Hi cornell" the soarse coil is the one for spark, this is a wire wound object screwed to the stator plate, thers another at oppisite side,[ lighting coil] , the brushes you broke , were they on the starter motor, ? this system will start without a battery, is yours the DT125E,, , it might be a 12 volt system , parts are harder to find,
