hey , i'm new here and i'm trying to get my 81 dt175 going 100% , but i'm having some issues . you can give it as much gas as you want and it does fine untill you hit 6k , then it just flutters there , does it in neutral or under load . i checked the float height and it was off so i set it to factory spec . the slide needle isn't adjustable , the autolube pump seems to be adjusted right (peg lines up with the dot) , all jets clean . once i'd done all that i could get it to go to 6.5k rpm and sometimes a little higher but it would start gurgling . then i thought hey , maybe the air cleaner isn't as clean as it looked , so i took it out and found the back side of it sopping…

Hi all, my DT engine is a bit sick. She has finally called time and demanded some serious attention. She had an overhaul of the running gear about 10 years ago but the motor was ok and as one of the ain't broke brigade, i left well alone.... Point is i've established that the crank seals have gone so am pulling the motor down, i've started from the off taking pictures so i am going to try and do it as a long thread and try and scare away some of the fantasies over whats inside these motors and that its relatively simple to tackle the big jobs. Anyho this is the most recent piccy of the old girl just b4 i set to getting the motor out.. The first thin…

Hi All Last week my TW125 started to misfire and i can't find out why,i have changed the plug, cleaned all the wiring and sprayed all the connections with WD40 to make sure there are no wet connections,I have checked the HT lead and it looks fine. Is there anything else i should check before i strip down and clean the carb . it feels like the bike is not pulling up to top speed with the throttle open and splutters a lot. HELP

As in the title really, just bought a restored 1979 DT 175 off ebay for £400, it runs ok once warm, pulling quite smooth from 2-6000 rpm, but then it hits a brick wall and wont go any further, any ideas? Any pointers much appreciated Cheers Ed

Finally got down to the nitty gritty today and decided it was time to pull out my Yamaha and restore it to its former glory; but there is always a hiccup! It has been sitting since late 2006 and to my surprise wasn't in too bad a condition. Though It still wouldn't start. I tried all off the following; - Cleaned the spark arrester. - Cleaned & Lubed the Air filter. - Stripped and Cleaned the Carb. - Cleaned & Lubed the Chain. - Replaced the oil with Yamalube Full Synthetic. - Replaced the Fuel tank with Unleaded. - Charged and checked the charge of the battery which is ok. The electric start is working it turns over the engine, fuel sits in the…

Before I had my 2007 dt125x, I had a 2000 dt125r and I remember that it used to love to rev and that it redlined at 10.5k and went to 12k. I have recently fitted a tachometer to my dt125x as it doesn't come with one and I noticed that when I'm riding, it doesn't want to rev past 8000rpm. I know the tacho is accurate because it reads 1.5k when idling. When I reach 8000rpm, the bike is screaming. It was derestricted behind the speedo when I got it but I earthed the green/black cable to a different place on the frame to make sure, it made no difference. I'm assuming that the x and re models redline at 10.5 as well. Also, the bike runs fine, it pulls pretty well up to 50mph b…

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help with the problem of which CDI I need for my bike. Unfortunately the bike is a non runner and came without one, and as I gather there are more than one type, I thought I had better check before I splash out. My engine is 1979 but the magneto has only 5 wires coming from it, and only one source coil (contrary to what the parts book says I should have) which makes wonder if I have a magneto from a different year, I don't know if this will be a problem or whether I just need to match the CDI to it. Does anyone know anything about this. Any help is appreciated. Regards,

I just picked up a 1974 DT360 today for $150! It's mostly unmolested, but the engine is completely seized. The original spedo is hooked up and it says 5,247 miles are on the bike. The transmission oil looks like new, and it shifts nicely. But in 1st gear when I push the bike forwards or back it will not budge the engine, and the kick starter feels solidly locked up when you try to push down on it. The guy said it ran before it was parked on the side of someone's house in the California high desert a long time ago, but after years and years of sitting in the weather, the engine will not turn over. I sprayed PB Blaster in the spark plug hole in the hopes that it might free …

Hi all, Names Clive form Uk down in Somerset.Age 45 Been riding since i was 17, current bikes are Ducati 748s and XJR1200 and the DT175mx. Hopefully getting a TS250 or DT360 in a few weeks. Purchased the DT175 a few days ago but its performance is poo. Flat out in 6 you struggle to achieve 50 mph. Ive ajusted the carb and its a bit better but not what i remember the Dt175 to be like. It has a big one exaust so not sure if the jets are standard but will check. and will probably put original exaust on. Its very tidy but i will strp it and restore as i can get work done for next to nowt but i dont know that much about engines and carbs, only the basics. I…

I was having a problem with the xt it was stumbling hard to start and I had to run with the choke on. I changed the intake boots and it seemed to run fine with just a little stumbling when the throttle was in the neutral area, not on not off. The bike has sat for about 2 months. I took it out yesterday and she fired right up. Even with the choke on she really didn't want to take fuel. Once that got worked through she wouldn't run without the choke on full. Also the horn won't work. The throttle responce is jerkey and if I take the choke off she will stall. I havnt delved into it as of yet but I am thinking low battery, maybe a mouse nest in the air cleaner or the …

have an 02 dt125r, nothing wrong with it accept the front fork oil is probably still the same stuff from new so thought i would have front and back suspension serviced, is it possible that i could have seen on this or another website that its quite common to put 10 weight oil in the front forks and have an airgap off 100m/m so as to stiffen the front slightly, not bothered about going offroad as its just something to potter around on during the summer. Also can the rear shock be serviced or is it a waste of time ?

Hi folks, I need a bit of help understanding carb set up . Barrel porting standard, k & n filter in airbox, 35/1 pre mix so using 135 (instead of 130 ) main jet. Bike ran quite well from tick over, ( but surged on over run) . Once fully warmed the engine started pinking so I've raised the needle a notch, pinking gone, less surging, bike pulls better apart from virtually closed to 1/8 ish throttle ! So I've opened air screw to three full turns and it's a lot better but not perfect. Question is do I need a smaller pilot jet ? Hi everyone, it's great to be back, Dave.

I have a 2 stroke oil leak coming from what looks like the reed block gasket (you can see a drop of oil on the bottom of the cylinder and one on the clutch arm). Does anybody know what's going on here? Do I simply need to replace the reed gasket or could there be a problem with the oil pump? Thanks,

First get this out of the way - I Love This Bike. It is my 27th bike, but the first Yamaha I have owned. Buying it wasn't a logical decision. I had a year old CB1300 that was irritating me with a succession of little faults and basically got so peeved I wanted to get rid of it. I got the XT as a straight swap. I'd always wanted a trail type bike (some vague hard man fantasy, I suppose) and said to myself "What the hell!". Observations: 1- Its condition on delivery was distinctly average. Marked plastics, chip on the rear wheel rim. I have complained and hope, at least, to get a new back wheel. Bikers are still 2nd class citizens, go to a showroom and see if you can f…
