a bit flakey the bike might be trying to start 'on choke' when hot.

    Ybrs suffer similar problems.

I,m in! If you can let me know where and I can see if there is a nearby hotel/guest house, YES I,m old!! :) bike is ready and setup for 1st of April anyway (Taxed on the 1st of April) I need to get out after 2 years of covid.

Brixam is a nice spot, can be a bit full on tho, does'nt one of our regulars live down in the west country? Sorry can't remember his handle but he works in one of the small town harbours and has an FJ1200. Ah just had a flash of inspiration "DUTCH" anyone heard from him lately?

Hey slice, i just left the meet/camp point open, anywhere in north Devon would do. Its all on the A39. Mervin is in Bude i think so will give him a nudge and see what he feels. I am half tempted by a b+b myself, will see what shakes out. I know bude myself well but that may be further than people want to go on the Friday fully loaded?

  7. Open to offers but i think its worth doing, we are the same distance from Barnstaple and i think around there would be a good spot for camping or b+b.

Then go as far as we want, full on Lands end thing, no shortages for stuff to see, eat etc. Maybe find something off beat like that mill in Derbyshire. I still dont have the faintest idea where that is.

    Ball park plan then:

    Weekend 9/10th April

Meet around Barnstaple (exact spot tbc) Friday.

    Route tbc.

    People,

    Me

Still couldn’t get it to run. Compression seemed low and not pulling fuel. Stripped down top end and some nicks in piston ring, but no barrel scoring. Exhaust port had rough edge. That is now dressed and new piston, rings and gaskets on order. Hope this finally sorts it

You said all these parts were new or excellent condition earlier in the thread? Dont see a new piston and rings sorting it, have known 2 strokes can run with badly broken/damaged rings and piston. my tdr had a chunk missing from the crown and a destroyed top ring and ran quit acceptably, by no means top dog but it ran. The daughter's ped had both rings in several parts some of which in the exhaust and that ran too, badly.

That stator coil is a more likely villain. Its def got an electrical feel as mechanicals are normally an either or kind of issue.

Sorry to hear that Jim 😔

As slice says, you'll have to love vicariously through us for a bit!

April could work for me, I'll check the dates with work first though

I have 9 days to book by the end of june so sooner you can let me know the sooner i can check, we haul mainly car spares and building stuff which has taken a dive thanks to covid so i should be ok.

Cant help you, but remote start? Is there a point to that?

I used one on my old gsx600f, left the original ig in place but it wasn't connected to anything and i turned the ig on on the bike with a keyfob, same as the blipper on modern car keys. I did have a manual overide hidden under the seat. I used a spare in the fuse box and if i needed to start the bike i could put the fuse in which bypassed the system leaving the ig permanently on. Was neat but needed an optimate or the electronics (20yrs ago) would do for the battery. Never bothered with the remote start thing though. I could have connected the starter circuit to it but visions of the bike driving its self off the stand put paid to that.

  11. Would avoid ebay myself, haygon, nitron or maybe maxton, quality is subjective on anything else. Have spoken to people running these 3 and no complaints, hagon is the lower rent end and maxton will make you weep just looking at them. Prices are not that different.

Ok as the bloody covid is at last coming to a conclusion we should start thinking about a meet, where and when? Can be nice and warm in April if you want to go early in the year or wait till June- July if that makes it easier for everyone! Down in the west country is usually warmer than anywhere in the UK, Devon or Cornwall would be great I suppose and the roads are tiny and Exmoor can be interesting or out to Lands end if you fancy a windy morning. Lots of camp sites and small pubs and even a hotel or two :) . Just sayin!

May is pretty much out for me.

    July could be good?

Well i have holiday to use and a bike that needs using, what about an early bird in April. From me bude is 268 miles, (done it once or twice) by motorway/dc and avoiding that would add a chunk on so 300 as a guess. Lands end would be another 70 or so. If that's picked as a specific end point so its a good trip.

If doing the Atlantic highway is the aim maybe camp somewhere like Barnstaple so we can all hook up, then go for the lizzard or Lands End, whatever, hell do both. Back to Barnstaple for the evening then home. That would prob give most of us around 200 miles a day which with plenty of fag/coffee and subsequent pee🥵 stops is plenty doable.

    Opinions?

  13. Well, the lil cbr has the most pathetic wheel/tyre combo at 80/17 100/17 i mean come on there are pushbikes with wider, thats fact too not just internet bull.

Anyway, looking at her boyfriends bike, then looking again with a tape measure, what do you know the spacings work to switch the wheels. So she may well get some yzf wheels in her cbr, get em powder coated repsol orange. 😈 Can feel the hate 😱

  14. Fixed it, was a busted cam bearing, whole new part according to Honda. As in cam, cam drive and bearings, 140 quid plus postage sir.

Bollocks to that, 14 quids worth of skf bearings and half hour with a puller and another with a 60t press and it went back together.

  15. I agree with slice, have always wanted to ride the Atlantic highway myself, all the way down. The roads from Barnstaple down are ace. Mervin is somewhere near Bude (on the Atlantic highway) im sure he could find some cheeky camping spots for us.

As for time, after the last year or two i could happily do 2 or 3 runs this year.
