Greetings Dan The R1 is far too powerful for umm...a 19 year old so stick with the R6,
  3. Good advice Tony, some nuts can be torqued but the DTR gives too little clearance for sockets on some cyl head nuts, so a little guesswork with a ring spanner has to be applied. DTRs are renowned for blowing gaskets and so I will say again a thin line of silicone around the bore circumference (just 7mm wide) is of benefit and it cleans off quite easily,

I cant understand how it was dry unless the oil level was extremely low?
  5. Greetings matt Hairspray...well I suppose it's appropriate for a aerox hairdryer

  7. Either the air filter is dirty...or you are using the choke?
  8. Even a cheap one may work with the film of silicone as I said...I fitted it dry
  9. I have used a cheap one once and sure enough it failed. I use proper ones now and run a thin film of silicone manifold sealant around where the bore is only about 7mm wide not the whole gasket (you have to get it off again sometime) do this both top and bottom. Your head may be warped though I cant comment on that but skimming should be done proffessionally in my opinion. At a guess place the head on a piece of glass and ensure it doesn't rock in any way.
  10. are you using a cheap after market all metal gasket or a pukka yamaha rubber coated one?

Not sure on the switch issue but there are two versions of CDI, one is 6 wire and one is 7 wire, the presence or absence of a RED is the difference, early bikes had two source coils in the magneto...the RED connects to source coil 2 on these.

  25. The other two wires Blue and Black are for the meter light so leave them be, you are only concerned with Blu/Red and Blk/whi If they are shorted disconnect them, if they are not shorted then short them. I advise that whatever you do try to do it in such a way as to not damage the wiring, like short them in the plug for exaple rather than chopping your loom.
