  1. Only ever used to put Shell Optimax in my classic Mini - and that made a difference. The other cars I've owned (inc. my current one) just have regular petrol chucked in them. I haven't really noticed a difference when using premium for a few tankfuls, so I don't bother parting with the extra dosh. With my bike, up until 500 miles or so ago, I was just filling it up with regular. I started using premium out of interest and it has made a slight difference. My 125 now holds itself better up hill (one particular near me I'd have to drop into 3rd, but I can now stay in 5th, woo!) Can't really comment on top speed, as there's only so much poke the beast has, ha ha! Also it hasn't made any difference to smoothness, but it is a modern bike anyway. For now, as Grouch says, it doesn't cost much extra, so I'm continuing to use it seeing as it pulls me up hills better!
  2. Hey and welcome! I second what Sacha says - start up a project thread!
  3. Hey Cowdie - welcome to the forum! Cool looking bikes those Dragstars, enjoy yourself!
  4. Hey Euan, glad you've been bitten by the biking bug, it's great! I know it's not a cruiser, or a Yammy, but the Honda Varadero 125 is a big learner bike. We can't have you chopping your legs down a bit...
  5. Glad the MOT was fine and your back out there - cool looking bikes. I know someone with one of those in black, which is just boring compared to the urban colour scheme.
  6. Hey Paul - welcome! Good intro. The exhaust downpipe quality sucks on the 125 version too. After washing mine I coat it in ACF50 as I tend not to touch the bike for a day or two afterwards. I think that's helping, but my bike is still quite new.

    Almost finished

Good one Jimmy. Looks like there is a street light near your shed too, that'll help act as a further deterrent.
  8. Bugger! Nothing like that to ruin a nice ride out eh? Glad there were no dramas.

    rear wheel

Yeah it's normal. Mine does it too when up on the centre stand. I think it's something to do with the oil viscosity making things turn. I believe that as the engine warms and the oil gets thinner this happens less. Well that's my incredibly non-technical explanation! Sure someone else on here will correct me / explain better. Ha ha!

    Mod 1

Congratulations! That's wonderful news, well done you! Hope mod 2 goes smoothly for you, keep us posted! With the new rules does this mean you'll have to take another test when you're old enough for the full license?
  11. No worries matey. Let us know what solution you eventually come up with!
  12. I've just found the video - Hope it helps you out a little.
  13. Saw some video on you tube once where someone with a Ninja (I think) had managed to install a Givi hard case into a spare rear seat, so when he wanted lockable storage he just swapped seats and was ready to go. Not sure if something like that is possible on your bike.
  14. Welcome! Plenty of DT owners on here who can help - just pop your questions in the workshop area.

    Hi

Welcome Helen! You'll enjoy the YBR - very wise of you to take it easy until you feel comfortable. You'll be heading everywhere soon enough!
  16. Found this old post on the forum which may help you out a little: And then this from the Fuelly website which gives some stats from various users: http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/yamaha/xj6n - absolutely no idea how accurate this is.
  17. If you still have the receipt from when you filled up (after the fuel light came on), it'll indicate how many litres you put in it. Compare that against the fuel capacity of your XJ and it'll give you an indication of how eager (or not so) the fuel light is to come on. I'm sure you already do, but resetting the trip meter after filling up will help gauge. I don't have a low fuel light, but do have a fuel gauge and went into panic stations the first time it got in the red - but my mind was put at ease after looking in the tank. Where possible though I don't let it get more than 3/4 empty before filling - then I never have to worry!
  18. Hey Graham - welcome! I was over at Clay Cross Kawasaki a couple of weeks back (a sin for someone on a Yammy forum I know!) Great ride from there to Glossop. As Sacha says, share pics of your pride and joy.
  19. I'm really not an expert in this area, but from my own experience when i jumped on a bike for the first time: - it could happen if you're releasing the clutch really fast - jumping on the throttle hard when you're still releasing the clutch I hate shoddy gear changes in cars, so once I picked up my bike I spent some time really practising and getting to know the bike so my changes were smooth. If you think it's down to technique, I'd suggest some conscious practising - experimenting with how far you pull in the clutch and when you get back on the throttle etc. sure you'll soon find a happy medium for you and your bike.

    MOD1 bummer1

Sorry to hear that, but stick at it! All this makes me wish I did it 10 years ago...
  21. Hey Aled, welcome and well done for getting your CBT done! Love your DT, I'm jealous! Hopefully others on the forum can help you out, just post any technical queries in the relevant topic area.
