Police cause an accident
It was filmed in the IOM, It wasn't so much a safety video, the guy riding one of the bikes was a journo. They had it all set up and everyone involved was fully briefed where and when the cop would be standing. The guy on the second bike admitted that he forgot the brief, then 'forgot' where his brakes were, so hardly the cop causing an accident Edit// Heres the full video,

Car head lights on back roads
I've a 50 mile trip each way to work and whilst the majority about 35 miles are on well lit road the other 15 is on unlit B roads. Ive been travelling the road for 25 years so I would say I know it pretty well, unfortunately so does just about everyone else. I had noticed the blinding effect over the last 2 or 3 winters and partly put it down to me becoming an auld cnut, 50 this year, and partly badly adjusted lamps and/or lamps being too bright. I do what cynic suggests and look off towards the edge of the road, still twitchy bum syndrome sometimes tho'

Mini Project XS 400 DOHC
Good link drewps, I looked into it with the SR but that type was moulded in resin. Quids in if the 400s' is free to work on. Even if you dont know anyone, you can take it to the local tech college and I'm sure they would have a look at it.

Mini Project XS 400 DOHC
I knew it would be expensive, but didn't think that much. Have you opened the duff one up. If it is not the kind that is encapsulated in resin then speedshop ( or indeed any electronic wizard if you know any) may be able to renew/rebuild it

Mini Project XS 400 DOHC
Tommy As I keep boring everyone with over on elvis' thread. My boys old SR went through 3 cdi units. The problem being was that I was buying them from breakers yards so was replacing a 20 odd year old part with another of the same age. If you could pick up a new one, expensive I know, that will last you another 20 odd years, and as you have 2 xs' then you can chop and change between them

Spirit crushed: took the car
Well I'm embarrassed to say I haven't been out on my bike since about November. In fairness to me we have only had about one or two dry days since then, and the winds only settled down this week, so maybes soon

Chain break, now engine won't start
Now just remember that a little maintenance goes a long way to happy biking

Virago shox
My boys 535 is showing signs of wear, in that the replacement shox the PO fitted must have been cheap shit and there is no chrome left on the rear shock springs. The yellowish (zinc?) coating is coming through and when left for a few days they develop a coating of surface rust. So can I strip them down and get them re-chromed or would plastic coating be better. Anyone know if powder coating would do the job or would that just come off

Chain break, now engine won't start
As far as I am aware, the only way to check is by replacement. Anyone near you have an sr or If there are any breakers yards near you, they may allow you to try before you buy, but that'll depend on hope good a mood they're in If you're having to buy one, remember there was a changeover around 2002 I think and the wiring connections changed so you'll need to make sure its the correct one

Got the second RD400
Me neither mate, unless I can count the £20 fizzy I had for about a month when I was 15, but reading through this and other stroker threads has given me a hankering for change

Insuring someone elses bike?
I agree with Ttasky about transferring ownership. My experience, and Lee of this parish can agree or not, 2 years ago was buying a bike for my son and when I tried to insure it for him it was too expensive, so I then tried to insure it in my name, and they all asked if I was the registered keeper. When I said no (cos I had sent the v5 off in my boys name), no-one would take it any further. I got round the problem by changing the v5 to my name and buying him the virago. Car related, but I am the registered keeper of a vw beetle, but my wife is the main driver she is the registered keeper of a honda civic, but I am the main driver

bearing replacement
You have most likely checked all this but, assuming you have removed the cone (and maybe a dust seal?) from the bottom yoke, you should have 2 cups and 2 cones. Next is to ensure you have seated the 2 new headraces correctly.

Chain break, now engine won't start
Cynic I agree any damage to the engine is unlikely and that they are hard to kill, but I would say from experience that the cdi units can and do fail, and the symptoms andrew describes, with the weak yellow spark, mimics one of my boys units' when it went tits up. Hopefully it is only a plug chop and this issue is a coincidence and bugger all to do with the chain wrapping itself around the front sprocket

Chain break, now engine won't start
Remove the casing, use a puller and the woodruff key will be sitting in a slot on the crank (if its still there). I asked if the burst chain had stalled the engine, which if it was wrapped round the engine sprocket, it would have done then there may be some damage to the valves of may have knocked the ignition timing out. If as you say it was becoming a crap starter with a poor spark could indicate an ignition cdi fault. They usually just fail, but my sons old sr125 went through 3 cdis during his ownership (problem being buying from a breakers meant replacing a 20yr old part with another 20yr old part)and one of those displayed a weak yellow spark. Unfortunately the only testing method is by replacement

Chain break, now engine won't start
Andrew When the chain snapped did it lock on the rear wheel, roll off the bike or did it jam on the gearbox sprocket.

Frame paint ??
I go with powder coating when I'm doing my auld bikes. It works out about £75 for a large bike frame
